Dushane Hill is the main protagonist of the Top Boy series.

Dushane is an ambitious and ruthless drug lord in London's Summerhouse neighbourhood. He runs a drug empire and seeks to expand his power and influence, facing rivalries and problems that come with his role. His cunning and determination make him a central figure in the series, and he also has connections in international crime.

He is played by Ashley Walters.

Biography[]

Dushane was born on the 12th of September, 1984 as the son of Pat Hill and a man called Wendell. According to Dushane, Wendell was largely absent in his life. Dushane had an older brother named Chris and multiple younger half-siblings through his father, including Jason. Dushane had family in Kingston, Jamaica, including Pat's sister Bernadette and her son Donovan. This implies Dushane's mother immigrated from Jamaica.

Dushane was raised in the Summerhouse Estate of Hackney, London, and attended school with Gerard "Sully" Sullivan. The two became good friends at a young age, and Sully would regularly come over to Dushane's flat to eat Pat's cooking. Sometime before March of 2011, Dushane and Sully founded the Summerhouse gang together, and made their close friend, 19-year-old Dris Wright, their second-in-command. The gang worked with drug distributors Lee Greene and Bobby Raikes, and would heavily rival the London Fields gang.

At some point between 2012 and 2019, Dushane moved to Kingston, Jamaica. Dushane worked at his uncle's car rental shop alongside his cousin Donovan, before returning to London in September of 2019.

Season 1[]

Kamale Lewis and members of his London Fields gang arrive to the Summerhouse estate and rob Chantelle and Tareek of their drugs. Dushane, Sully, and Dris are rung at the market by Chantelle, but do not arrive in time to stop them. This puts Dushane at odds with Lee Greene, the main distributor for the Summerhouse gang; and Bobby Raikes, another powerful distributor whom Greene works for. Greene tells Dushane and Sully the two must recuperate £3,000 for Raikes as a result of the lost drugs. Dushane plans to usurp power from Greene, but needs to pay Raikes the money he is owed first.

Dushane and Sully meet up with Femi, but he is unable to loan them money. Kamale's crew is tipped off about a stash house belonging to Summerhouse and rob the crew again. A new recruit named Gem is accused by Sully of being the mole. With the debt now at £40,000 and out of alternatives, the two plan to kidnap Kamale's cousin Shaun for ransom. The plan goes awry when Sully inadvertently kills him.

Dushane then sends a young dealer named Michael to scout London Fields with instructions to ring if he spots Kamale. He does, and Dushane, Sully, and Dris kidnap Kamale from his girlfriend's house. Kamale is interrogated about the drugs' whereabouts then executed. At the location Kamale gave, Dushane and Sully find Greene there. The two realize Greene has been the mole the entire time and shoot him on the spot.

Raikes is upset Dushane took care of Greene without warning. Dushane plans to buy weed from a youth named Ra'Nell, and disapproves of Sully and Dris' idea of robbing him. Sully and Dris confront Ra'Nell anyway, and Sully accidentally shoots Ra'Nell's friend Leon when he intervenes. Raikes asks Dushane to kill Sully, viewing him as a liability, but Dushane kills Raikes instead and stages his death to look like a suicide. With Greene and Raikes dead, Sully becomes the leader of Summerhouse and becomes the sole distributor for Raikes' drug supplier Joe.

Season 2[]

One year later, construction workers find the body of Kamale. Dushane, Sully and Dris are arrested but released on bail with the help of their solicitor Rhianna Parkes. Dushane and Joe still work together until an Albanian gang led by Dardan steals the shipment and Joe is fatally shot. Dushane cannot act until the police stop investigating him for Kamale's death.

Michael is arrested for stealing a pair of trainers and threatened with his mother's imprisonment, admits that Dushane, Sully, and Dris confronted Kamale the day of his murder. Dushane forces Rhianna Parkes to intimidate Kamale's girlfriend Kayla into not cooperating with the police.

The three beat the charges and (alongside Shaheed) attack the Albanians to retrieve the stolen drugs. The Albanians hit Dushane's flat in retaliation and murder Collins who was watching over the place with Michael. Michael runs to the balcony to warn Dushane, but falls to his death when Dardan throws him. The Albanians begin firing from the balcony but Dushane manages to escape.

Season 3[]

7 years later, Dushane is living in Jamaica and working with his cousin who is a crippled called Donovan in a car radio place. Dushane and Donovan are at a party, a random Jamaican recognises Dushane from Summerhouse, he takes a selfie with him and tells his girlfriend about him. His days being a powerful drug kingpin was behind him and he moved on. Looking to make some extra cash, he meets up with a fellow Jamaican man named Lester, they go out on a robbery what doesn't go well, Lester kills a man and then tries to kill an old woman but Dushane comes to the rescue and kills Lester. Dushane runs back to Donovan and tells him that he killed Lester and he is going back to London. Him and Donovan are running back but get caught by the police along with Haze. Haze arranges for Dushane to see Sugar an imprisoned drug lord in Jamaica. Dushane is in prison for a while he visits Sugar and tells him he can make him serious money and gets deported back to London. Sugar made it clear to Dushane that he is not to be messed with and makes sure he brings in the right money or his cousin Donovan will die.

Dushane makes his return to London to get back on top to run Summerhouse, he goes in to see Dris, a long time friend who was running Summerhouse while Dushane was away in Jamaica, who takes Dushane in to sleep round his flat as long as he wants, meanwhile Dushane noticed he had a dodgy arm but Dris had a stroke the year before, Dushane was very shocked about it, Dris takes Dushane around Summerhouse. Summerhouse had been different, Dris introduced Jaq, Kieron and Romy to Dushane telling them about running Summerhouse however neither of them never heard of Dushane. Summerhouse was downhill. Dushane does anything to get money anyway he could. He noticed his old partner Sully was out of prison so he followed him and Jason into their local hangout, he tried to get Sully to partner up with him like the old days but whilst in prison, so Sully declines the offer and doesn't really want to take part in anything again with Dushane. Sully tells Dushane he hasn't got any money and tells him he can't pay with the money he cut him in after getting the drugs and money back what they took from the Albanians as he tells him he got arrested and the police took his money. Jaq and her sister give information on a house that has over 10 grand, so Dushane and Dris come over, Dris waits in the car while Dushane comes in and breaks in. However the burglary doesn't go well so he runs back in the car, Dris had a random seizure and crashed asleep. Dushane also went to his brother Chris to ask for 10 grand but Chris is still upset over the time when Lee Greene came in and ironed on his chest. Chris makes it clear to Dushane that he will not help him out and tells him to stay away from him and never come near him again. Dushane also pays his mother a visit, she is very sick, Shelley is looking after Dushane's mum, Dushane attempts to rob his mother which also don't go well, Shelley sees him trying to do it, she tells him about how she saw him, Shelley and Dushane become very close, she wasn't afraid to tell him what she thought and she keeps faith in him.

Dushane and Dris wake up in the morning to meet up with Haze but unexpectedly Sully shows up putting a gun to Dushane and Dris and tells Dushane that he wants back in partnership with Dushane, so Dris is held back and Sully comes with Dushane to do the pick up. Dushane asks how Jason is doing but then is shocked when he hears Jason died, now with the money in hand, real business could begin. Haze makes it clear to Dushane that Sugar is gonna make serious money, Dushane is happy and Summerhouse are back on top again. Dushane started to have a relationship with Shelley and he meets her daughter.

While being back on top, during his absence, a rival gang from the fields known as ZT's led by a young leader Jamie Tovell, however Dushane meets up with him to negotiate with him to work for him but Jamie refuses and wants him to work for him instead. Jamie reminds Dushane about what happened to the Turkish gang leaders, also Dris and Jaq kidnapped his supplier Lizzie but they bring her back, this causes a war between Summerhouse and ZT as it cause to wound 2 Summerhouse dealers. Dushane demotes and holds him back Dris as he has become a liability. So he sent Jaq to recruit more dealers on the street but in that result, the youngers are scared to work the streets. Jaq and Dris recruit some enforcement to help out Dushane and Sully.

With the pressure of being in war with the young ruthless leader Jamie, it makes it difficult for Sugar to get his money, Dushane video calls Donovan and tells him to hide and keep his head down. Sugar however tracks down Donovan, his henchmen calls Dushane and has Donovan in hostage. He kills Donovan which angers and upset about his death. Haze warns him if he messes up again he will kill his mother and brother as well as Shelley and her daughter Tish.

Dushane was determined to solve his problems once and for all. He and Sully kidnapped Jamie's supplier and went into hiding. Lizzie is very scared and she also tells Dushane about her affair with Jamie in that result of Dushane and the other crew laughing, Dushane tells Lizzie to have Jamie killed and to supply to him instead instead. Lizzie agrees on it and tells him she will supply him with all the drugs him and his crew need.

With links to a new supplier, Dushane arranges to get Sugar killed and he also traps Haze and shoots him the back of his head. Dris later betrays Dushane and Sully, he tips off where Dushane and Sully's location is to Sully's estranged cousin Jermaine Newton, Jamie & Modie who escaped prison which causes an ambush and kills 2 others Summerhouse crew members. Dushane and Sully escape the ambush.

Dushane tried one last plan to take out Jamie, Dushane gets Jaq to get Ats, a new drug dealer for the Summerhouse crew who happens to be best friends with Stefan (Jamie's brother), he sets up Jamie's brothers by putting a light green bag containing a gun and some drugs in Jamie's other brother, Aaron's closet with one of his uni books inside. After it is done Dushane makes an ominous tip to the police, this got Jamie's brothers arrested and forced Jamie to take the fall for them. Beforehand, Dris tips off to Jamie to the location of the cafe that Dushane and Sully are inside of. Jamie and his crew show up at the place but it is a trick to find out if Dris is the snitch and Dushane and Sully have already left to wait outside and see if Jamie comes.

Immediately after finding out, Sully travels to Dris' flat and takes him to a rooftop of a separate building to kill him instead of where his daughter can find him. Dushane visits Shelley. Dushane and Sully meet up again, Sully is upset about killing Dris but also said to Dushane "Just because we didn't lose doesn't mean we won" and for how long?

Dushane is back on top, he visits Jamie in prison, he offers Jamie an opportunity to work for him when he gets out, he shows him a video of Ats with the bag, he makes a proposition for Jamie to tell the police about Ats and he gets out and works for Dushane.

Season 4[]

Dushane is 6 months back as the "top boy", Dushane has Jamie as one of his right hand men and working for him. When the death of Ats is found out, Dushane has Jamie to kill Kit in the revenge of Ats after Kit sending Dexter to kill him.

With the ZTs dealt with, he buys a place for him, Shelley and Tish to live together. Dushane plans on getting out of the drugs game and going fully legit. But as Dushane is planning his way out the drugs game, Lizzie calls Dushane as they have a problem with their new supplier. Dushane flies to Spain and meets Lizzie and Emilio to find out what the issue is. Dushane is reccommended to go to Morocco to meet Mounir and Chaash. They promise Dushane they will get him the supplies. But when the shipments in, a rival gang who are corrupt police force led by Juan el Bueno intercepts the shipment in Spain. Dushane sends Jamie over to find out what the problem is.

Dushane's efforts to go legit see him join the Summerhouse redevelopment consortium with Jeffrey, this puts his relationship in strain with his mother who is opposing it. the stress of this fight takes toll on his mum who then passes away to her illnesses. Dushane changes his mind after his mother dies as Dushane talks Jeffrey out of the redevelopment project at Summerhouse.

With his problem sorted against Ruben who was willing to give up Dushane after he manipulated him, and the Scouse gang taken care of, Dushane plans to get closer to his dream of retiring from the road and living an honest life, until Sully kills Jamie.

Season 5[]

Sully tells Dushane that he is taking over as the leader of Summerhouse and tells Dushane to step back and appoints Junior as his right hand man instead.

Dushane wants to cash out so he can help Shelley with her new business expansion. Dushane goes to visit Lithe to go ahead with it. Few days later Dushane realises Lithe and Lizzie ran off back to Ireland with his money. Dushane makes a visit to Wilson Lee to track down Lizzie and Lithe. Dushane visits Jeffrey about Lithe and Lizzie and says he can't track them down. Dushane then callously murders Jeffrey.

Dushane tells Shelley he can't support Shelley in her new business expansion. Shelley initially leaves Dushane and ends their relationship. Dushane and Sully meet up to assassinate Jonny and Tadgh and take their hidden stash of drugs and call it quits.

With the police investigating Jeffrey's death, Dushane is advised by Wilson Lee to leave the country. Dushane has been recommended Isaac as he can help Dushane flee the country. When Isaac visits Dushane he stalls Isaac to plan on stealing Sully's drugs off Jaq. Dushane beats up Jaq by taking the drugs and running from Sully. Dushane texts "yes" to Isaac to tell him that he can sell it to him but Sully catches up to Dushane and shoots him before he can escape. Dushane and Sully have one final conversation in an alley a gate separating the two of them. Dushane then dies from the gunshot wound behind the gate, dying a poor man left in the gutter of the crumbling Summerhouse estate which he tried so hard to get out of since he was a child.

Personality[]

Dushane is a cold, calculative, charismatic, egotistical and ruthless leader who does whatever it takes to insure that he stays on Top. This drive to be the best gets in the way of his partnership with his childhood best friend Sully who has an inferiority complex and constantly wants to be seen as an equal to Dushane.

However, he only sees Sully as the driving muscle for the Summerhouse gang while he is the business man that makes all the calculated decisions. Dushane’s longing for power and money leads him to become self-centred and egotistical putting himself before the others in his life. Dushane’s ego eventually blinds him, he says that he doesn’t need his supplier Lizzie during an argument, believing that he is more powerful than her. However, he forgets that her and her partner Blithe have full access to his bank account and one day flee the country with all of his money.

After realising this, Dushane lashes out and kills Lizzie’s husband Jeffrey, despite him being a victim too, having his money stolen due to him and Lizzie’s failing marriage, he beats him to death in a bloody and gruesome manner in the middle of Jeffrey’s kitchen leaving his finger prints all over the crime scene. This impulsive acts leads to the police being hot on his tail. Now desperate, Dushane plans to flee the United Kingdom and go on the run but needs the right amount of money to succeed in this plan. We see Dushane’s true colours as the greedy and cynical man he is. The pressure of potentially losing everything he has causes his to develop frequent panic attacks. Once his girlfriend Shelley sees this version of him, she ends their relationship. Leaving him all alone to deal with his problems. Dushane now completely out of options decides to rob two bags of drugs, worth at least a million, off of Sully believing that Sully would’ve never given him any money in the first place knowing how rocky and untrustworthy their partnership can be. This petty and desperate act eventually leads to his downfall at the hands of Sully.

For so long, Dushane had tried to put on the facade of being a charming, intelligent and caring businessman willing to do whatever it takes for the people he cares about. But once his money is taken from him, his facade falls off revealing the violent, abusive, greedy and almost psychopathic drug dealer he truly is.

Dushane’s longing for riches and power came from the fact that he grew up in the Summerhouse estate, an area stricken with poverty and crime. This way of survival is what led him to develop this mindset of needing to be the most ruthless and powerful in the drug trade.
