“ | It's all gonna be okay. Ain't nothin' gonna happen that you got to worry about, Sammy. | „ |
~ Doc Benton to Sam Winchester. |
Doc Benton was the main antagonist of the Supernatural episode "Time is On My Side". In 1816, Benton, an ordinary doctor, found the secret to becoming immortal. He became a serial killer and took people's organs to continually replace his own, as they kept "wearing out". Thus, he effectively became immortal. He was portrayed by the the late Billy Drago, who also notably portrayed Barbas on the TV show Charmed.
History[]
Years ago, John Winchester, father of Sam and Dean Winchester, encountered Benton and seemingly killed him when he cut his heart out using a chainsaw. However, he just got a new heart and continued killing.
When Sam and Dean learn of the killings matching his M.O, they begin investigating the case (Sam doing so also because he is looking for a way to save Dean from his incoming deal as part of a deal he made with a demon to bring Sam back from the dead.) Though Benton managed to kidnap Sam, Dean rescues him and knocks Benton out. Benton tries to convince Dean he can help him become immortal and never go to Hell. Dean thinks it over and denies his offer, not wanting to become something that isn't human. Doc Benton is last seen being buried alive by the Winchester brothers.
Personality and Traits[]
“ | You think I'm some kind of monster, don't you? Well... I gotta tell you, I have never done one thing that I did not have to do. This whole eternal-life thing is... very high-maintenance. If something goes bad, like my eyes here...you got to replace them. And sometimes things get damaged, like when your father cut out my heart. Now, that...That was very inconvenient. So, I'm sure that you can understand all the joy I felt when I read all about myself here in his journal. Kind of makes this whole thing just feel like some kind of family reunion, don't it? | „ |
~ Doc Benton rightfully pointed out that he only kills out of necessity, current nature, and history with John Winchester. |
It is evident that Benton's sanity had since fractured from living the very grisly immortal lifestyle he achieved. He always maintained a calm composure while performing his surgery, even when his victims were screaming in pain. As insane and sadistic as he was however, Benton made it clear that he only stole other people's organs out of necessity instead of out of genuine malice and sadism.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | That's the thing, it's not black magic, there's no blood sacrifice or anything. It's just science, Dean. | „ |
~ Sam to Dean about Doc Benton's secrets. |
- Alchemy-Enhanced Physiology: An achieved doctor, Doc Benton invented a scientific formula that endows the user immortality (which is its main purpose), pain resistance, and enhanced strength at the cost of the loss of one's natural healing factor, forcing them to steadily replace their damaged/run down organs. Though they could act normally even with crippled body parts, it would be a matter of time before such handicaps hinder him.
- Immortality: The main purpose of Benton's immortality-bestowing alchemy formula was to virtually prolong the recipient's life, which was succesful on Benton since he could virtually forever, though it severely handicapped his healing factor and his enhanced body is susceptible to decay and damage, forcing him to steadily replace his organs in order to stay active at its fullest.
- Enhanced Strength: Doc Benton's alchemically enhanced body possesses greater strength beyond his appearance suggested, able to punch through a car window as if it was a paper, and to lift Dean up like a feather.
- Pain Resistance: Doc Benton's alchemically enhanced body attained greater resistance to physical pain, allowing him to power through serious injuries and continue to function all while barely reacting to punishments in question.
- Master Physician: As an achieved doctor, Benton possesses astonishing surgeon skills, managing to cut the organs out of his victims with very precise surgical precision, as noted by the coroner, that he "knew his way around a scalpel".
Quote[]
“ | Dean: A little "antiques roadshow" surgery, some organ theft. But why is this all sounding familiar? Sam: Because you heard it before. When you were a kid... from Dad. Doc Benton... real-life doctor, lived in New Hampshire, brilliant and obsessed with alchemy, especially how to live forever. So, in 1816, Doc abandons his practice and... Dean: Right, yeah, nobody hears from him for like 20 years, and all of sudden, people start showing up dead. Sam: Dead or – or missing an organ or the hand or some other kind of part. Dean: Cause whatever he was doing was actually working. He just kept on ticking. Parts would wear out, he'd replace them. But I thought Dad hunted him down and took his heart out. Sam: Yeah, I guess the Doc must have plugged in a new one. Dean: All right, where's he doing the deed? Sam: According to this, Benton's picky about where he sets up his lab. He likes dense forest with access to a river or stream or some kind of freshwater. Dean: (Taking another huge bite of his burger) Why? Sam: Because that's where he likes to dump the bile and intestines and fecal matter. |
