~ Darkseid ordering another invasion of Earth to take the Anti-Life Equation. |
Darkseid, born Uxas, is the overarching antagonist of the 2021 DC Extended Universe superhero film Zack Snyder's Justice League, the director’s cut of the 2017 film Justice League.
He is an ancient and all-powerful cosmic warlord who reigns over the planet Apokolips and desires to rule the multiverse with the Anti-Life Equation. After he invaded Earth thousands of years ago in which the planet contained the Anti-Life Equation, he was beaten and lost the three Mother Boxes used in the invasion in his retreat.
He tasked his exiled uncle and former herald, Steppenwolf, to retrieve the boxes and finally take over Earth after Superman's death. He is also the arch-nemesis of the Justice League. In a potential dark future known as the Knightmare, Darkseid was successful in activating the Anti-Life Equation, using it to corrupt Superman and turn the Earth into a hellish wasteland.
He was portrayed by Ray Porter, who also played Count Grisham in The Scarecrow, The Whale in Monk, Hestler Jones in Justified, the Nightmare Train in The Little Engine That Could, and Satan in Animated Stories From the New Testament.
Biography[]
Past[]
Not much is unknown about Uxas' life, but what is known is that he was born on the hell-like planet of Apokolips. Prior to his rise to power, he developed a strong obsession for the Anti-Life Equation, a mathematical formula that can give him the power to control anyone to his will.
First Invasion of Earth[]
“ | A great armada appeared in the sky, laying waste to all who opposed it. the leader of the invaders is a being called Darkseid, a name cursed and feared in every universe. Darkseid was met in battle by Earth's invaders: The Old Gods, men, Atlanteans before their descent into the sea, Amazons before their betrayal and enslavement and guardians from the stars. Their histories had taught them not to trust each other, not to hope for an alliance, to fight apart. As Darkseid waged war on Earth, he found a secret there. A power hidden in the infinity of space. He called forth mystics who worshipped and controlled three objects, the Mother Boxes. Indestructible living machines, made from a science so advanced, it looks like sorcery. To conquer, three boxes have to synchronize and join together into The Unity. The Unity cleanses a planet with fire, transforming it into a copy of the enemy's world. All who live become servants of Darkseid, alive but drained of life: Parademons. But before The Unity could sychronize, the defenders of Earth attacked and fought as one; Amazons fighting alongside Atlanteans, Zeus and his son Ares alongside the guardians from the sky, a golden age of heroes fighting together to defend life on Earth. They did what no man did: sent the enemies back into the stars. | „ |
~ Wonder Woman on Darkseid's failed invasion of Earth. |
Thousands of years ago, Uxas waged war on Earth and traveled there with his armada and a great army. Upon his arrival, he discovered the Anti-Life Equation and gained access to the power. He then began to synchronize the three Mother Boxes into the unity, which would terraform Earth into a copy of Apokolips. Uxas planned to use Earth as a test-run for the Anti-Life Equation.
However, before he could even claim the Equation, the native beings of Earth consisting of Humans, Amazons, Atlanteans, and the Gods of Olympus/Old Gods, formed their own army to protect their world. They even managed to send a call for help to the Green Lantern Corps, who sent in a Green Lantern called Yalan Gur to assist the forces of Earth. During an ensuing battle that followed, Uxas personally led the charge against the enemy army and slew countless Humans, Amazons, and Atlanteans, inflicting heavy casualties on Earth's protectors.
After slaying Yalan Gur in a brief battle, he was soon met by three of the Old Gods: Artemis, Ares, and Zeus. He was immediately overpowered by the three Olympians, forcing him and his army to retreat. Zeus then proceeded to disable the three Mother Boxes before they could fully synchronize.
Rejuvenation and re-ascension[]
In the aftermath of his failed invasion, Uxas lost not only millions of his Parademon forces but also the Mother Boxes and the Anti-Life Equation in just one swoop. Despite his defeat, he was undeterred and vowed to claim the Equation again. After he returned to his homeworld and had recovered from his fatal injuries, Uxas' power of position became nearly nonexistent. The loss of his influence resulted in a war that would last for thousands of years, likely due to his defeat at the hands of Earth, which Apokolips deemed as a primitive planet. Darkseid's uncle, Steppenwolf betrayed his nephew in order to usurp his throne but had a change of heart and defeated those who also sought to claim Uxas' power. Unfortunately, despite this, Darkseid banished Steppenwolf from Apokolips before ordering him to conquer 150,000 planets so he could redeem himself.
Refocusing on the Terran populace[]
As the exact location of the Anti-Life Equation, the planet that hides it, as well as the whereabouts of the Mother Boxes, have all been forgotten. It was true since those who had joined with Darkseid during his failed invasion were all dead, Darkseid was forced to conquer planet after planet in a search that would span thousands of years in order to find the Anti-Life Equation.
Second Invasion of Earth[]
A millennia later in 2017, Steppenwolf, during his invasion of Earth, had already found and retrieved two of the Mother Boxes from the Amazons and Atlanteans. He would then discover that Earth is the planet that contained the Anti-Life Equation. With this discovery, Steppenwolf contacts DeSaad, Darkseid's master torturer, to inform him that Earth is the lost planet. After DeSaad made sure that this is confirmed, he summoned Darkseid, who then appeared before Steppenwolf. Not happy to see his uncle, as he was still angry over his betrayal, Darkseid demanded if it was true that he had found the Anti-Life Equation. Steppenwolf confirmed this. Darkseid then entrusted his uncle a second chance at redemption by ordering him to find the third Mother Box and synchronize The Unity in order to prepare for his arrival so he could claim his "great prize".
In his base of operations in Pozharnov, Russia, Steppenwolf, having successfully retrieved the last Mother Box, began to form the Unity so as to prepare for his uncle's arrival. During his battle with a superhero group called the Justice League, a boom tube to Apokolips opened and Darkseid, who was accompanied by DeSaad and Granny Goodness, revealed himself. When Cyborg failed to prevent The Unity, the Mother Boxes successfully synchronized, to the horror of the heroes, causing Steppenwolf to rejoice that his master had come. As the Unity began to terraform Earth, the Flash tapped into the speed force, going faster than the speed of light, causing him to reverse time and preventing Earth from being completely terraformed.
The Mother Boxes were then disabled by Cyborg and Superman, though DeSaad would note that they were destroyed. After Steppenwolf was slain by Wonder Woman, who used her sword to decapitate him, and his corpse landed in Apokolips, Darkseid crushed Steppenwolf's head and had a briefly stare-down with Superman before the boom tube closed. While he expressed anger that Steppenwolf had failed, DeSaad reminded the Overlord that his uncle was likely to fail to which Darkseid agreed. When asked on how he will claim his "great prize", noting that the Mother Boxes were destroyed, Darkseid claimed to DeSaad that the Anti-Life Equation had been found and they will stop at nothing to claim it. Darkseid then ordered him to ready their Armada so they could claim the Equation albeit by the old ways rather than the boom tubes, thus beginning his second invasion.
Knightmare[]
In a possible future, Darkseid invades Earth and successfully claims the Anti-Life Equation. He then presumably murders Superman's lover Lois Lane, which Batman failed to prevent. Because he was consumed with grief over Lois' death, Superman succumbs to the Anti-Life Equation, becoming the tyrannical ruler of Earth and Darkseid’s champion, replacing the late Steppenwolf. The regime was then formed with its members being completely loyal to their totalitarian ruler. During the Knightmare timeline, both Wonder Woman and Aquaman were killed, with the latter being slain by Darkseid himself. This earns the New God with the hatred of Aquaman's wife, Princess Mera, who seeks to kill him in revenge. Consequently, with the loss of both the two aforementioned heroes, their people and their respective homes, Themiscyra and Atlantis, fell to Darkseid's forces.
In response to Superman's regime, Batman forms and becomes the leader of the Insurgency, a rebel organization, in opposition to the former's rule, thus beginning a prolonged conflict between the Insurgency and the Regime. Eventually, the Regime prevailed and most Insurgents were either converted into Parademons or were killed, and Batman himself was captured and taken captive. The Dark Knight was then ruthlessly killed by a rage-driven Superman, who blames Batman for failing to save Lois. Thus with the death of Batman, Cyborg and the Flash are the only Justice League members left alive. With the Anti-Life Equation in his possession, Darkseid can now conquer the Multiverse, becoming a supreme overlord in the process.
Personality[]
The ultimate living personification of destruction, megalomania, ruthlessness, and above all, tyranny, Darkseid is a being of pure and utter malevolence, seemingly focused solely on his own mission to obtain the Anti-Life Equation, which in turn would enforce the submission of all life in the universe. He desires complete and total conquest of all existence and subservience, forcing his armies to bow before him whilst in his presence.
Darkseid is a murderous monster who takes pleasure in killing his enemies and happily scorches entire worlds of life, turning them hellish and apocalyptic like his home world, Apokolips.
His malevolence has caused him to lose anything even resembling empathy or compassion, even to his own family. This is shown in his interaction with his uncle, Steppenwolf, whom he cast out after he tried to usurp his throne and wanted to conquer 100,000 worlds all for him to satisfy his thirst for power.
Powers and Abilities[]
Darkseid is an extremely powerful member of the New Gods, one of (if not the) mightiest beings in the entire multiverse of the DCEU. His most iconic ability is the utilization of his infamous Omega Beams. He is also vastly intelligent, ruling Apokolips with an iron fist and making Superman think Batman had taken Lois Lane from him, albeit in a dark possible future implied to have taken root in the present day.
Quotes[]
“ | Steppenwolf: My lord. Darkseid: Oh, Steppenwolf. Steppenwolf: My lord, I am but your humble servant. Darkseid: Can it be true that you have found it? Steppenwolf: I have, great one. The lost world is Earth. Anti-Life is here. Darkseid: If it is redemption you seek, find the third Box, synchronize the Unity, and when this world is scorched, I will come for my great prize. Steppenwolf: You will come to Earth? Darkseid: I have turned one hundred-thousand worlds to dust looking for Anti-Life, looking for those who robbed me of my glory. Trivia[]
- In the original script for Justice League, Darkseid and Steppenwolf were brothers, the children of Heggra, but the final version has Darkseid as Steppenwolf's nephew akin to the original comic book versions and most other adaptations.
- After Batman leaves Lex Luthor in his cell, Luthor screams that "he" is coming and that "he" is hungry (It has been confirmed by Zack Snyder that he was talking about Darkseid and not Steppenwolf).
- Darkseid was originally going to physically appear in Justice League. However, Joss Whedon entered into the project to do some reshoots ordered by Warner Bros. After Zack Snyder left the project in the wake of a family tragedy, Whedon cut Darkseid's scenes. Many fans then started to sign petitions to get Snyder's original cut from the film to be restored, which they succeeded in early 2020.
- Upon being cast as Darkseid, Ray Porter was guided by Zack Snyder and writer Chris Terrio with their comic book lore about Darkseid, as Porter was unfamiliar with the character. Porter portrayed the role through motion capture and had to go "through a few different vocal gymnastics trying to figure out the voice" until he succeeded.
- It was confirmed that Darkseid would be appearing in the upcoming The New Gods film, but it was unknown whether Ray Porter would reprise his role or if Darkseid will be recast, though Porter has expressed his interest in returning. However, on April 1, 2021, the movie was officially cancelled by Warner Bros.
- This is the first Darkseid to be featured in a live-action film and the second one to be featured in a live-action format, the first being Darkseid from Smallville.
