We are the Cult of the Tree! We watch in the night!
~ Ilmo Koskela presenting the cult to Agent Nightingale while killing him in the ritual, as well as his most famous quote.

The Cult of the Tree are the secondary antagonists in the 2023 survival horror videogame Alan Wake II, the third installment of the Alan Wake franchise.

It is a mysterious and sinister cult, led by the brothers Ilmo and Jaakko Koskela and were responsible for the series of murders in Bright Falls in 2023, which would lead FBI agents Saga Anderson and Alex Casey to investigate the case. Later, it is revealed that protect the town from the threats of the Dark Presence through fear and ritual murders, killing people who emerged from Cauldron Lake before being turned into Taken, and even planned to kill writer Alan Wake after his return from the Dark Place for creating more chaos through his manuscripts.

History[]

Past[]

In 2013, the Cult of the Tree was founded by the Koskela brothers as a secret group to protect the people of Bright Falls and its surrounding areas after the Torchbearers disbanded long ago, leaving no one to defend the community. The cult also worked to fight against the threat that stalks them all: The Dark Presence. After that, the cult members began to find some people emerging from Cauldron Lake, but knowing that they contained its influence, they would have to kill them in the form of a sacrificial ritual before they became Taken. Their method involved tying up the hostage, opening their chest, removing their heart, and using the Clicker to fill their body with light, similar to what Alan Wake did to banish the Dark Presence within Barbara Jagger's body.

Due to their constant surveillance in the woods of Bright Falls, Watery, and around Cauldron Lake, the Cult would hang tree-shaped ornaments as a way to scare anyone walking at night, as well as spread frightening rumors of their group so that they would turn and run to safety rather than walk through the woods, where it was not safe. Over the years, the cult has carried out this series of ritualistic murders in the Bright Falls area against anyone who leaves Cauldron Lake. The 2010 event attracted several government authorities, however, in order to stay informed of events, the Koskela brothers deliberately manipulated the monitoring station at Cauldron Lake, owned by the Federal Bureau of Control, so that the cult would be informed of activities rather than the agency.

They also prepared for Alan Wake's return, as due to his disappearance in 2010, manuscript pages would float out of the lake, including more Possessed, which they considered him to be responsible for "helping" the Dark Presence. While continuing their activities, the Koskela brothers attempted to recruit Tor and Odin Anderson into their ranks to no avail. By 2023, the cult recruited Vladimir Blum in hopes he could sway the Anderson Brothers to join them.

Alan Wake II[]

In 2023, FBI Agent Robert Nightingale returns from the shores of Cauldron Lake, where he is discovered by the cult and apprehend for their sacrificial ritual. The event was interrupted by the presence of tourists Ed and Tammy Booker, causing the cult to go after them and not using the Clicker. As a result, FBI agents Saga Anderson and Alex Casey are sent to Bright Falls to investigate the murder and Nightingale was turned into a overlap guardian.

After the FBI arrived, the cult grew tired of their interference but remained covert, but numerous members were turned into taken such as Deputies Mulligan and Thornton. Despite their losses, they turned their attention to Wake, learning that he had return from Cauldron Lake. Learning his location at Elderwood Palace Lodge, the cult proceed to attack but were killed by Scratch and the Koskela brothers were arrested by the bureau. Following their arrest, Saga arrives to give Alan the Clicker, but the Dark Presence possesses him, kills Jaakko and attempts to take the item of power. After Scratch's escape, Ilmo confesses the truth behind the cult to Saga to understand that his and Jaakko's actions committed were to protect everyone. With Bright Falls needing protection, Saga tells Ilmo to continue his cult operations until they can stop Scratch.

Trivia[]

  • Although the Cult of the Tree purpose is to prevent people from becoming Taken to hurt innocents of Bright Falls, ironically their own cult members unexpectedly become Taken, due to their inability in skill against a paranormal entity as the Federal Bureau of Control does.
