Glossu Rabban, also known as The Beast, is a major antagonist in the 1965 epic science fiction novel Dune by the late Frank Herbert and its adaptations.
As the first-born son of Abulurd Rabban, he is the older brother of Feyd-Rautha and the eldest nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen who is additionally a member of House Harkonnen in the process. Due to his penchant for sadism and cruelty without the intelligence of other members of the Harkonnens, Rabben was given the nickname "The Beast". He is also the archenemy of Gurney Halleck, to whom he gave a scar during their conflict.
He was portrayed by the late Paul L. Smith, who also played Bluto in the 1980 Popeye film, in the 1984 film and by László Imre Kish in the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy) miniseries. In the 2021 film adaptation, he was portrayed by Dave Bautista, who also played Owen Davidson in Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, Mr. Hinx in Spectre, Aldar in Smallville, Tong Po in Kickboxer: Vengeance, Leonard in Knock at the Cabin, and the Parakeet King in the English version of The Boy and The Heron.

~ Count Rabban in search for Paul Atreides. |
Rabban lives up to his nickname of "the Beast". Above all else, he is a cruel sadist and a vicious brute. His rule over Arrakis was effectively nothing more than him terrorizing its inhabitants for his own pleasure. His bloodlust was so insatiable that the Baron used this as a means of making his other nephew, Feyd-Rautha, look like a hero by comparison.
While Rabban possessed the Harkonnen traits of sadism and brutality, he was not as intelligent as his younger brother or their uncle, respectively. So much so that his uncle referred to him as a 'tank brain' on certain occasions, henceforth Rabban did not seem to understand the fact that his uncle had merely been using him all along. However, it is possible that Rabban, while not that smart, is also not totally stupid either. He was the first Harkonnen who knew that the Fremen were far more numerous than originally believed. He also tried warning his uncle that the Fremen could pose a serious danger, but the Baron only brushed the Fremen threat off as a bunch of savages.
Biography[]
In the aftermath of the Harkonnen attack on the House of Atreides on Arrakis that nearly destroyed the House, Rabban was left in charge of Arrakis by his uncle. Harkonnen gave him orders to squeeze the populace and to set new lows in cruelty and depraved behavior. Harkonnen's intention was that when the people of Arrakis were crushed enough, he would send Feyd to save the people of Arrakis and become a hero to the people there.
What none of the Harkonnen leaders anticipated was that Duke Leto's consort Lady Jessica and son Paul Atreides would survive and be taken in by the Fremen natives of Arrakis. Paul would lead the Fremen in a war against the Harkonnen, which brought spice production to a standstill. Fearing for his life, Rabban never told his uncle of the difficulties he was having while trying to stop the Fremen.
1984 Film[]
When the Emperor arrived on Arrakis, one of his first actions was to have Rabban seized. Harkonnen forces informed the Baron of this fact. Shortly afterwards, the Emperor had Rabban beheaded and the Beast's head set in front of the Emperor's throne on his personal starship. When the Baron arrived, he was horrified to see the lifeless head of his nephew sitting on a platter in front of the Emperor and the Imperial Court.
2000 Miniseries[]
During the Fremen attack on the Harkonnen, the Fremen get a hold of the Beast. The Beast was beaten to death by the townspeople, and his head was cut off in the process, which was then delivered to the Emperor.
2021 Film[]
Glossu is shown as the main Harkonnen leader on Arrakis, overseeing the Harkonnen spice operation before the Emperor strips the Harkonnens of Arrakis and entrusts it to Duke Leto Atreides. Glossu is enraged at the Emperor's decision but is counseled by his uncle Baron Harkonnen and his advisor Piter de Vries that the Emperor's "gift" to Leto might not be all it appears. Baron Harkonnen correctly informs Glossu that the Emperor was likely using this as part of a scheme to bring down the Atreides.
During the Harkonnen attack on the Atreides on Arrakis, Glossu leads Harkonnen forces into battle, personally executing numerous captured Atreides soldiers.
Following Leto's failed assassination of Baron Harkonnen (which still left the Baron severely injured and recuperating), Glossu informs Baron Harkonnen that Paul Atreides was dead, as Harkonnen forces had pursued him into a Coriolis storm, and Glossu claimed nothing could survive such weather. Satisfied, the Baron instructed Glossu to resume spice production on Arrakis but to slowly release the Harkonnen reserves of spice, warning his nephew not to flood the market. When Glossu asked what to do with the Fremen, the Baron instructed him to "kill them all".
2024 Film[]
Following the death of Duke Leto Atreides and many of the military force of House Atreides, Rabban is appointed to govern Arrakis, returning the production of spice to its former glory prior to the transfer of governance to House Atreides. However, much in part to the efforts of Stilgar's sietch stopping spice production, his rule over the planet has been wavering. Thus, he has turned his plans to seeking out the sietches and killing Paul Muad'Dib by any means necessary, even if it means hemorrhaging resources that the Harkonnens do not have.
Rabban witnesses the Fremen striking back against his systems and commands his minions to take down their bases, furiously smashing a guard’s head against his screen for suggesting they should conserve their resources. When it doesn’t work out to his advantage, Baron Harkonnen has his other son, Feyd-Rautha grab him and kiss his feet before demoting his position: threatening that the next time he fails, he dies.
Rabban thus takes a backseat and guards Arrakeen with his troops. Rabban, in a desperate move to save himself when the Fremen and Gurney launch invasions, leaves Baron and Feyd-Rautha. Rabban, noticing that Gurney and his people are heading towards him, decides to battle Gurney, but he is eventually overwhelmed and stabbed to death, ending his horrific reign.
