“ | Enough! Enough! That's my last warning. Now, we will get to the truth of this matter. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Captain Kouri, I forget, is that the eighth or ninth commandment? | „ |
~ Garret questioning Kouri regarding Deacon. |
Colonel Matthew Garret is one of two main antagonists (alongside Jessie Williamson) of the 2019 survival-horror video game Days Gone.
He is the leader of the Deschutes County Militia, who believes they are humanity's last line of defense in saving the Freaker-ravaged Earth after the Freaker apocalypse. He meets Deacon St. John and lets him join the Militia, but it is short lived when Skizzo, who is enemies with Deacon, convinced Garret that Deacon was a bad person.
He is voiced by Daniel Riordan, who also played Alduin in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Walter Hardy in Marvel's Spider Man, and Bhunivelze in Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
Appearance[]
Garret is an elderly man with an average build, presumably in his early-60s, who has grey hair and moustache, as well as brown eyes.
His regular clothing consists of an olive-coloured hat with the insignia of a U.S. Army Colonel eagle in front of it, as well as green winter jacket, a brown buttoned shirt with four stars, and a dark blue tee on the inside. Around his shirt is a gun holster that contains his signature revolver, "The Mayor". He wears a black belt with a circular gold buckle that has the "DCM" insignia, as well as brown pants and boots.
Biography[]
Background[]
A former Colonel of the U.S. Army, Matthew Garret spearheaded the foundation of the Deschutes County Militia during the Freaker apocalypse, where he begins recruiting survivors into the newly-founded militia. During the Militia's foundation, they began attacking NERO facilities, as well as government facilities, while also capturing supplies and cache of weapons in the span of just two years. He and his militia also bombed bridges, which prevented Freakers from advancing any further. Sometime after, Colonel Garret and the militia members later settle in on Wizard Island in the Crater Lake region as the militia's base of operations.
Days Gone[]
Before the events of the game, Colonel Garret believes that Deschutes County Militia are the last hope of humanity's survival, and later begins recruiting more survivors, as well as scientists and engineers who began developing anti-Freaker weapons for the Militia. One of those scientists was Sarah Whitaker, a researcher from Cloverdale labs, as well as Deacon St. John's wife. His recruitment later expanded into sending field teams, where they later gather human civilization's knowledge and later stored them into a repository called "The Ark", located inside of the island's volcano.
The events of Doctor Arturo Jiminez's death, while it caused by Wade Taylor, have left a significant impact on Garret's psyche. This later turns Garret's personality in a state of paranoia and psychosis, causing him to forcibly move all skilled personnel inside the Ark, including James Weaver and Sarah Whitaker. Garret's growing paranoia doesn't conclude, as he begins initiating his so-called crusade, known as "Holy War", during his one of the speeches, known as the Shadow of Death. He later captures Sarah and Deacon, in their attempted but failed escape, while he was following Raymond "Skizzo" Sarkozi, a former member of Lost Lake Camp and Mike "Iron Mike" Wilcox's former second-in-command, who is later exiled for his traitorous actions, on a tour of the militia camp.
After a brawl between Deacon and Skizzo, both of them are put in trial by Garret. In the midst of the trial, with Skizzo's convincing hypocrisy that is passed off as "truth", Garret later sentences Deacon to death by hanging. In addition to that, Garret later accepts Skizzo to be his second-in-command, with the latter telling the former about the exact location of Lost Lake Camp to start an attack there, while Garret puts Sarah captive inside his chamber.
However, this effort of hanging Deacon later proves futile when his former second-in-command Derrick Kouri aided Deacon in his escape from being hanged by Garret during the trial inside Garret's chamber.
After the preemptive attack on Wizard Island, spearheaded by Deacon St. John and a band of survivors from the north, Garret was later poisoned to death by Sarah with a herbal tea that was riddled with water hemlock. His death later caused the entire Deschutes County Militia to be fully dissolved, as well as his loyalist members willingly surrendering to the survivors. Garret is later succeeded by James Weaver as the leader of the Wizard Island survivor camp after his death.
Personality[]
Initially, Garret is always shown to be calm and composed when leading the militia, but that doesn't mean he is not serious when leading the militia, as he mentioned once he never tolerates criminals in his ranks. He is also seen to be idealistic, who thinks that he and his militia are the last hope to humanity's revival, in spite of the obvious. He is a fundamentalist, who often quotes biblical scriptures including the Ten Commandments. However, in one of his speeches, We Do Not Discriminate, despite being a die-hard fundamentalist, he is also tolerable towards other recruits, regardless of how they were born.
“ | These past few days, dozens of new recruits have joined our ranks. We welcome you. We do not care about the color of your skin. We do not care what country you were born in. We do not care if you are a man or a woman. We do not care if you are gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender[...] | „ |
~ Colonel Garret in a excerpt of We Do Not Discriminate. |
After Arturo Jiminez's death, however, he slowly descents into inescapable insanity, where he becomes insane to the point of forcing his personnel to be locked up inside the Ark. At the same time, he begins treating human rival camps as a far greater threat than Freakers, later initiating his so-called "Holy War". This form of obsession comes at a price, where other members of his militia including Derrick Kouri have alienated him for his current personality.
Quote[]
“ | I have had — a revelation. Last night, a new group of recruits joined our ranks and have already been sworn in. They have traveled far, from the east, west, south, and north. Their coming to this place, at this time, is no accident. They bring word of more camps, like the one to the south, which we have purged, camps filled with degenerates, thieves, drug addicts, and murderers. We are threatened! All of us! Every day we live in the shadow of death. But that shadow is not cast by rabid Freaks that surround us. They are part of God's plan. They are part of God's punishment. No! No, it is not the Freaks who threaten to destroy us. It is our fellow man. Like Noah before us, we have built an ark, to save mankind. To save all the knowledge so that when the flood waters recede, we may rebuild. But in this age, here at the end of the world — God is not sending the oceans from their beds to rise up and sweep away the damned. There will be no baptism of water. No. In this last age, we are the flood. We are sent forth, to baptize the world — with fire! Today, we begin a Holy War against those who have brought down the wrath of God. We will move north! Seek out the depraved and cleanse them — from the world. We will move south, find the enclaves of the degenerate and destroy them. We will head east — uncover the obscene and purge them. We will head west, cast light— | „ |
~ Colonel Matthew Garret and his descent to complete villainy. |
“ | You were in a NERO camp that was overrun. How long have you been spying on us? How long?! | „ |
~ Garret fuming in front of Sarah Whitaker after finding out that she is a drifter. |
“ | Shut up! All of you! I know what's happening out there — out there! — outside the ark! But it's — out — there. We are safe. In here. Nothing can touch us. Do you hear me? God has ordained this place — this is — consecrated ground. We are safe in this place. We are — safe — in this place. | „ |
~ Garret attempting to stop the chaos from the outside. |
Trivia[]
- Despite being called Colonel in the game, Garret's shirt has a military insignia of four stars, which often ranks as a General of the U.S. Army. This mostly implies that Garret is a U.S. Army General, rather than a U.S. Army Colonel.
- The Mayor is Garret's signature weapon of choice, which can be unlocked by Deacon after the game's main story completion, which is by completing the "Law and Disorder" storyline.
