Baron Paglon is a minor antagonist from Heroes Chronicles: Revolt of the Beastmasters. He was an Erathian noble and one of the main supporters of Mad King Gryphonheart.

Biography[]

Baron Paglon was an Erathian noble who, along with two others, the infamous Lord Onsten and Earl Rambert, supported the tyrannical rule of the Mad King Gryphonheart, who enslaved the mud landers who were formerly slaves to the barbarians. However, the ancestors sent the immortal hero Tarnum to lead a revolt and free them. Lord Onsten tried to put down the uprising with brutality, but he was defeated, his castle was captured and Tarnum killed him. However, after the death of one of his henchmen, the mad Gryphonheart immediately took the uprising seriously and assigned Baron Paglon to defeat the enemy. The baron had more power, soldiers and castles than Onsten, making him a bigger challenge for the rebels, however, he didn't play fair either. He hired bounty hunters, promising them a high reward if they killed Tarnum, and stipulated that they could rob, kill, or do whatever they wanted with the escaped slaves. Paglon wanted to intimidate the rebels with this, and also to buy time, since the Mad King Gryphonheart had also sent him reinforcements. At the same time, Tarnum was right that the king did not send the baron a bigger army, only a bigger group and rersources. The reinforcements arrived fifteen days later. After several weeks, however, the rebels defeated the baron's armies and captured two castles, but Paglon was still alive. Meanwhile, the rebels found the treasures acquired by the rogues in the southwest direction and were surprised to see that the criminals had looted thousands of gold from the slained slaves. Then the baron decided to use similar methods against the rebels as Onsten.

Gryphonheart issued a decree that ten silver would be given to everyone for the head of a slain slave, and Paglon began ordering the bounty hunters to kill whatever they could in the swamp and mutilate the corpses. Tarnum soon received a report that a small group of runaway slaves, including women and pups, had been killed by bounty hunters, their heads cut off and the bodies hanged to trees. The intimidation worked, as a team carrying the supplies deserted and the entire wagon of supplies was missing. Later, Tarnum found the remains of the deserters, who were ambushed by Baron Paglon's rogues, killed and robbed, their heads were cut off, and the cave and nearby trees were set on fire. However, the massacres grew larger and more brutal, and after four days Tarnum received reports that bounty hunters were constantly gathering in front of Paglon's castle in exchange for the bounty, while more and more innocents were being killed. One of them brought a cartload of heads in exchange for the silver.

However, the baron realized that he had fallen into a trap and it was not certain that he would be able to escape again. His castle was surrounded by mountains, and Tarnum built a garrison not far away, with which he could keep the baron in his castle while he prepared for the attack. Mad King Gryphonheart sent reinforcements again, but it wasn't too much either. Paglon then tried to make a deal with Tarnum that he would be willing to give him half of his wealth if he would let him go. However, the rebel leader refused this as he believed it only showed his cowardice to try to bribe him, but that was not the primary reason. In his own opinion, Paglon was even worse than Onsten, the many innocents who died because of him, the mutilated bodies and the incitement of bounty hunters to the innocent population, the rebel leader believed that the baron should pay for his actions and he would not let escape him this time. Tarnum launched the attack a little later and besieged Paglon's castle, killed the baron and the rebels won another great victory.

Personality[]

Based on his actions, Paglon was a spineless, sneaky, cowardly, vile person. He openly incited the bounty hunters, murderers and robbers against the innocents living in the swamp, but he did not dare to face his actions, he always tried to escape.
