Ahmed is the main antagonist of the fifth Goosebumps book, The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb.
Overview[]
Ahmed is part of a long family line of Egyptian men tasked with upholding the will of Priestess Khala. As per the will of Khala, anyone who disturbs her tomb is to be killed by being mummified alive. To uphold the will, the family was tasked with killing and mummifying anyone who disturbs the tomb. In effect, the family has been murdering people for centuries.
As the latest in his line of serial killing tomb guardians, Ahmed tries to warn people away from the tomb by claiming there is a curse. In the story, the protagonist, Gabe, is visiting his uncle Ben and cousin Sari in Egypt for Christmas break. Ben, an archaeologist, is investigating the pyramid in which the tomb of Khali is located. Ahmed, being a certified cryptographer, gets himself hired as Ben's assistant to try and prevent him from uncovering the tomb. To prevent the unsealing of the tomb, Ahmed frightens two of Ben's workers into falling ill. When Ben continues to investigate, Ahmed tries to kidnap Gabe and Sari to create a hostage situation to get Ben to stop investigating.
Escaping from Ahmed, Gabe and Sari reunite with Ben, who takes them back to the pyramid to continue the investigation. Gabe and Sari end up accidentally stumbling into the tomb. Finding them there, Ahmed tries to kill the children. Ben arrives and tries to reason with Ahmed, but Ahmed knocks Ben out with a torch and attempts to kill the three. First trying to mummify the three alive, Ahmed switches his plan to simply throwing them in the tar pit to burn to death after they nearly escape. Ahmed is ultimately foiled when Gabe inadvertently temporarily revives the victims of Ahmed and his family, who rescue the family and chase Ahmed out of the pyramid.
Personality[]
Ahmed is highly devoted to the will of Khala, carrying out the order to kill and mummify anyone who disturbs her tomb. However, Ahmed takes his role to needlessly sadistic levels, showing pride in his work. He has a very loose definition of the word "disturb", as he will kill anyone who so much as ends up in the tomb even if by complete accident, even if they immediately try to leave without touching anything. He has no mercy for children. Even if a child ends up in the tomb by accident and immediately tries to exit without touching anything, he will not show mercy or bend the rules even a little bit. He demonstrates no remorse for doing this and does not see it as a necessary evil, showing no empathy for his victims. Ahmed presents himself as a highly intelligent and friendly, if paranoid and superstitious, cryptographer. He speaks calmly and quietly even when informing the protagonists that he is going to kill them. He is very determined to keep others from breaching the tomb, even resorting to trying to kidnap Gabe and Sari. Despite his dedication to the will of Khala, he is willing to skip over the tradition of mummifying the victims if they frustrate him enough with their escape attempts, instead simply throwing them into the tar pit.
