Please test VisualEditor in your language!

It is very important to us at the Editing Department that VisualEditor works in every language, for every user.

VisualEditor's editing environment is a browser ContentEditable element. This means that your input method editor (IME) should already know how to work with it. However, to make VisualEditor correctly edit wiki pages, we have to stop browsers in lots of ways from breaking the page.

Sometimes this can interfere with IMEs. To make sure we work in your IME, we need your help: please see wikimedia.github.io/VisualEditor/demos/ve/desktop-dist.html#!pages/simple.html. This is the core system inside VisualEditor which lets you write and edit. It is different from the full editor, and some of the tools you are used to will be missing.

We're interested in particular in whether you can write text at all, what happens when you select different candidate texts, and how VisualEditor behaves in general.

More details, and some early test results, are provided here: mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/IME_Testing#What_to_test.

We would love to hear from every language, and especially languages which use IMEs, like Japanese, Korean, Indic languages, Arabic and others. Thank you for your help.

Support request with team editing experiment project

Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future!   • You can now make charts and maps on your wiki with the new "graph" tool. If you have an old browser, you will see images instead. It uses a tool called Vega; you can learn how to use it and write help pages for your wiki. You can use the Vega edit tool to make charts and copy the code to your wiki. Charts and maps use complex code and you should put them into templates. In the future, you will be able to create charts with VisualEditor. [17] [18] [19]
  • You can apply for technical jobs to develop tools for the community. [20]
  • The logos of all wikis are now in a new place. It will make pages load faster. You can still ask to change the logo. You can also use local CSS for brief changes. [21] [22]

Content Translation beta feature is now available

Hello, Content Translation has now been enabled as an opt-in beta feature on the Urdu Wikipedia. To start translating:

  1. Please enable the Beta feature in your preferences and check the box for Content Translation.
  2. Visit the page Special:ContentTranslation or to your contributions page to open the tool.
  3. Click on the blue button to create a new translation.
  4. A dialog will be displayed. In the From section select the language of the original article and the article name, and the language you would like to translate to. Also add the title of the new article (or the original title will be inserted) and click on Translate to begin. Your language preferences will be remembered for the next time.
  5. You will see a screen consisting of three columns. The left column contains the text of the source language and the middle column is for the translated text. Using the right column you can perform several actions such as insert source text, remove the inserted text source text, add or remove links etc.
  6. After you translate the article, you can publish it directly as a new page on the Urdu Wikipedia by using the publish button that appears. In case the article gets created by another user while you were translating, you will see an option to save the newly published translation under your user namespace.
  7. The number of published pages can be seen on the Content Translation stats page.

Since, this is the first time we have installed the tool on this Wikipedia, there are chances that there may be some problems or service disruptions which we are not yet aware of. We will be monitoring the usage to check for any failures or issues, but please do let us know on the Content Translation talk page or through Phabricator if you spot any problems that prevent you from using the tool. For more information, please read the information available in the User Guide. You can also view a short screencast on how to use Content Translation. Hello!

I'm pleased to announce the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon.

It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor. In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page on TranslateWiki.

The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store[1]. Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify[2].

If you are at Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4pm (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be confirmed in time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account to work there.

اردو ویکیپیڈیا کے شعبہ املا کے تحت ایک نئی سہولت (خودکار درستی املا) متعارف کرائی جارہی ہے۔ ویکی خانہ ترمیم (editor) میں جب کوئی صارف کسی غلط املا والے لفظ کو تحریر کرے اور اس کے بعد سپیس دے تو وہ غلط املا فورا درست ہوجائے گا؛ فی الحال اس سہولت کو مزید موثر بنانے کے لیے ایسے الفاظ کی فہرست درکار ہے جو عموما غلط لکھے جاتے ہیں، نیز اس منصوبہ میں مذکورہ طرز کے الفاظ کا مستقل بنیادوں پر اضا��ہ کرتے رہنا ہوگا۔

مثلا اردو ویکیپیڈیا کے خانہ ترمیم میں یہ الفاظ لکھیں اور سپیس دیں:

  • اسلاح
  • بھائ
  • آزمایشات

ہم لوگ عموماً دوسرے صارفین کی لکھی ہوئی تحریریں دیکھتے ہیں اور املا درست کرتے رہتے ہیں. جب انہیں درست کریں تو فوراً ایسے الفاظ کو مذکورہ بالا منصوبہ میں بھی شامل کردیں.

Recent changes

  • Tech News is trying to make reading the newsletter easier. The Recurrent item icon means the item is in the newsletter every week, but with new dates. The For technical readers icon means the item is mainly relevant for readers with technical knowledge. You can leave feedback on this change.
  • Timestamps in the protection log will now be in the user's timezone. Previously they would show Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). [200]

Problems

  • A problem with MediaWiki made some pages show no content on October 14. This has now been fixed. [201]
  • Some templates were misplaced in the Flow description bar. This could make it impossible to click on links. This will be fixed this week. [202]
  • The deployment of the new MediaWiki version was stopped on October 14. No new code was deployed for the rest of week. This meant planned changes did not happen. [203]

ایک توسیع نصب کرنا ہے جس کا نام ہے توسیع تبدیلی متن (Replace Text)، اس توسیع کے ذریعہ کسی لفظ مثلا کسی غلط املا والے لفظ کو تمام ویکی صفحات سے ایک ہی بار میں درست لفظ سے تبدیل کیا جا سکے گا. اس کے لیے احباب کی تائیدی رائے درکار ہے، اس توسیع کی مکمل تفصیل یہاں دیکھ سکتے ہیں.

Changes this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from October 27. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from October 28. It will be on all Wikipedias from October 29 (calendar).
  • The first time you use the visual editor, pop-ups will explain why and when you should use the citation and link tools. [209]
  • You will be able to upload images to Wikimedia Commons from inside the wikitext editor by clicking "Upload" in the "فائل رکھیں" dialog. You will also be able to drag and drop them into an article when using the visual editor. [210][211]
  • When you edit a code block in visual editor, you will have the syntax highlighted. [212][213]
  • Index and Page namespaces on Wikisource will be defined as content namespaces in $wgContentNamespaces. [214]

Recent changes

  • You can now see how many editors are using a gadget on a wiki on Special:GadgetUsage. [215]
  • If you are using the mobile version of Wikipedia, you can now see Wikidata descriptions under article titles in search results. [216]
  • Editing conflicts are now detected when you edit on a mobile device. Before, this did not work properly on mobile. [217]
