This article is about the 1986 Decepticon. For the 2003 Mini-con known as "Sweep" in Japan, see Run-Over.

They're actually both looking for characterization.
Let's see what you can see...

This article is in need of images.

Specifics: And no, we will not accept pictures that are actually Scourge!

Sweeps are Decepticons from the Generation One continuity family. Sweeps are the minions of Scourge created by Unicron. Sweeps are visually indistinguishable from Scourge himself, although Sweeps do not necessarily have identical voices. Although only a few are seen initially during Unicron's threat, there appears to be an inexhaustible supply of them later on. That's actually a good thing, as Galvatron tends to shoot them.

Like, all the time.

FFOD3 Sweeps

A rare moment of not being shot by Galvatron.

The original Sweeps were created by Unicron from fallen Decepticons, but the seemingly-infinite number suggests that Scourge or the Sweeps may possess self-cloning abilities similar to the Insecticons - altogether realistic, as the three original Insecticons were among the discarded bodies that Unicron used to form Cyclonus, Scourge, and their combined retinue. The Transformers: The Movie

Note:
  • There is, however, one small problem with the above. If the Insecticons were turned into Sweeps, then how do you explain their presence later on in the series? Hmm...
  • In earlier iterations of the script for The Transformers: The Movie, a battle for leadership in the Decepticon Hall of Heroes on Cybertron caused the essence of Megatron and other ancient Decepticons leaders (whose "Life Sparks" were enshrined in the giant statues decorating the Hall — one of which resembles Scourge even in the final film) to drift into space, where they were found by Ingestor (the early version of Unicron). Ingestor turned Megatron into Galvatron, and used the Life Sparks of the ancient Decepticon leaders to create Scourge, Cyclonus, and the Sweeps. This story element was dropped in the final version in favor of giving Galvatron new troops and killing off older characters all at the same time by having Unicron use those Decepticons on the movie production's "kill list" as raw material.

The Sweeps are by far the favorite cannon fodder of Galvatron, being beaten or destroyed in any number of abysmal ways. These ways include being thrown into the great beyond, into lava pits, and into the path of an energy-mongering transorganic vampire monster, and of course, being shot at by Galvatron. This may explain their perceived cowardice, as well as their tendency to grumble and whine, because who'd honestly be stoked about being the Redshirts for the Decepticons?. Well, while technically not "Sweeps", any additional Scourge toys you may own can easily function as Sweep toys, what with the characters being identical and all.
