The Deluxe Electronic Buzz Lightyear is a figure Manufactured by Hasbro beginning in 2001 and continued re-releases until 2008. This version of Buzz is an entirely new sculpt from the previous releases, featuring a myriad of innovations, including chest buttons in much more accurate shape, a sculpted but otherwise nonfunctional utility belt, and, most importantly, wings that swivel upwards just like in the films from the backpack instead of popping out from the sides. This figure's model was released in multiple different variants of color schemes and different features. The figure also has another identical variant released in 2002 under the name of ''Battle Buzz Lightyear'' with it's laser wrist being replaced with a firing missle gun, and a stripped down version of it with a shinier metallic green and a different molded backpack with no wings at all.

This is marked the first ever real-life Buzz figure to include wings that function like in the films. It is also the first figure based off the final version of Utility Belt Buzz from Toy Story 2. This inspired Thinkaway to make the mechanisim of their Buzz's wings.

Although this figure is retired since 2008, official Hasbro sites still contain downloadable instructions for the figure.[1]

Overview[]

This figure contains button-activated swinging retracting wings and a laser. His retractable helmet can click in when it is closed. He is also poseable with the arm shoulders unlike the other original dolls.

His phrases, voiced by Pat Fraley, who voices all of Hasbro's Buzz figures, are as follows:

  • Greetings, I am Buzz Lightyear, I come in peace.
  • I don't think we're in the Gamma Quadrant anymore.
  • I have a laser and I'll use it.
  • Hang on, cowboy!
  • Anti-gravity belt, standard issue.
  • Someone's got to stop that Evil Emperor Zurg!
  • Never tangle with a Space Ranger, my friend.
  • Look at my impressive wingspan!
True to his word, Buzz features a 12" wingspan, measuring as wide across as the figure is tall. This was a marketing point called out on the figure's packaging. He also features a laser with a variety of sounds and a substantially squishy head.

Overseas release[]

This figure was released in Spanish,[2] Japanese[3] and French.[4][5] In addition, his yellow name tag sticker has 'Lightyear' replaced with his European French dub name 'Buzz L'Éclair' which is nowhere present in the actual said dub of the films.

Innaccuracies[]

  • His bodyshape is a bit fatter differing from the other figures.
  • While he has more accurate wings than usual, they are still not an accurate design and they can only retract back in manually.
  • Utility Belt is molded into the waist, the accents are black when they should be silver, and the red handles are not removable and go around round the back, he also has no grappel hook at the back at all, nor a sculpt of it. The anti gravity belt's circle can't even be pushed nor lights up.
  • Jetpack clicks in.
  • Wings are easily removable and they click in when they shouldn't.
  • Wingtips don't have any lights.
  • He is voiced by Pat Fraley instead of Tim Allen.
  • Helmet can't go all the way inside his body.
  • Doesn't come in a spaceship box.
  • Head sculpt is totally different, alongside the facial expression and the purple colors are the wrong shades.
  • Does not include karate chop action.
  • The (fake) karate chop action button mold is the wrong look, such as the turbine being a mold instead of a sticker.
  • Waist is not rubber
  • Does not include a push-button helmet
  • Does not have a wrist communicator
  • None of his fingers are seperated
  • Wing button is in the wrong shape.
  • Does not include the phrase, "There's a secret mission in uncharted space, let's go."
  • Laser button is too small.
  • Laser light bulb is the wrong shape.
  • Laser doesn't stay on while the button is pushed
  • Laser is the wrong sound
  • Laser sticker's ''Laser'' logo is too small.
  • Front sticker does not have the words, "Space Ranger" on it.
  • Star command logo on front sticker should be white and gray, The background of the sticker should be a lighter blue.
  • Colors of oval chest buttons should be brighter.
  • Yellow "LIGHTYEAR" name tag is too small and too pale, along with the area being recessed.
  • Has screws in the wrong places.
  • White color isn't as bright, being more of a somewhat light gray-ish white.
  • Green is a park green colour instead of mint.
  • Purple colours should be darker.

Faults[]

  • It is very very common to see second-hand figures of these selling online missing their jetpacks and wings.

Trivia[]

  • If you look closely, this figure was occasionally used in Toy Story: The Musical when Sid is about to blast him off.[6] The figure is likewise, missing his jetpack and wings.
  • Unlike other full-inch Buzz's, this one's arms can articulate lower much like in the films.
  • The wrists may be reused from Thinkaway's original Buzz's, hence the design.
