- "The gentle lowing of cattle is the first thing a visitor to District 10 hears. This region raises strong, healthy livestock, which becomes the meat that helps us raise strong, healthy children of Panem."
- —Description from The Hunger Games: Tribute Guide[src]
District 10 is one of the thirteen districts of Panem. Its main industry is livestock, and it provides meat to the Capitol.
History[]
Before the First Rebellion, the Crane family developed luxury hotels in vacation spots across Panem, including in District 10.[1] Little is known of the district's role in the war, but when District 10 rebelled against the Capitol, the loss of its meat would have contributed to starvation conditions in the city while it was under siege.[2]
Second Rebellion[]
After the abrupt ending of the 75th Hunger Games, communications went down in District 7, District 10, and District 12.[3] In the weeks leading up to the Battle of the Capitol, District 13 received its first shipment of food from other districts, including real District 10 beef.[4]
Culture[]
Livestock industry[]
District 10 operated slaughterhouses, butchering hogs[1] and cattle. Unlike District 12,[5] 10 was one of the districts where adolescents participated in their industry, giving some tributes an advantage in the arena.
The district maintained the genetic diversity of its cattle herds by "implanting long-frozen cow embryos".[6]
Special occasions[]
The wedding ceremony used in District 4 is similar to the one used in District 10.[7]
Known tributes[]
Tributes[]
- Brandy - Shot dead by Peacekeepers for slitting the throat of her mentor, Arachne Crane, before the 10th Hunger Games. Placed 24th.[8]
- Tanner - Stabbed to death by Coral and Mizzen in the 10th Hunger Games. Placed 9th.[9]
- District 10 male (73rd HG) - Killed by the boy from District 2 with a brick. Placed 2nd out of 24.[10]
- District 10 female (74th HG) - Killed in the Cornucopia bloodbath.[11]
- District 10 male (74th HG) - Died on the eighth day from an unknown cause (presumably killed by the Careers). He placed 10th out of 24.[12][13]
Victors[]
- Unnamed Woman - Victor of an unspecified Hunger Games. Killed in the bloodbath.[14]
- Unnamed Man - Victor of an unspecified Hunger Games. Killed by an unknown "beast" on the second day, placing 9th.[15]
Location and geography[]
According to the map of Panem featured in The Hunger Games Adventures, District 10 is located in the southwest of North America. As the southernmost district of Panem, District 10's territory primarily corresponds to the western part of the U.S. state of Texas and the northern and central Mexican states of Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas. District 10 is one of the three Panemian districts located mostly outside the contiguous United States, alongside District 7 and District 13, primarily being located in northern and central Mexico. Historically, the flat topography in most of these regions was ideal for raising cattle and other livestock, which ties well with the district's industry.
District 10 borders three districts: District 11 (to the northeast), District 2 (to the north), and District 5 (to the northwest).
Trivia[]
- Districts 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10 were not involved in the rebel plot during the third Quarter Quell.[3]
- In the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, both female tributes from District 10 died during the Cornucopia bloodbath, while the male tributes survived a bit longer, but then later died from an unknown cause. This is the opposite of District 5.
- District 10 was the 5th - 10th district to pry from Capitol rule during the Second Rebellion.
- Dalton, Brandy, and Tanner are the only named people from District 10.
- In the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, District 10 was one of the two districts to have no named tributes. The other was District 9.
- In these Games, all District 10 tributes died offscreen.
- District 10 is located close by or within Mexico, as seen in the map shown in Catching Fire.
- According to the Capitol.PN, District 10 has a livestock count of 1 million with a population of 19,234, making it the tenth largest district, in terms of population.
- According to the Capitol.PN, District 10 claims 291,963 in tesserae, making it the third most impoverished district.
- If the population is 19,234 and they claim 291,963 tesserae, that would equal to 15.179 tesserae per person, making it the 11th richest District.
- Based on the arena wear for the 74th Hunger Games, the district's color seems to be donkey brown gray (#7d6f67 – ).[16]
