The Vassa River creates a natural border between Scanra and Tortall. Since it is a northern river, the water is freezing throughout the year. It is also has a famed current that is extremely treacherous. It connects with the Smiskir River in Scanra, and feeds into the Brown River which goes directly into Tortall all the way to Bearsford. It also feeds into the Greenwoods River further west, which passes Haven.^[1]

Scanran smugglers did business on the Vassa. Their den was hard to reach, and hidden on the Scanran side of the border, just east of where the Brown River begins. They worked with the Whisper Man, although for a price. He likely knew them when he was the Rogue, as they are criminals. Keladry of Mindelan at first believes that they helped Stenmun Fodeben bring the Haven captives across the river, and asks them about it. They assure her they had nothing to do with that, nor with the transport of killing devices across the Vassa.^[2]
