The Republic can be changed, without joining the Separatists.
—Ultana Annax to other senators

Ultana Annax was a Human female who was, at different times, a senator, a political dissident, and a government official. Hailing from the planet of Deltron in the Inner Rim Territories, she became the world's representative in the Galactic Senate at the age of twenty-two, in 25 BBY. After a year of working as a senator, she noted the bureaucracy and corruption that existed in the Galactic Republic government. As a result, she founded a political clique of senators who sought to change the system, called the Reformists. As the Clone Wars began, her movement grew more influential and larger, and in 21 BBY, seeing as their diplomatic methods were having little results, attempted a coup d'Ă©tat. It failed, and Annax was forced to leave the Senate, and go underground as the movement's leader.

When the conflict ended, Annax and her movement were branded as terrorists by the newly created Galactic Empire. The movement continued minor actions against the Imperial government of Palpatine, though never a full-on insurrection. In 2 BBY, Annax and her advisors merged the movement with the Alliance to Restore the Republic, at the invitation of Bail Organa, who knew her from their Senate days (though he never joined the Reformists as at the time he viewed them to be too radical). She was given an administrative position in the Alliance government, and acted as an advisor to the Alliance's leadership, including Mon Mothma. After the Galactic Civil War ended, Annax held different government posts in the New Republic, and served up until the Yuuzhan Vong War. During the. Inflict, she was killed when the extragalactic invaders attacked Coruscant.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Ultana Annax was born in 47 BBY on Deltron, a planet in the Inner Rim. Her parents were both involved in local politics, with her father being the capitol city's mayor, while her mother was a government minister. Annax's parents planned for her to also become a political figure, and groomed her for this from a young age. By the time she was twelve, Annax decided she would become a senator, and studied political science and galactic relations at the planet's top university. After graduation, she worked for the local government for a couple of years before being sent to Coruscant, the galactic capitol, to study politics at one of Coruscant's finest academies. Shortly after she graduated the institution in 25 BBY, Annax was appointed as her planet's representative in the Galactic Senate. She was one of the youngest members of the Senate, being only twenty-two standard years old.

Joining the Senate[]

Annax's first year in the Senate was marked by learning the darker and dirtier aspects of Republic politics that she did not expect while studying in the universities. These incidents included such as simple ones as various senators taking bribes from corporate sponsors to propose certain laws that would benefit them, to certain government officials ordering hits against their political rivals. This got her quickly disillusioned with the Republic, an institution which she looked up to her entire life as a symbol of stability, peace, and justice. Seeing that the internal workings of the government were often contrary to those ideas, Annax began thinking of doing something to correct the bureaucracy and corruption. During this time, she made alliances with senators and other officials who thought similarly to her.

To not get too noticed to have the more powerful senators try to take her out, Annax purposely denied requests that would have advanced her position, such as postings to various committees. However, at the same time, Annax continued building up her own power base, and not only in government. Early on, she talked to Mavron Ketal, a former Republic special forces officer and mercenary, who agreed to work as her bodyguard, for payments of credits. However, as he learned more about the Republic's darker inner workings, he also became ideologically supportive of Annax's cause. She also talked to others, such as Senate Guards and officers of the Coruscant Security Force. By the middle of 24 BBY, she believed that she was ready for action.

Forming the Reformist Party[]

Around the middle of 24 BBY, Annax announced the creation of the Reformist Party, also called the Reformist faction. The group's main goal was to begin reform in the Republic, and it was willing to go to great lengths to achieve this. However, at first, Annax thought, it would be best to try diplomacy. She also had several other senators in the party, and drew sympathy from more notable politicians, like Bail Organa and Mon Mothma. The Party was not taken seriously for the rest of the year after it's formation, though it did continue growing. Member recruitment was also done throughout Coruscant, and as the economic and political situation in the Republic declined, the Party grew more popular, and Annax was propagandized by the Party as a "people's defender". However, the various pro-Reformist protests drew little attention of those in the government.

Throughout 23 BBY, the Party grew under her leadership, and had offices on other Core Worlds. However, Annax could see that, politically, they had not changed anything. She gave secret orders to Ketal and other military and law enforcement members of the group to start forming a militia, in secret. If diplomacy was not going to work, Annax had other plans in mind. During this time, she formed a leadership council of several other senators and influential members of the Party: Zalin Obrim and Ugan Nemlix, notable senators, Drax Eldon, a Senate Guard lieutenant, Mavron Ketal, mercenary and former special forces operator, Nevik Gendarr, a Republic Navy captain, and Valek Untirrka, a CSF investigator. These individuals became the leadership of the Party, known as the "Revolutionary Command Council". As the party leader, Annax was the Chairman of the Council.

As this occurred, Annax and her Reformists drew more attention from the rest of the Senate. Some called a "radical" and "extremist" (many of them were those who she witnessed doing things like accepting bribes, as she noted), while others saw sense in her organization, such as Organa and Mothma (though neither joined the Reformist movement). However, the Chancellor, Palpatine, largely ignored Annax and her followers. Annax inspected the Party's armed wing, the "Reformist Militia", which was fairly well armed and trained by those members who had combat experience.

Plans set into motion[]

When the Clone Wars began in 22 BBY, Annax knew it was the time to act, and that the time for diplomacy was drawing to a close. She continued being vocal in the Senate, and protested against Palpatine's increasing powers, as well as the formation of the Grand Army of the Republic, but was really preparing for something bigger. During that time, she continued expanding the Party, which was now joined by several disillusioned Jedi who refused to become army commanders. One of them, a Jedi Master named Larynx Bolvin, was appointed by Annax to the Revolutionary Command Council. She continued to have members propagandized into believing that the situation was worse than it really was, and going as far as to beginning conspiracies and rumors amongst the Party members.

Also around this time, Palpatine took notice of the group, and had his agents monitor it. He also informed Count Dooku of it, who took interest in it as well. Palpatine's spies monitored Annax and other leaders of the movement (which officially changed it's name from "party" to "movement", by that point). Annax herself initially did not want to have dealings with the newly formed Confederacy of Independent Systems, in order not to lose members.
