The Koopa Troopa (Japanese: ノコノコ, Noko Noko) is a recurring enemy in the Mario franchise. It is also an enemy in Stage 1 of Adventure Mode.
Origin[]
Koopa Troopas made their debut in Super Mario Bros. as a common enemy, and has become a common enemy in later games of the Mario franchise. Along with the Goombas, the Koopa Troopas are some of the most recognizable enemies of the Mario series. They are anthropomorphic turtle-like creatures that are commonly seen in their green and red variations. The green Koopa Troopas are mostly known for walking in one direction until they are defeated or they fall, while the red Koopa Troopas move back and forth on platforms and turn around at ledges.
If a Koopa Troopa is jumped on, they retreat into their shells rather than be defeated altogether, which can be kicked as projectiles. If the shells are left out for too long, however, the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of its shell. The kicked shells can also pose a danger if they bounce off of a wall.
In Super Mario Bros. 3 and subsequent games of the Super Mario series, if a Koopa Troopa is jumped on and retreats into its shell, it can be picked up, carried around. This, however, can be dangerous, as the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of the shell while carried and can damage the player holding the shell. In Super Mario World and in later games onward, the Koopa Troopas appear walking on two legs instead of four.
In Super Smash Bros.[]
Two Green Koopa Troopas walk back and forth in the background of the Mushroom Kingdom stage. They are 8-bit graphics and have a similar appearance to their sprites from Super Mario All-Stars.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
Koopa Troopas appear as enemies in Mushroom Kingdom, the first stage of Adventure Mode. Here, Koopa Troopas have a behavior of only walking back and forth, and if the player's fighter touches a Koopa Troopa, they will take damage. The fighter can attack a Koopa Troopa to make it retreat into its shell, which they can pick up and use like the Green Shell item. There are also Red Koopa Troopas, which wear a Red Shell, which functions similarly to a regular Green Shell, but with the ability to burn a character. The only difference that Koopa Shells have from their item equivalents is that they do not disappear eventually, and after a while, the Koopa will come back out of its shell and continue moving, even when the player is holding the shell. A Koopa Troopa can defeated by either grabbing and throwing the Koopa Troopa while it is inside of its shell, or by knocking it off of a ledge. At the end of the Mushroom Kingdom stage, the player receives 200 points for each Koopa Troopa they had KO'd, as part of the "Koopa KO" bonus.
Koopa Troopas have a stance of crouching while walking on two legs, a cross between their initial design, where they walk on all fours, and their design introduced in Super Mario World, where they walk upright.
Two 8-bit Green Koopa Troopa cameos in the background of the Mushroom Kingdom stage, similarly to the identically named stage from the previous game.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Both Green and Red Koopa Troopas appear as enemies in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, and they appear in stages where Bowser's minions are present, such as The Jungle and The Lake. They are among the Mario enemies that stole Donkey Kong's banana hoard. In a later cutscene, Bowser orders Koopa Troopas to invade Castle Dedede and take the trophies there.
Unlike their Melee counterparts, a Koopa Troopa does not harm the player character if they walk into a it. Instead, they attack with a leaping headbutt. Once they are stepped on, the shell can be used as an item. Koopa Troopas can emerge from their shells, even while their shell is moving. Due to their tendency to retract their head and limbs into their shells when their health hits zero, Koopa Troopas cannot be send into a Cannonball Effect.
There is a Trophy of both a Green Koopa Troopa and a Red Koopa Troopa, each of which can be obtained by throwing a Trophy Stand at the respective Koopa Troopa in The Subspace Emissary. There is a Sticker of a Koopa Troopa depicting its artwork from Super Mario Strikers.

Description | |||
A henchman of Bowser. In the old days, they'd retreat into their shells for a short while to protect themselves after being stepped on. Recently, however, some have begun to immediately pop back out. You'll often find them marching straight ahead--if the path ends, they'll just march into the abyss. Surely there are no braver turtles to be found. |
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]
Red and green Koopa Troopas appear as enemies in Smash Run, and retain their behavior from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
There is a Trophy of a Green Koopa Troopa and a Red Koopa Troopa each, much like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Green Koopa Troopa trophy is unlocked by getting 20 KOs by knocking foes into other foes in StreetSmash, while the Red Koopa Troopa trophy is unlocked as a random drop.

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]
In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Koopa Troopas may appear in the background of Super Mario Maker, riding a Lakitu cloud. Their appearance changes depending on the game style, matching their designs in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U.
There is a different trophy of a Green Koopa Troopa, although it depicts the Koopa Troopa in the same pose as its Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy. The trophy is a part of the Bowser's Minions Trophy Box.

As a background character[]
8-bit Koopa Troopas reappear on the returning Mushroom Kingdom stage from Super Smash Bros. They have been updated to more accurately match their original sprites from Super Mario Bros. and are now wearing red shells.
As a spirit[]
The green-shelled Koopa Troopa appears as a Novice-level Support Grab Spirit which can be obtained as a random encounter from the Spirit Board or from the Vault Shop. It can also be obtained upon scanning a Koopa Troopa amiibo. The Koopa Troopa spirit occupies one slot, and using it equips the fighter with a Green Shell at the start of a battle. The spirit's core can be used with an Old Man Lobber core and a support core to summon Tortimer's spirit.
Its spirit battle is a regular battle at Golden Plains against Squirtle (whose turtle-like appearance represents the Koopa Troopa's). The stage and music references the Koopa Troopa's appearance in New Super Mario Bros. 2 where the Koopa Troopas will temporarily turn into Gold Koopa Troopas when the player passes through a Gold Ring. Coincidentally, collecting 100 coins on the Golden Plains stage will turn the fighter into a temporary gold form. Also, Green Shells will spawn more often than usual and the Squirtle puppet fighter will also have increased defense after a while, which represents a Koopa Troopa's shell where a Koopa Troopa will retreat into its shell after being stomped on, rather than permanently defeating it.
The Koopa Troopa is also featured in the artwork for the Standard Kart Spirit.
