Bomberman (ボンバーマン, oftentimes referred to as White Bomberman) is the main protagonist of Hudson Soft's Bomberman series, and served as the company's mascot before being bought by Konami.

He joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a summonable Assist Trophy. A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after him is also available as DLC.

Character Description[]

Bomberman in Super Bomberman

Bomberman as he appears in Super Bomberman, alongside other Bombermen.

White Bomberman is the primary representative of the Bomberman people, the dominant inhabitants of Planet Bomber. He is often depicted as a very cheerful, jolly, and goofy character. His friends appreciate him for his bright and upbeat personality, with his extreme friendliness even extending to enemies he's defeated. However, as a sort of antithesis to this personality, Bomberman is capable of being a fierce warrior and does not hold back when fighting.

Like the other Bombermen, he has the ability to create bombs. In his home series, the Bombermen battle by setting bombs which then explode into cross patterns. These can not only attack opponents, but also break barriers and crates which contain powerups. They can also get caught in the blast themselves.

There are many incarnations of him represented in the different games of the series, which do not usually keep a particularly consistent description of the character. In the first game Bomber Man, he is depicted as a regular human wearing overalls and a hat; this was drastically altered for the NES/Famicom port of the game, which gave him his now iconic helmet with antenna and the white and pink limbs. It wouldn't be until Bomberman '94 that retcons his origin into a denizen of Planet Bomber and his species as a Bomberman. Due to his inconsistent depiction in the early years, even his occupations have been swapped around; in Lode Runner, he is shown to be a robot-turned-human who grew tired of making bombs for an empire and, after his transformation, became a Galactic Commando; while in Bomberman '93, he is shown to be a "Bomber Cop", a detective who upholds peace in the galaxy. Nevertheless, in any depiction he's in, he is always tasked with saving his home planet, the galaxy, or even the universe from disaster.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Bomberman is a brand-new Assist Trophy, which means he's here to help you during battle. The bombs he leaves on the stage detonate in his iconic, cross-shaped pattern!

Assist Trophy[]

Bomberman appears as a summonable Assist Trophy. He will roam around the stage and lay down bombs, which then explode into cross patterns (much like his home series and the X Bomb). The type of bombs he can place are a mix of regular bombs, which explode automatically after a few seconds, and Remote Bombs, which Bomberman can detonate on his own at anytime. As multiple bombs can be placed, they can be detonated by another explosion, creating a chain reaction that damage everyone, Bomberman included. The bombs themselves can be attacked, which will move them to another position. Bomberman himself can also be KO'd to earn a point in a Timed match.

Mii Fighter Costume[]

Mii Bomberman

A costume for the Mii Brawler modeled after Bomberman was made available as a part of the Round 7 batch of DLC costumes. Much like the Sans, Cuphead, and Vault Boy costumes, it is fully modeled, with the head acting as a mask. Unlike all the DLC costumes, its color can be changed, referencing the multi-colored Bombermen in battle modes throughout the Bomberman series.

Spirit[]

A Spirit of Bomberman is available in the base game. It is a Primary Grab Spirit under the Ace class. His Spirit Battle uses Toon Link with increased fire and explosion attack power. He is assisted by Bomberman himself and only explosive items will spawn. The stage is the Battlefield Form of Wrecking Crew, as the normal stage is full of bombs itself, and the song that plays is "Bomb Man Stage".

Trivia[]

  • Bomberman's character model, and by extension his Mii Fighter Costume, is directly ripped from Super Bomberman R.
  • As Bomberman is a frequent guest in several other games, Smash marks:
    • The third time he and fellow Konami characters Solid Snake and Simon Belmont have appeared together, following DreamMix TV World Fighters and Super Bomberman R.
    • The first time he and Richter Belmont have appeared together, preceding Super Bomberman R Online.
    • The second time he and Wario have appeared together, following Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman!
    • The second time he and Pac-Man have appeared together, following Pac-Man x Bomberman.
  • Longtime Bomberman artist Shoji Mizuno unfortunately passed the day prior to Bomberman's reveal in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • The Bomberman costume is the only DLC costume that can have its color changed.
