Alucard (アルカード) is the son of Dracula and appears as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Character Description[]

Alucard, born Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes, is the dhampir (half human half vampire) son of Count Vlad Tepes Dracula and the human woman Lisa. Lisa possessed amazing skill with medicine, but the people of Wallachia mistook that for witchcraft and had her burned at the stake. While this sent Dracula into a rage that saw him declare eternal war on humanity, Lisa managed to convince Alucard not to hate humans as they already lived hard lives, and asked him to impart these words to Dracula whilst also professing her eternal love for the vampire lord.

Alucard took these words to heart, taking the name "Alucard" (Dracula spelt backwards) as a sign of his opposing Dracula, and in the year 1476 AD, the events of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, he allied with the vampire hunter Trevor Belmont and his group to defeat him. Afterward, out of guilt for having to fight his own father, Alucard entered a deep slumber until the year 1797, the events of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, wherein Dracula's castle awakened with no Belmont around to counter it. Alucard awakened in order to investigate and destroy the castle, meeting the female warrior Maria Renard along the way. That era's Belmont, Richter Belmont, had gone missing after his victory over Dracula 4 years prior, and Alucard later finds Richter having been brainwashed by the evil priest Shaft to serve as the castle's lord.

Alucard frees Richter from Shaft's hold, and infiltrates a sky-borne alternate castle, finally defeating both Shaft and the reborn Dracula. As Dracula dies, Alucard tells him of Lisa's final request not to hate humans, or at least do no harm to them on top of their already hard lot, as well as saying she would love Dracula forever.

After the battle, Alucard told Richter and Maria of his intentions to purge the world of his own cursed blood, Maria convinced him otherwise.

During the Belmont family's brief dissappearance, other vampire hunters took up the duty of fighting Dracula. While Alucard did not directly involve himself in these battles, he did forge at least one weapon, the Alucard Spear, which he passed down to the Lecarde family. In Castlevania Bloodlines, the spear serves as Eric Lecarde's primary weapon.

When Dracula was seemingly permanently defeated in 1999, Alucard hears of a prophecy fortelling Dracula's potential return in 2035. To prepare for this, Alucard infiltrates a Japanese government agency and takes on the pseudonym "Genya Arikado". As prophesised, the events of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow occur and Dracula's castle rematerializes within an eclipse. Arikado infiltrates the castle and assists Soma Cruz, a student who had been drawn into the castle. When Soma awakens as a reincarnation of Dracula, Arikado helps Soma in overcoming his dark fate. The game's immediate sequel, Dawn of Sorrow, sees Arikado continue helping Soma in his attempt to defeat a group of Dark Lord cultists from electing a new Dark Lord. In one of the game's endings where Soma succumbs to the dark side, Arikado becomes Alucard once more into order to combat his former friend turned lord of darkness.

In the alternate Lords of Shadow continuity, Alucard was formerly that universe's Trevor Belmont, who set out to destroy Dracula, who was originally his father Gabriel. Dracula fatally wounds Trevor but is horrified to learn of their relation, and tries to revive Trevor, even vampirizing him. Some time later, Trevor awakens as Alucard, and assists his own son, that universe's Simon Belmont, in defeating Dracula. When Dracula reawakens eons later in modern times, Alucard re-emerges to assist him in his battle against the reborn Lords.

The sword that Alucard uses in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the Crissaegrim, also known as the Valmanway. The Crissaegrim is a very rare and very strong late game weapon first appearing in Symphony of the Night and can be obtained from the Schmoo enemies in the Reverse Library. The sword slashes four times in a wide forward arc with no lag or recovery time whatsoever between swings allowing Alucard to run whilst repeatedly slashing it. Despite its lower attack stat compared to weapons that can be found after it, the fact that it can land several hits on enemies in very short order when the attack button is mashed, covers a large amount of space in front of Alucard and can be repeatedly swung with no lag or recovery leads it to being one of the game's strongest weapons overall, and even having one Crissaegrim on hand makes the remainder of the game by that point very easy, let alone two. As a result, it is highly coveted and held in high esteem by Symphony fans.

The concept of "Alucard" as a name and character first appeared in the 1943 Universal horror film Son of Dracula, where "Count Alucard" was a pseudonym used by Dracula himself. The idea of "Alucard" as a fake name for Dracula has appeared in other media such as the anime Hellsing, with Castlevania being one of the few properties where Alucard and Dracula are separate characters.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Alucard makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, alongside Simon Belmont and Richter Belmont and other associated Castlevania elements, in his iconic Symphony of the Night design.

Interestingly, the weapon Alucard uses in Ultimate appears to be the Crissaegrim/Valmanway rather than his usual series weapon, the Alucard Sword.

When summoned, Alucard will primarily attack with the Crissaegrim. When an enemy is at range, Alucard will turn into his Bat Form and use his Wing Smash to ram into them. He can also avoid damage by turning into Mist Form, and occasionally performing his famous Backdash.

Alucard makes a cameo appearance in Palutena's Guidance when Pit faces Richter, where the dhampir goes over his history with the vampire hunter, lends Pit advice on how to deal with him and reassures Pit that he's on the side of good.

• Alucard shares same voice actors as Marth from Fire Emblem in English and Zero from Capcom’s Mega Man in Japanese respectively.
• Alucard's other known fighting game appearance was in Castlevania: Judgement where he was playable.
• Athough chronologically centuries old by the time Castlevania: Symphony of the Night takes place, Alucard had never physically aged past 18.
• During his Palutena's Guidance appearance, Alucard's voice has a filter applied that gives it the tinny reverb of the original Symphony of the Night character dialogue.
