“ | How do you do it? Live in this grubby shabby desert, nothing greater than yourselves nothing but dirt when you die... no power, no magic. There is no magic in this universe, nothing but a bag of strings and wolves. You should thank me for what I'm about to do. I need to make an important call, I pray to God it even comes through. This is what I'm reduced to. | ” |
Virgil was an angel who is the Keeper of Heaven's Weapons. Sometime after Michael's imprisonment in Lucifer's Cage and Heaven falling into anarchy, the weapons were stolen by the rogue angel Balthazar. Virgil subsequently allied himself with Raphael and was given the task of tracking down the weapons he had spent an eternity protecting.
Biography[]
Season 6[]
Upon arriving on Earth and taking a vessel, Virgil tracked down Balthazar and confronted him and the Winchesters at Bobby Singer's house where he witnessed the boys being transported into an alternate reality with the "key" to Balthazar's weapons stash.
Virgil followed them into an alternate universe where Sam and Dean were fictional TV characters portrayed by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Virgil ambushed the boys on a sewer stage set and tried to obliterate Dean, only to discover his powers were cut off in this dimension. The Winchesters were then able to overpower and almost beat the angel to death.
He stole the "key" and escaped, however; the nearby studio workers believed he was just another extra. Virgil hid and waited for an opportunity to kidnap someone, which as luck would have it turned out to be Misha Collins; the actor who portrays Raphael's chief opponent, Castiel.
He forced the terrified Misha to drive to an alleyway where he expressed his disgust for humanity and this particular universe before killing Misha and using his blood to commune with Raphael, learning that he needed to return to the spot where he first entered at the same exact time, where upon Raphael will be waiting to pull him back out.
Virgil then visited a gun shop and acquired two Berettas and a shotgun, stating that he was the guardian of Heaven's weapons before knocking out the clerk and shooting a customer, Terminator style.
Armed and dangerous, Virgil returned to the set and shot Supernatural creator Eric Kripke (in the alternate universe) several times in dramatic slow-motion with the shotgun before going on an all-out rampage, killing everyone in sight, including producer Robert Singer, as he made his way towards his point of exit. He was then briefly distracted by Sam, allowing Dean to get the drop on him, and together they beat Vigil into unconsciousness.
The brothers then retrieved the key from Virgil and used his exit strategy to escape the alternate universe and return to the "real" world where Raphael was waiting. The key is revealed to be a decoy as Balthazar explains that he has given all the weapons to Castiel, who in turn threatens to use them to destroy Raphael.
With Raphael now destroyed, Virgil is currently still stuck in the alternate reality and presumably in prison for the murders.
Season 15[]
In Galaxy Brain, God begins destroying all alternate universes and is stated to be almost done by Destiny's Child. As a result, Virgil's current fate is unknown as it is unclear if the alternate universe he was trapped in is still intact.
In Drag Me Away (From You), Billie reveals that God has completed his destruction of the Multiverse. This means Virgil was killed, with the destruction of the other worlds.
Virgil was resurrected by Jack, after he defeated God, as he was restoring everything, like the universe the he's trapped in.[1][2]
Powers and Abilities[]
He was described to be one of Raphael's 'nastiest' warriors, and was heavily implied to be the one who wounded Balthazar in his abdomen. Unfortunately, he lost all of his angelic abilities when he was trapped in Alternate Earth.
- Angelic Possession - He, like all angels, requires a vessel to walk the Earth.
- Immortality - As an angel, Virgil does not grow old and is immune to diseases.
- Super Strength - As an angel, Virgil is physically stronger than humans, monsters, demons, and other angels like Balthazar.
- Super Stamina - He does not need to eat or sleep.
- Telekinesis - He was able to throw Balthazar across a room with ease.
- Teleportation - He could teleport.
- Smiting - Virgil could kill humans and demons with a touch.
- Invulnerability - As an angel, Virgil can't be killed by Earthly conventional weapons, but could only be damaged or banished by angelic weapons.
- Skilled Weapon User - As the weapon keeper of Heaven, Virgil is clearly an exceptional weapon user. Astonishingly for Angels, he is shown to be well-versed in the use of human weapons like firearms and possessed decent knowledge regarding them, selecting the guns he chose to buy based on their capability.
- Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant - Virgil is highly capable at hand-to-hand combat, able to take both Sam and Dean on at once for a time despite their superb fighting skills without his powers, managing to land a single blow on each of the brothers before getting restrained in their first fight and also able to break out of Dean's hold and knock him away with a punch of his own despite having been beaten quite badly and managing to sucker-punch Sam in their second altercation before being ultimately overpowered in his wounded state and beaten to unconsciousness.
Weaknesses[]
- Low Magic - With minimal basic magic in Alternate Earth, Virgil can't tap into his angelic grace, and is thus powerless.
- Archangels - Was subservient to Raphael.
- Higher Primordial Entities - Higher beings like God, The Darkness, and Death are able to effortlessly kill him. Virgil was ultimately killed, during God's destruction of the Multiverse.
Personality[]
Virgil was a ruthless, cunning, and no-nonsense individual who did what he was told without question. He took pride in his lifelong task of guarding and protecting Heaven's weapons and he most likely took Balthazar's stealing of said weapons as a personal offense. His dedication was strong that he personally went after Balthazar and it is implied he had attacked Balthazar, reducing his vessel down to one lung.
When in battle, Virgil was very aggressive, as he threw his own brother Balthazar across a room and fought the Winchesters with brutal attacks.
Like some of his angel brethren, he has no tolerance for humans, as he killed several innocents in a spree to get achieve his goals including Misha Collins, Robert Singer, and Eric Kripke.
Unique for an angel, Virgil possessed a great deal of knowledge about firearms. He was able to select a shotgun and a handgun from a store based on their design and capabilities. He was also an expert in wielding them. When stripped of his powers, he paid no mind and proved himself well-versed at hand-to-hand combat, being able to fight on par with Sam and Dean, two hunters who spent their whole lives training.
Appearances[]
Trivia[]
- Being trapped in the alternate reality probably saved Virgil, as he most likely would have been murdered by Castiel in the Purge of Heaven.
- However, Virgil still died with God's destruction of other worlds in Galaxy Brain and Drag Me Away (From You).
- Virgil is the first angel to be trapped in an alternate universe. The second is Lucifer. And he is the longest character to be trapped in an alternate universe.
