Sous-chef[1] was a title held by some chefs. Sous-chefs were typically ranked below the head chef in whatever kitchen they worked in,[2] and in Cloud City on Bespin, sous-chefs were ranked below Executive Chefs.[1] The Volpai Robbs Ely held the position of sous-chef at Takodana Castle under head chef Strono Tuggs[2] nearly two hundred years before the Battle of Takodana[3] until his murder, at which point Tuggs held a competition, supposedly to choose a replacement but actually to expose Ely's murderer.[2] During the Imperial Era, the Ugnaught chef Gersolik was employed by Baron Administrator Lando Calrissian as a sous-chef in Cloud City, working under Executive Chef Torro Sbazzle.[1]

The title of sous-chef first appeared in the 2016 short story "A Recipe for Death" by Landry Q. Walker, published in the collection Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens: Volume I.[2] It was first spelled with the hyphen in the 2020 short story "But What Does He Eat?" by S.A. Chakraborty, published in the anthology From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back.[1]
