Shogi was a board game played on a shogi board with squares drawn upon it and arrowhead-shaped pieces marked with calligraphic characters. The board and the pieces could be made of wood.[1]
During the time that the former Sith known as the Ronin was a Jedi apprentice, it was common for a Jedi master to use the game when teaching their most apprentices how to manage a battlefield. The Ronin continued to play the game for recreation when he was no longer a Jedi knight, such as playing it with his lover, the witch. The individual who became the Traveler had played it with their master, the Jedi lord Hanrai. The Traveler used the black current of the Force to cheat at the game by moving pieces when their opponent was not paying close attention to the board. Twenty years after the Sith rebellion, the Traveler had a plain wooden shogi board, and the black paint was almost entirely chipped away from a dozen of the pieces.[1]
