Rust storms were a type of weather phenomenon that occurred on the Outer Rim Territories planet Elphrona. They could interfere with communications and hamper travel; while the Blythe homestead was an hour's speeder ride from the town of Ogden's Hope in good weather, the journey would take longer if a rust storm was encountered. When Nihil pirates attacked the homestead to kidnap members of the Blythe family, a large rust storm between the claim and Ogden's Hope was believed by Ronn Blythe to be interfering with transmissions and hampering his attempts to call for help.[1]
