"Not realising that the ideology that had once produced stormtroopers armor was still producing stormtroopers. Chancellor Lanever Villecham resolutely refused to heed the warnings from the likes of General Leia Organa as to what was about to happen."
―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[4]

Lanever Villecham was a Tarsunt male politician who served as the Chancellor of the New Republic. Villecham, a delegate to the Galactic Senate from the Mid Rim planet Tarsunt, was a believer in the peace initiatives that the New Republic carried out after the signing of the Galactic Concordance with the Galactic Empire at the end of the Galactic Civil War.

As such, he focused his term in office on forging agreeable trade relations between the New Republic and the neutral systems in the Trans-Hydian Borderlands, but despite the insistence of General Leia Organa and the Resistance, did not consider the emerging First Order to be a threat. He perished on Hosnian Prime when the planet, then serving as the capital of the Republic, was destroyed by the First Order's Starkiller weapon.

Biography[]

Korr Sella final moments

Chancellor Villecham's last moments before he is killed by the Starkiller Base superweapon.

Lanever Villecham hailed from the Mid Rim planet Tarsunt,[1] serving as a delegate to the Galactic Senate of the New Republic, representing the Tarsunt system.[3] In 32 ABY, during the New Republic Era, Villecham was elected to serve as Chancellor of the New Republic.[5]

By 34 ABY, Villecham was within the second year of his first term in office,[3] and characterised his chancellery by not considering the First Order in the Unknown Regions of being a serious threat,[4] so long they did not expand beyond their borders, as well as adhering to dictates of the Galactic Concordance, a peace treaty marking the Empire's defeat to the Republic at the end of the Galactic Civil War.[3] This stance was in contrast to the claims of General Leia Organa and the paramilitary organisation she founded, the Resistance, whom urged the Republic to consider military action against the First Order rising power. Instead Villecham's principle focuses was on facilitating agreeable trade relations with neutral star systems of the Trans-Hydian Borderlands and ignored the First Order all together.[3]

Organa dispatched an envoy, Commander Korr Sella, to the Republic's then capital of Hosnian Prime—then hosting the New Republic Senate—to argue for a military build-up, however this action was futile[3] since Villecham and Sella were killed, when the First Order targeted Hosnian Prime, along with the Hosnian system with Starkiller Base. The superweapon there firing rays that annihilated the five planets entirely.[6]

The historian Beaumont Kin mentioned him in[4] his[7] book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[4] in 35 ABY.[8] Briefly documenting Villecham chancellery during the rise of the First Order and his refusal to heed the warnings from the likes of General Leia Organa as to what was about to happen.[4]

Personality and traits[]

Lanever Villecham was a Tarsunt male with white hair, black eyes, and yellow skin. He was a believer in the peace initiatives of the New Republic and would not consider a renewed conflict so long as the First Order did not violate the Galactic Concordance,[3] which they ultimately did by destroying Hosnian Prime—costing Villecham his life.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

Lanever Villecham first appeared in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. While he was not identified onscreen, his name was revealed in Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, a 2015 reference book by Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo.[3]
