Haaken Baranar was a free-trader and scout. While on the planet Toola, Baranar was mauled by a snow demon. Baranar was discovered by the Wookiee Spetbecca, who ran the Great Hoary Mastmot Trading Station. While Baranar recovered, Spetbecca was captured by bounty hunters. Baranar took over the running of the trading post when he recovered, keeping it operational in the hope that Spetbecca would one day return.
