Wario (ワリオ?) is a character that appears in the Mario series and also the star of his own franchise. He is Waluigi's partner and the arch-rival of Mario, often serving as an anti-hero or villain in his own right. He amuses himself with gross humor, such as farting and picking his nose. He is recognized as a muscular, rude, reckless, hot-tempered, unintelligent and greedy figure with a gruff Italian accent and an insatiable appetite for garlic.
Wario has appeared in multiple crossover titles alongside Sonic the Hedgehog and his cast, in particular the Mario & Sonic subseries.

In Adventure Tours mode in the Nintendo DS version of the game, Wario appears as one of the unlockable characters who can take part in the mode's sports events. He can be found with Waluigi in Polastraits where the two of them must be beaten in a Bobsleigh event after challenging Sonic and Mario, which they claim to have been waiting for. After that, Wario and Waluigi, both horribly bitter and in denial over their loss, teleport away to prepare for a rematch. The pair will later appear again in Icepeak, where the two of them, now seeking revenge for their previous loss, must be beaten in a Snowboard Cross event. After defeating them both, Wario and Waluigi will join the player's team, albeit only to find opportunities to take the heroes out. They also give the player their Treasure Detector, which can detect nearby Whitestones. After that, Wario will be needed in Blizland, specifically when the player encounters a Chain Chomp who is blocking the way. Here, Wario decides to knock it off the platform. This will initiate the "Blow Away Chain Chomp!" mini-game. Here, Wario has to push the Chain Chomp off the area with the Wario Waft within 45 seconds without falling off the platform himself. Once the Chain Chomp gets knocked off the platform, the player can proceed through the overworld. Wario then continues his adventure with the group, eventually taking on Dr. Eggman and Bowser in Blizland to stop their plan of taking over the Olympic Winter Games.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[]
|
In the Wii version and Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Wario appears as one of the playable characters. In the Wii version, Wario also has the special skill, the Wario Waft, which he can use in certain events to gain speed.
In this game, across both versions, Wario has the following characteristics and icons:
Icon | Skill Type | Stats (Wii) | Class (3DS) | Special Skill | Flag |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Power | Tricksters | Wario Waft |
In the Wii version of the game, Wario also appears as an interactable character in London Party. Here, the player can speak to him in order to play minigames and earn stickers. Also, a Mii costume based on Wario can be unlocked in the game by either winning it through a Scratch Card or paying ten blank cards.
In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Wario belongs to the Tricksters class and can only take part in sports events selected for this class. In the game's story mode, before the Olympics, Wario got the Fog urn from an antique shop that claimed it was magic. Coming to London soon after to earn some money, Wario met Orbot and Cubot outside of Big Ben, who offered to help him claim the title of Superstar from Mario if he competed against Metal Sonic. Claiming he was already a Superhero, Wario declined their offer. Instead, Wario promised to face Metal Sonic if Orbot and Cubot would come work for him if he won. Showing up immediately after, Eggman accepted Wario's terms, but only after he convinced Wario to give him something if Metal Sonic won. After getting beaten by Metal Sonic, Wario lived up to their deal by giving Eggman the Fog urn. Wario initially claimed he brought it from a witch for a high price, but Orbot and Cubot's skepticism made him tell the real story. After that, Wario headed off.
Soon after, a strange fog began covering London. Meanwhile, Wario came to Eton Dorney to set up a snack stand, but he did wish that the fog would clear up as it was driving away his business. He soon after found a Fog Machine though and decided to destroy it in order to make the fog clear up. However, he was stopped by Eggman. Not deterred by Eggman's orders to leave, Wario told Eggman to leave himself. Eventually, they decided to settle their dispute with some Olympic events. After Wario won, Eggman permitted him to try and destroy the Fog Machine. When Wario attempted however, he discovered the Fog Machine was just a hologram. As Eggman then ran off, Wario ignored Mario and Toad's concerns and followed Eggman. Running into Waluigi along the way, who was after Metal Sonic, the two of them decided to team up and help each other catch their target when each of them offered the other a reward for their aid. They were then approached by Eggman and Metal Sonic, whom Wario challenged to some events. After Wario and Waluigi beat the two villains, the two of them called off their deals. Wario then found the real Fog Machine and destroyed it, thus clearing Eton Dorney of the fog. Nearby, Mario, Luigi, Toad and Charmy congratulated the pair. Wario and Waluigi were then left to watch Eggman and Metal Sonic, whom they planned to get compensation from. However, Wario and Waluigi soon discovered that the Eggman they were watching was really a hologram when it faded away. Not long after, the fog returned, except now more intense, to London. In response, Wario and Waluigi cleared Eton Dorney of the fog, which pair later reported back to Sonic and Mario about to support them during their showdown with Eggman and Bowser (and so they could get Eggman to pay up), who were behind the fog. After everything had been resolved, Wario came to the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games.
In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, a badge of Wario can also be obtained from the badge machine.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[]
In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Wario is a playable character in both the Nintendo Switch and arcade version of the game.
In the Nintendo Switch version of the game, Wario plays a role in the story mode. In this mode, he and Waluigi were preparing to win the gold in the Canoeing event when Tails and Luigi showed to compete for the gold in that event. Despite taunting the duo by saying that they were not better than themselves, Wario and Waluigi lost to Tails and Luigi in the event. As Wario and Waluigi began blaming each other for their loss, Luigi intervened and insisted that they needed gold medals. Wario was then convinced by Waluigi to pretend to help Tails and Luigi get gold medals, which they could then steal later. Wario thus joined Tails and Luigi's party with Waluigi. When the party later needed to charge the Excitement Battery using cheers from the audience, Wario would step up to compete against Diddy Kong in Rugby Sevens to get his own gold medal. In the end, Wario's team won, and the Excitement Battery got charged up a little from the cheers created.
In the Nintendo Switch version of the game, Wario is only playable in the 2020 events and has the following characteristics:

Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
- See also: Wario (SSBB)
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wario makes his first appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series as a playable fighter. In this game, Wario is a starter character, making him available from the beginning. Notably, Wario's standard attire in this title consists of his outfit from the WarioWare series. For regular battles however, Wario has a full alternate costume in the form of his standard outfit. In addition, Mario has a palette swap in this game that makes his clothes look like Wario's.
In gameplay, Wario is a small-framed and heavyweight character, with the majority of his moveset drawing inspiration from WarioWare. His techniques and movements are presented in a choppy, frame-by-frame nature, causing Wario's movements to be very erratic in nature. In contrast to what his weight might imply however, he possesses a great air game that includes great aerial mobility, high air speed, and strong aerial attacks. This enables him to survive longer than others in his weight class without leaving him as vulnerable to combos like other heavyweights and both traverse the air and approach opponents more efficiently. Also, if the conditions are right, he possesses a great recovery game too which is complemented by amazing vertical distance recovery options. He likewise possesses effective approach options thanks to his air speed and effective finishers. These attributes together makes Wario a very defensive character who is difficult to KO. However, Wario also has his shortcomings: he has problems when trying to break free from grabs without being sent flying and his air release maneuver sends his upward vertically (unlike other fighters) and leaves him vulnerable to both certain aerial attacks and long-ranged ground attacks. As such, most characters in the game can grab-release-combo Wario into a series of aerial attacks or even KOs. The range of Wario's attacks are as well below average, which makes him vulnerable to opponents with high attack range, and his recovery is among the most in the game if several factors are not included in its execution. Regardless, Wario has very good matchups against most of the game's cast, possessing only four disadvantageous matchups and three counters.
In the Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, Wario is one of the many characters from the World of Trophies that got caught up in the schemes of Tabuu and his minions. Although Wario initially worked with Tabuu's forces, he soon changed sides and worked together with the other fighters to defeat Tabuu.
Wario also appears in the game as a Trophy and several Stickers:

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[]
- See also: Wario (SSB3DS/WU)
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Wario made his second appearance as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series. In both versions of this game, Wario must be unlocked by completing any one of following objectives for the respective games:
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U:
- Play 20 VS Matches. Wario must then be defeated on Gamer.
- Clear 100-Man Smash. Wario must then be defeated on Gamer
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS:
- Clear 100-Man Smash. Wario must then be defeated on WarioWare, Inc.
- Play 30 VS Matches. Wario must then be defeated on WarioWare, Inc.
Like in the previous Super Smash Bros. title, Wario's standard clothes in this game consists of his outfit from the WarioWare series, but he also possesses a palette swap that has him wearing his regular clothes. In addition, Mario has a palette swap in this game that makes his clothes look like Wario's.
In this game, Wario is once again a short, heavyweight character, and his moveset remains relatively unchanged. His animation is also far more fluid. In terms of combat potential though, his performance is less impressive than it was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wario has notably good aerial mobility despite being among the game's heavyweights, along with good aerial attacks and similarly powerful ground attacks. He also has great setups with the majority of his aerial attacks and his Wario Bike special move, as well as his aerials techniques, have low ending lag when performed and can be used when he needs to perform a KO. In addition, Wario's forward and up smashes have received an increase in damage output and knockback, his Forward throw has more KO potential, his Wario Waft has been given more knockback power at maximum charge, and his Wario Bike has now more utility and is safer to perform than before, thereby giving Wario a safer overall playstyle. His up special maneuver, the Corkscrew, has also been extended in distance and gives Wario better opportunities for grabbing onto ledges (along with his double jump), thereby giving Wario less moves to use when he has to get back on the battle stages. These improvements together give Wario a very effective recovery game. However, many of Wario's flaws still remain and have become even more significant in this title. His empowered smash attacks, for example, have been given more startup and ending lag while also lacking the transcendent priority and armor of his old forward smash. His options for KOs have also been lessened in said regards. As a result, Wario's KO potential in general is very problematic, especially for his weight class. Wario's attack range is also less-than-noteworthy due him having no proper projectile attack and disjointed hitboxes. This once again makes him vulnerable to fighters that rely on long-ranged attacks while also opposing camping against certain fighters. In addition, Wario has no great options when it comes to opposing camping strategies, which further compounds this weakness, and his air acceleration has been lessen slightly. The removal of certain gameplay mechanics also hinder Wario's combat potential.
Each version of the game also comes with their own Trophies of Wario:

Wario + Bruiser | Wario + Growlster | Series Related | For most racers the finish line is the goal, but if you combine Wario with this bad boy, the game takes on a whole new meaning. And that meaning is to crash into everyone else. Behind the wheel of the Bruiser, Wario turns Mario Kart into a contact sport. | Even in a race for first place, it's possible to sort of ignore the whole winning thing and just focus on bashing into the other racers instead. Wario's that kind of guy, so obviously he'd choose a frame like the Growlster and use it to ram other drivers off the road. It's like he thinks Mario Kart is a combat sport or something! | Random |
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
- See also: Wario (SSBU)
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Wario made his third appearance as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series. In this game, Wario must be unlocked by completing any one of following objectives:
- Play VS. matches, with Wario being the 24th character to be unlocked. Wario must then be defeated on WarioWare, Inc.
- Clear Classic Mode with Samus or any character in her unlock tree, being the 7th character unlocked after Cloud. Wario must then be defeated on WarioWare, Inc.
- Have Wario join the player's party in World of Light.
Once again, Wario's standard attire in this title consists of his outfit from the WarioWare series. However, he also has a palette swap that has him wearing his regular outfit. In addition, for the first time in the Super Smash Bros. series, Mario does not have a palette swap in this game that makes his clothes look like Wario's.
In gameplay, Wario appears once more as a short, heavyweight character. His moveset in this game is seemingly based on his moveset from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, albeit with some minor alterations; his dash attack is now his main attack from the Wario Land series instead of a dive, and his side tilt has been changed from a straight punch to a backhand slap. Also, when performing his Final Smash, Wario (like he always do) assumes the form of Wario-Man, but instead of fighting as him, Wario dashes into his opponents, traps them, and lands a barrage of punches before sending them flying with his Wario Waft technique. In addition, Wario gains benefits from changes to the gameplay mechanics; his mobility has increased in speed; the time of his short hop has been reduced; his aerial moves have less landing lag; his recovery has been extended thanks to the reimplementation of previous games' directional air dodges; and his offensive play has been extended thanks to more attack options having been implemented. Wario's forward tilt maneuver also deals more noteworthy damage, although his up tilt attack and down throw move now deal less damage. In return, Wario's dash attack, forward and up smashes, and up throw techniques have all received an overall increase in damage output.
In the Adventure Mode of the game, "World of Light", Wario was one of the many fighters (aside from Kirby, who had managed to escape) who got captured by Galeem so that he could clone them and create puppet fighters for evil spirits to control. Wario was later one of the many fighters that fell under Dharkon's control upon Galeem's first defeat. During the Adventure Mode, several puppet fighters of Wario are used for spirit battles. An evil version of Wario can be fought and defeated so that the true Wario can be awoken and join the fight to defeat Galeem and Dharkon.
In this game, Wario also appears as a few Fighter Spirits with the following characteristics:
