Snottingham Castle,[1] sometimes referred to as Lord Hood's Fortress,[2] is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It was the former home of the royal family of Mercia, and later became the headquarters of the Mercia Dark Egg Legion under Mordred Hood's command.

Description[]

Snottingham castle diagram

A diagram of Snottingham Castle, from Sonic Universe #46.

The fortress appears as a mostly gray and red castle with several wooden tents surrounding the area. A moat surrounds the fortress, preventing anyone from entering it by any means except via the drawbridge. An insignia of Eggman is on the main tower of the castle. Following Lord Mordred Hood's takeover, an outer wall surrounding Snottingham Castle was added.

History[]

Past[]

Originally the home of the Mercian royal family, Snottingham castle was taken over by Armand D'Coolette after he was Roboticized and became the High Sheriff. Most of the citizens of Snottingham were then roboticized by the High Sheriff, with the exception of Rob o' the Hedge, who managed to escape, and would plan to eventually retake Snottingham Castle.

Friendly Rogues and Foul Villains[]

During the latest Day of Fury, Sonic and Tails' plane, the Winged Victory, was struck down by a bolt of lightning, and was forced to land in Deerwood Forest. Mistaking Sonic for Rob, the robians captured them and locked them up in Snottingham Castle's prison. Shortly after, Yanar, a member of the Lost Tribe of Echidnas was also captured, imprisoned in the castle, and (along with Tails) brought before the High Sheriff, but not before he managed to steal the keys to the shackles, tossing them to Sonic, who escaped in search of Tails. Sonic found and rescued Tails, and after a brief duel with the high sheriff, made the acquaintance of Rob and Knuckles the Echidna and joined them in saving Yanar from execution. While the others escaped, Rob found the explosives storage and used it to blow up a large portion of the castle before escaping himself.[3][4][5]

Usage by the Dark Egg Legion[]

Some time later, Snottingham castle was repaired, given a new outer wall, and taken over by Eggman's new Mercian Grandmaster, Lord Mordred Hood. Under Mordred's reign, the castle became the prison of many of Mercia's citizens who lived out in the open rather than taking refuge in Deerwood Forest. Lord Hood was also summoned from here to a meeting of the Grandmasters aboard the Death Egg Mark 2.[1]

After the Chaotix (Vector, Espio and Charmy) met the Mercian Freedom Fighters (Bow Sparrow, Thorn the Lop, Alan Quail, Munch Rat, and Friar Buck), the two groups assembled a plan to rescue Mercian villagers and the Chaotix's friends, Mighty and Ray, if they were captured while trying to find Mighty's sister, from the fortress. And so, the Chaotix and Mercian Freedom Fighters snuck inside the fortress. However, a minion had told Lord Mordred Hood about the Freedom Fighters entering the castle. Hood, who at the time was hypnotizing a Mercian villager about where the Deerwood Forest Hideaway is located, told the minion not to attack them but to wait for them to enter the dungeon, where they will meet their fate.[2]

Having reached the sewers under Snottingham Castle, the heroes split up, with the Chaotix going off in search of the computer room, and the Mercian Freedom Fighters heading to the prisons to rescue their captured comrades. Despite a trap being activated and several iron gates springing up, Charmy managed to lower them, slipping through the bars and flipping the manual shutoff switch. Realizing it was too dangerous, Espio had Vector hand Bow his Warp Ring so they could free the prisoners while he and the rest of the Chaotix found the computer room. Sneaking into the main castle through a drain, Espio and Vector took out the guards and advanced to the computer room, much to Hood's annoyance. Having found what they needed to know on Mighty and Ray's whereabouts, the Chaotix rejoined with the others, who were in the prison under attack from Mordred and his legionaries. After a failed attempt to steal the Warp Ring, Hood was defeated by Vectpr, while Espio knocked out the guards and opened the inner gate. Once they were through, Bow shot an arrow at the gate lever, closing it. With Hood behind them, and several G.O.O.Ns guarding the outer gate in front of them, Espio used the Warp Ring, creating a portal to Hideaway, through which they all escaped, closing it just before Hood could reach it.[6]
