The Sewer Warp,[1] also known as the Rapid Transport[1] and transporter[2] (ワープゾーン[3] Wāpuzōn?, lit. "Warp Zone"), is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of transport devices set on the background walls in certain levels, which can transport the player from one section to another.

Description[]

The Sewer Warps are basically hatches on the walls. For each level, the Sewer Warps' design and appearance will match that of the surrounding environment, possessing different shapes and types of hatches.

In gameplay, when the player gets in front of a Sewer Warp, it will open and pull the user inside of it before closing. Sonic is then transported to another Sewer Pipe in another section of the level, where it opens up and deposits him in that location. Regardless of their usefulness though, it is only certain Sewer Pipes that can transport the character; those Sewer Pipes that serve to deposit the player when using a useable Sewer Pipe cannot be used for transport. If the player tried to use them, they will just drop their character back into the arena.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Spinball[]

In the 16-bit version of Sonic Spinball, Sewer Warps appear in Toxic Caves, Lava Powerhouse and The Machine (where they are titled as Rapid Transports).

In gameplay, several Sewer Warps only function if the player has activated certain targets close by though. In The Machine, many Sewer Warps are located inside high-speed warp tubes. Also, besides helping the player, the Sewer Pipes also serve another role; in the steam areas of Lava Powerhouse, numerous Cluckbirds emerge from Sewer Warps and fly around the section.

In the 8-bit version, the Sewer Warps appear in Toxic Pools, Lava Powerhouse and The Machine. In gameplay, besides helping the player, the Sewer Pipes also serve another role; in the steam areas of Lava Powerhouse, numerous Cluckbirds emerge from Sewer Warps and fly around the section.

Sonic Blast[]

In Sonic Blast, similar gimmicks appear with the name of transporters[2] (ワープゾーン[3] Wāpuzōn?, lit. "Warp Zone"). In this game, they are hatches on walls with a white frame and a red color in the center.

In gameplay, the transporters only appear in Silver Castle Zone. Here, most transporters appear connected to one another. When the playable character approaches a transporter they can use, it will open its hatch automatically. Should the player enter it, they will get sent to another transporter. Most of the time, only one transporter of the pair will be usable by the playable character, while a few will be connected to a common transporter. Silver Castle Zone Act 1 makes overwhelming use of transporters, making exploration very difficult and confusing.

Trivia[]

  • In The Machine, depending how much the player has progressed in the level and how many Chaos Emeralds there has been collected, after losing a life, the Sewer Warp on the center ceiling of the lower pinball arena will transport the player to certain section where the player can continue without needing to reach to the section separately.
  • In Sonic Advance, there are void-type obstacles in Casino Paradise Zone akin to the Sewer Warps, which can transport the player to another section.
