Sonic will automatically grab ledges and flip up onto a safe surface to prevent fatal falls or avoid the jaws of Robotnik's monsters.

— Description, Sonic Spinball (16-bit)[1]

The Cliffhanger Flip[1] is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It consists on the user flipping back onto solid ground when hanging from a ledge.

Description[]

When performing the Cliffhanger Flip, the user grabs the ledge of the nearest surface and flip up onto it.

In the 16-bit version of Sonic Spinball, the Cliffhanger Flip is only used by Sonic the Hedgehog. In gameplay, the Cliffhanger Flip will automatically be performed when Sonic gets close to the ledge of a surface, at which point he will automatically grab into the ledge. If this happens, he then will flip up onto that surface by himself without input from the player. This move is useful when having to avoid falls into fatal traps or reach ledges out of reach. However, the Cliffhanger Flip can only be performed on flat surfaces, and cannot be performed on unevenly aligned surfaces, such as those on Flippers, as Sonic cannot grab ahold of these ledges. In addition, if ledge Sonic grabs onto happens to be a part of a moving platform, such as those in The Machine, then said platform will halt its movements while the Cliffhanger Flip is executed.
