Pudding's Guitar (プリンのギター Purin no Gitā?) is a guitar frequently used by Pudding in Sega's Space Channel 5 series. Initially used by the reporter to humiliate Ulala on-air, it has since evolved into Pudding's personalized weapon of choice. The item itself is also directly related to Pudding's theme song, "Guitar Showdown".

Concept and creation[]

Pudding's Guitar was originally conceived for the 2002 video game, Space Channel 5: Part 2. It was created specifically for Pudding during a "boss" encounter within the game, and later a playable accessory by Pudding herself. As revealed by Mineko Okamura of United Game Artists, it is likely that the design of Pudding's Guitar was based off one from Michael Jackson's collection, who also cameoed as himself in the series.

The guitar continued to make appearances within the Space Channel 5 series itself after its debut. When Sumo Digital acquired the rights to the Sega All-Stars series and certain Sega franchises, the guitar itself officially became one of Pudding's primary weapons, first noticed in Sega Superstars Tennis.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Pudding All-Star Move Activated

The guitar, as it appears in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (PC).

Pudding's Guitar resembles something similar to that of a Jackson Rhoads, a common type of electric guitar. The initial color scheme of the guitar has it shown to be mostly purple and white, with the colors complimenting them being cyan and pink. At the bottom of the instrument, there are two small, white hearts.

In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the colors of the guitar are much softer and the guitar itself has a glow to it, mainly due to it's newly-acquired abilities.

Features and traits[]

The guitar is initially used as a prop by Pudding for her show. At one point, it is revealed that Pudding may not actually know how to play the guitar in general, although this is denied in Sega Superstars Tennis.

The guitar is first used as a "source of energy and defense" in Sega Superstars Tennis. By playing the guitar, Pudding is able to grant herself enough "courage" to verse against her opponents on the court, allowing for an effective Superstar State. With these apparent attributes, the guitar itself allows Pudding to hit the tennis ball in a zig-zag-like pattern and has a small chance to "cancel" out opponent's active Superstar States.

In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Pudding's Guitar acts as a defensive weapon, similarly to that of a Hod Rod. Once Pudding has activated her All-Star Move, she is able to reveal her guitar and blast other racers off the road. The shockwave from the guitar itself has enough energy and power to electrify the racers, causing them to undergo severe electric shock, making their skeletons visible to the naked eye.

Game appearances[]

Sega Superstars Tennis[]

Pudding's Guitar makes its debut in the Sega All-Stars series in Sega Superstars Tennis. When Pudding's Superstar Meter becomes full, it grants the reporter enough "courage" to perform a guitar solo, striking the instrument to the beats of "Asteroid Belt: Go! Go! "Astrobeat Jr."". Once the cutscene ends, Pudding is given a handful of seconds to perform her moves on the opponent(s).

Sonic Unleashed[]

In the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed, Pudding's Guitar makes a brief cameo during the Act 1 (Daytime) mission in Empire City. The guitar can be seen on a billboard advertisement in the distance after a curved road, captioned "The Rockin' Show...!".

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing[]

The guitar makes a minor cameo appearance in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing in the background of one of the unlockable achievements.

Dreamcast Collection[]

Pudding's Guitar appears in the Space Channel 5: Part 2 selectable game of the game compilation, Dreamcast Collection. The guitar also appears on some of the exclusive box artwork for the game.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed[]

In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the guitar appears as Pudding's personalized and upgraded weapon. In the game, it appears exclusively during Pudding's All-Star Move, where it can be used to blast racers off-track, behaving similarly to that of a Hot Rod, but with a much larger circumference. Because of this, Pudding's Guitar is able to successfully hit, or attack, nearby racers more easily. During the All-Star Move, the guitar's signature song "Guitar Showdown" plays in the background, and will bounce to the rhythm of the theme.

Trivia[]

  • Pudding's Guitar makes more appearances in other Sega franchises than the Space Channel 5 series itself, of which it originated from.
  • The guitar first became known as a weapon in Sega Superstars Tennis.
  • In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the guitar has an illuminating glow.
  • Pudding's Guitar does not appear in the iOS or Android versions of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
  • The billboard for the guitar in the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed is replaced by food advertisements in all other versions. The reasoning behind the change, or the guitars minor cameo, is unknown.
    • The caption "The Rockin Show...!" is a direct nod to the name of Pudding's TV show, titled Pudding's Rockin' Show.
  • The guitar loses most of its cyan coloring in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
    • This is primarily due to the addition of the illuminating pink glow around the guitar itself.
  • The way the guitar bounces over Pudding in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a reference to Pudding's idling position (with the guitar) in Space Channel 5: Part 2.
    • The guitar is also in rhythm to the theme song "Guitar Showdown".
  • The 3D model for Pudding's Guitar in Sega Superstars Tennis is the same one used in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
