Is that courage at last? No, I think it's just anger and shame!

— Inigo Cortez, Sonic Universe #95

Inigo Cortez[1] is a character that was set to appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a mobian badger[2] serving under Lord Mordred Hood[1] who was originally set to appear in Sonic Universe #95, but due to the issue's cancellation, he never appeared.

Appearance[]

Inigo Cortez is a light blue mobian badger with black markings on the fur of his ears, tail tip, and around his eyes, topped with white chest hair and snout. He possesses a lengthy purple, gold, and black-colored sword that he carries with a gray-colored gauntlet adorned on his left hand. On his right hand, he wears a white glove, with a purple interior lining. Cortez wears a brown strap and belt, held together with a yellow buckle and button. The strap is supported by a gray-colored shoulder pad. He wears purple-colored boots.

History[]

Past[]

At some point in the past, Inigo Cortez allied himself with the Eurish Egg Army, and began a search for the seven legendary Sacred swords, believing that once he found them, the "truly worthy ruler of Avalon" would be brought to power. Eventually, Cortez located one sword, and invaded Castle D'Coolette in the hopes of finding the second sword, which the D'Coolette family had been rumored to possess. Although Cortez intended to interrogate Bow Sparrow and his Woodland Kingsmen for the exact location of the sword, the group fled before Cortez arrived, forcing him to personally ransack the castle in search of the weapon.[1]

Cortez was unable to locate the sword, however, and with no other leads on its location, he waited in the castle for Antoine to return. While waiting, Cortez took the opportunity to vandalize the castle in a mocking gesture towards the D'Coolette lineage.[1]

Birthright[]

Once Antoine and Sonic arrived at the castle, Cortez made himself known to the duo, mocking the former for his "cowardice" and fear. This provoked Sonic and Antoine to attack Cortez, but the badger quickly gained the upper hand in the brawl due to his master swordsmanship skills coupled with the magical power of his Sacred sword. However, the situation took a turn when Cortez arrogantly used a magical blast from his sword to send Antoine crashing through the floor, and into a chamber below containing the second hidden Sacred sword. Not knowing of this, Cortez paid no attention to Antoine, considering him a "weakling", and seeing a far more worthy challenge in Sonic. However, once Antoine returned to the battle wielding the Sacred sword, Cortez quickly lost his advantage, and was handily subdued in roughly five minutes by the coyote, who had unlocked the true power of his sword through being deemed "worthy" by it.[1]

Despite Cortez being at his mercy, Antoine allowed him to leave the castle, instructing him to run back to his master Lord Mordred Hood and tell of his defeat at the hands of the Sacred sword he was unable to find. Cortez took advantage of Antoine's mercy, and left the premises, but not before smugly claiming that he would find the remaining swords before Antoine.[1]

Personality[]

Cortez is overall a smug and condescending figure, keeping a constant mocking attitude towards his enemies seemingly for the sole purpose of intimidating them. Despite this, his is rarely prone to showing fear or surprise, especially when confronted with immense power that causes him to lose the upper hand. Cortez also seems to genuinely enjoy combat, expressing interest at "worthy challenges" against powerful opponents.[1]

While loyal to Lord Mordred Hood and the Eurish Egg Army, the specifics of his loyalty are unknown. In addition, Cortez alludes to wishing to bring the "worthy" ruler of Avalon to the throne, but is unknown if the statement refers to himself, Mordred Hood, or another individual.[1]

Powers and abilities[]

Cortex possesses impressive reflexes, able to block a Homing Attack from Sonic using his sword. Cortez also has swordfighting skills that rival Antoine's.[1]

Weapons[]

Cortez possesses one of the seven Sacred swords, which can charge itself with energy to increase its power. Cortez's sword can withstand hits from both Sonic's Homing Attack and Antoine's original sword, with Antoine’s sword breaking when it struck Cortez's sword.[1]

Relationships[]

Antoine D'Coolette[]

But you? You are sad little man from a sad little family.

— Inigo Cortez, Sonic Universe #95

Inigo Cortez originally saw Antoine as nothing more than a gullible joke who relied on help from Sonic to win battles. However, after Antoine beat him in battle using the unlocked power of the sacred sword, Cortez seemingly gained more respect for him, considering him a worthy opponent, despite still acting towards him in a mocking fashion.[1]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

A duel with Sonic...It's been worth the wait!

— Inigo Cortez, Sonic Universe #95

Cortez is well aware of Sonic's reputation as a heroic figure, and as such sees him as a suitable challenge for his swordplay skills. Although lacking any personal animosity towards Sonic, Cortez ultimately deems him an obstacle towards achieving his goals.[1]
