Summary[]
It's Smurfs Fools Day in the village as Jokey is ready to give his comedy induced pranks to the other Smurfs. He also states sometimes, you have to stick to the classics as he picks out a box that's just right for the occasion.
Brainy has the honor of being the first Smurf to get pranked by Jokey. To his surprise, however, as he gives him a present, Brainy gives one back - a book that explodes when he first opens it. Brainy laughs and hovers away via the smurfway. Jokey does not like this and says he's the one who does the jokes around here. Just then, Jokey comes across Harmony playing music. He presents him with a gift. Harmony then presents one back, which are two symbols hurting his face and leaving him dizzy.
Jokey decides to take his jokes elsewhere, as other the Smurfs hop on the joking trend, including Baby, who launches a dirty diaper to Grouchy's hat. Meanwhile, Hefty presents Smurfette with a gift, but as it opens, Smurfette kicks it away and it hits Jokey as the two laughs at him.
Jokey is beginning to get annoyed at the Smurfs on his turf when he approaches Greedy, but when he offers him a gift, Greedy says he's late for Chef's surprise meal. Just then, Clumsy and Dimwitty arrive to give Jokey a hose in the box prank. The two firefighters dance for their accomplishment while Jokey is upset they stole his prank.
Upset, Jokey walks away from the village, where he meets Papa Smurf, who is happy at the idea of Smurfs Fools Day since it gives the other Smurfs something to do while he's in his lab.
As Jokey contemplates what he's going to do, he kicks a rock, which accidentally hits Leaf while the fairy is treating a bear with a cavity. As she successfully pulls it out, she greets Jokey. Jokey reminds her that it's Smurfs Fools Day, but he explains the other Smurfs are taking his jokes and using them against him. Leaf believes it's because they love what he does, but Jokey tells her they don't and nobody likes his gifts anymore. Leaf recommends for him to "revamp" his boxes. Jokey protests, saying the classics work best, so Leaf says why not show them why the classics are so special.
Unfortunately, Gargamel overhears the conversation and tells Azrael they'll give them a prank they'll never forget as he cackles.
Meanwhile, Chef serves his surprise meal, which involves opening a box and treats come out flying, which the Smurfs enjoy as they stuff it in their mouths. Elsewhere, Handy gives Dimwitty a present, which is a flying rocket that makes him fall into a barrel. Dimwitty says Jokey would really like this prank, but Smurfette notices that Jokey is gone. Lazy informs them that he went into the forest a while ago, presumably to prepare a new box. The Smurfs go to find him, since it's his day.
Jokey is confused at the idea of Leaf saying he should "revamp" his boxes but suddenly, he comes across a yellow glittery box. He assumes it's Painter's and doesn't want to fall for another prank like this.
Meanwhile, Handy, Dimwitty, and Vanity are searching for Jokey, with Dimwitty confused on who they are searching for and Vanity saying this is good for his complexion. However, the three Smurfs decide to split up because there are two paths.
Each Smurf splitting up see that there's a yellow glittery box, but suddenly, they are all trapped in a box. The other Smurfs that searched for Jokey get trapped in the magic box too, and it's revealed that Gargamel created them as the evil wizard cackles. However, Azrael accidentally traps himself in one and follows Gargamel back to the hovel.
In the village, Jokey tries to present a gift for a Smurf, but can't find anyone. The only one in it is Papa Smurf, who gifts him by dumping water on Jokey's head on the door. Jokey is annoyed and brushes this off, explaining that there's a sparkly box in the forest and the Smurfs are missing. Papa Smurf is confused.
Papa Smurf and Jokey go into the forest, where the magic box is, but Papa Smurf thinks it's a joke being played by his little Smurfs. Just then, Gargamel captures Papa Smurf in the box and goes back into his hovel, leaving Jokey as the only free Smurf.
Jokey goes to Gargamel's hovel, where the evil wizard has taken his friends hostage, but Papa Smurf sees Jokey miming through the window. Though he has approximately 99 Smurfs, Brainy says one is missing to make 100 for the Philosopher's Stone. Gargamel detests this and counts the Smurfs, but Azrael makes it hard to count with his excrescent meowing due to trapping himself in the magic box, making Gargamel throw him to the wall. Just then, he hears a knock on the door. When he opens it, he sees a gigantic box which he assumes is 50 more Smurfs. However, it's a bunch of fireworks, causing Gargamel and Azrael (who has successfully escaped from the box) to be sent flying.
The Smurfs congratulate Jokey for being a prank artist and he sets them free. As the Smurfs escape the hovel, Papa Smurf tells him everyone had fun today, but Jokey jokes that not everyone did and there can be only one Jokey.
Trivia[]
- The holiday of "Smurfs Fools Day" is the equivalent of April Fool's Day, though in the 1980s cartoon show, it went under the name of "April Smurf's Day" in the episode of the same name.
- Harmony's gift consists of two symbols smashing Jokey's face. Lazy's portable alarm used two symbols to do the exact same thing in "DRIIINNGGGGG!".
- When Handy gives Dimwitty a rocket, he is blown through the air while holding it. This is recycled footage from "Joke's On You", though the Smurf that was getting blown in the air was a generic Smurf.
- The ending is very similar to "Forget Me What?" and "Cover Story" as the ending has Jokey (in place of Reporter) and Papa Smurf (like in "Cover Story") as the latter nudges the former.
