Elemental Gates are area obstacles in the Skylanders franchise. They mainly act as entrances to secret areas, challenges and collectibles within levels. To open a gate, the player must have a Skylander (or a Trap Master in the console and tablet versions of Skylanders: Trap Team) matching the Element of the gate. Approach it, and the gate of the respective element will disappear, allowing entry into the elemental zone.
Elemental Gates appear in each level of Spyro's Adventure, Giants, Swap Force and Trap Team, sometimes hidden. There are some exceptions, such as The Oracle, as well as certain levels dedicated solely to battle/survival arenas and boss fights. Additionally, Swap Force features Dual-Elemental Gates, requiring either 2 Skylanders or SWAP Force combination with both elements.
In SuperChargers, there is only one Elemental Gate, located in the hub outside the Skylanders Academy. It is possible to reload the area to change the Element. The gate leads to one of ten Vehicle Zones. Any Skylander can access them as long as the element of the Vehicle matches the gate. These Gates contain timed challenges, and cannot be explored freely. In a later update, the gates were added to specific parts of regular chapters, but their Zones act the same.
In SuperChargers Racing, each of the five story mode Tours features two Elemental Gates. Like in the main game, they are unlocked with a Vehicle of the matching Element. However, the elements of the gates are fixed, like in earlier games. Each of the ten Elements has a single gate, behind which is a race, followed by a mod chest upon completion.
In Imaginators, the gates were replaced by whole Sensei Elemental Realms, without utilizing any existing designs and simply having an emblem of the symbol blocking the entrance.
Appearance
In Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, the elemental gates appear as ancient, thin arches with spherical blockades at the center that has an elemental symbol. In Skylanders: Giants, the Elemental Gates appear as walls with an elemental trapping that matches the element they are restricted to; for example, a Life element gate will be blocked off by vines sprouting from the ground. An icon of the correct element will also appear on the ground next to the gate. The obstruction will retreat when the correct Element Skylander reaches the gate.
In Skylanders: Swap Force, the gates have been redesigned to appear as artificially made gates that have the element symbol on them on a circle wall propped up by two pillars to the left and right side of the wall. Dual-Elemental Gates will have one element appear on the left half of the circular wall and the other on the right half. When activated, the gates will have the element appear to "grow" on the sides of the gate until it fully opens.

Trivia
- In Perilous Pastures, there is a place that can only be accessed by a Life Skylander, but there's no element marking the spot and there's no connection to be seen until the Skylander is put in the area. No other level in any of the games has this feature, other than water spots throughout Spyro's Adventure that didn't alter the existing terrain.
- In the alpha versions of Skylanders: Giants, a blue-white energy force field appeared around Skylanders whose element did not match that of the elemental area they were in.[1] The reason for this visual effect and its removal is unknown.
- In Giant's each gate features motifs straight from Spyro's Adventure corresponding to the element. Such as the motifs from Treetop Terrace and Falling Forest for the Life Elemental Gate.
- Exeptions to this are, the motifs for Magic and Fire don't match. With Sky Schooner Docks' motif playing in the Magic Elemental Gate and Quicksilver Vault's motif in the Fire Elemental Gate.
- The Tech Gates in Giants's alpha were originally blocked off by a wall of electrical poles.[2]
- According to concept art, the dual Elemental gates in Swap Force were originally arranged vertically rather than horizontally, with one element appearing on the upper half of the gate and the second element appearing on the lower half.[3]
