Pessac is a commune. It is found in the region Aquitaine in the Gironde department in the southwest of France.
It is in the suburban area of the city of Bordeaux. Like in many suburban cities, the population and urbanisation has increased much since the origins of the town.
Parts of Pessac, like vineyards and parks, though, remain rural. It is the place where wines called "Pessac Léognan" are produced. The commune contains several wine châteaux. The quality of the wines of this area are noticed since at least the eighteenth century, for example by great eighteenth century philosopher Montesquieu. They are many parks in Pessac, here are the main ones:
Pessac is one of the cities (Bordeaux, Pessac, Talence, Gradignan) where the University of Bordeaux stands, on one of the biggest campuses in Europe. The University of Bordeaux is divided into several universities, and Pessac welcomes:
- Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux (politics)
- Bordeaux Montaigne University (literature, languages, human sciences, communication, art)
- Montesquieu University (law, economics)
It is the city of birth of early twentieth century movie director Jean Eustache.
