Biography

[eedit | eedit soorce]

The baund's ruits stretch back tae 1987 when Pól an Ciarán first began playin thegither wi Pól's brither, Derek. The baund (who war cawed Forsaken for a brief period) initially played a rough, hybrid mix o early, primitive Thrash an Daith Metal (playin covers o Death, Sepultura an the like).

Vocalist Nemtheanga (Alan Averill) joined the baund efter seeing an ad for a sanger in Dublin specialist Metal store The Sound Cellar in 1991. Accordin tae Primordial lore, the ad wis pasted ower nae mair nor 2 hours efter it being put up.

Upon Nemtheanga's joinin the baund, the baund startit tae pursue a daurker direction citin influence frae Bathory, Celtic Frost an the emergin Greek an Norse Black Metal scenes.

Primordial wis the first black metal styled baund tae emerge frae Ireland wi the release o their Dark Romanticism demo in the early simmer o 1993 (Cruachan war an aa active at this time combinin Black Metal wi Fowk Muisic). The baund initially came tae the attention o Lee Barrett frae the UK label Candlelight Records but he failed tae move on signing the baund so efter a live, soondboard recordin frae Dublin frae 1994 wis sent tae Cacophonous Records, (Cradle of Filth, Bal Sagoth etc.), the baund signed wi them for the release o their debut album Imrama.

Although their debut album, Imrama, wis characteristic as being in a mair melodic black metal muisical direction, they gradually came tae refine their soond wi A Journey's End, which includit the uise o mandolins an whistles an a mair epic style. The twa subsequent releases, The Burning Season an Spirit the Earth Aflame, showed the baund's reflection o cultural geist an emotion, woven intae an amalgam o black, celtic, an fowk metal muisical styles. They hae toured wi various metal baunds in the extreme metal genre, includin Norse black metal baund Immortal.

The baund's fift album The Gathering Wilderness turned oot tae be a much daurker an bleaker record than ony Primordial haed made afore, providin the listener wi a rawer soond as well. It wis chuist as album o the month in Terrorizer Magazine an appeared in lots o top leets o the year 2005.

In Januar 2006 the baund played their first US show alangside Thyrfing an Moonsorrow at the Heathen Crusade metalfest in Columbia Heights, Minnesota.

Their saxt album, To the Nameless Dead, wis released on 16 November 2007. It receivit virtually universal an owerwhelmin praise, risin tae such accolades as being namit 2008's Metal Album o the Year bi Chronicles of Chaos (continuin an unprecedentit back tae back honoring for Primordial bi the wabzine).

In November an December 2010, the baund entered Foel Studio in Wales tae wirk wi producer Chris Fielding ance again. The resultin seivent album, Redemption at the Puritan's Hand wis released via Metal Blade on 26 Aprile 2011.
