Then they were given creativity, to imagine what -- and who -- could replace the wilderness.

The Afterans are a race of beings who reside in the Ever After. They were created by The Gods to inhabit the realm and reside in the various acres that suit their purposes.

Background[]

The Afterans are a race of bizarre beings who live in the Ever After. All Afterans are fun-loving, chaotic, and live for a good party. While most of them aren't intentionally malicious towards outsiders such as Humans or Faunus, they can still be very dangerous to those who encounter them as they sometimes do not realize when they are taking things too far, which can often lead to unfortunate accidents. They are also fearful of the Jabberwalker, an Afteran which is much more powerful than them, and to their terror, can ensure none of them can Ascend by devouring them alive.

In "Of Solitude and Self", it is revealed that the Afterans were created by The Gods to inhabit the Ever After. They also created the different acres for them to suit their purposes.

Biology[]

Afterans have been confirmed to experience a process called 'Ascension'. This process involves the Afterans being recreated into new forms. These new forms are made for their specific purpose and acre. Unlike Humans or Faunus, Afterans can take on vastly different shapes and sizes which can range from living toys to animals that can speak and are fully sapient. Their current forms can only change if they ascend and wish to be something else.

Afterans are also, to a degree, immortal. Many of them are shown to be incapable of aging, such as the Curious Cat and Jabberwalker, who have lived before Remnant even existed. This trait is mainly applied to inorganic Afterans however, as some Afterans such as Jinxy are noted to age, though in a different manner compared to Humans and Faunus on Remnant.

Special Abilities[]

While not all of them possess special powers, it has been noted that a certain amount can utilize a wide range of different abilities such as shrinking, illusions, telekinesis, and so on. This gives the Afterans a unique set of abilities that differ for each subspecies.

They originally gained their powers from The Gods, which allowed them to better fulfill their role. However, they can also gain powers from the Great Tree through Ascension. When obtaining a new form and purpose, the tree may grant an Afteran new abilities and powers in the process.

History[]

Originally, the Ever After was a completely overgrown, wild and dangerous realm where only the Great Tree existed. In order to maintain the realm and to create a new world that would replace the chaos, two beings emerged from the Great Tree, a yellow fawn and a purple lamb, who would eventually be known as the God of Light and God of Darkness.

After expanding the realm and taming the chaos, the two Brothers used their powers to imagine what and who could replace the wilderness, resulting in the creation of the Afterans. The Brothers would then build homes for them in the form of different acres and gave the Afterans roles to play in the realm.

However, as time went on and the Brothers grew in power, they outgrew their role and wished to do more. As such, in secret they created two beings who could replace them. The first was the Curious Cat, who they created to take over their role in finding the broken parts of the Ever After, while the second was the Jabberwalker, a brutal creature that was hostile to the Afterans and had the ability to break the cycle of Ascension by being the only thing capable of truly ending an Afteran by devouring them.

With their second creation, the God of Light believed they had disrupted the balance of the Ever After and destroyed the Jabberwalker. But the God of Darkness refused to condemn their creation because of their own mistakes and restored it every time his brother broke it. This caused the two of them to fall into bitter rivalry over their ideological differences about balance.

Eventually, the Ever After could no longer bear the Brothers' experiments and the Great Tree created a special doorway to a "greater beyond", where the two were free to create their own worlds as they saw fit. After leaving, the door would always remain open not only for their return, but also for any of their creations if they were to end up in the Ever After.

Culture[]

While not much is known about the Afterans culture, both Somewhat (pre-Ascension) and the Herbalist put much emphasis that all Afterans have a purpose which they strive for. Not much is known entirely about this, though according to Somewhat (pre-Ascension), they state that they had been too young to have a name or as they imply, a purpose. As for the Herbalist, he states that all Afterans have their titles and roles to play, which they must follow diligently. Some Afterans such as the Paper Pleasers eagerly attend to their roles, while those such as the former Red King can be troubled if they fail their roles and don't know what they are.

Afterans also hold the views of life and death much differently in contrast to those of Remnant. Unlike on Remnant, where death is the end, in the Ever After whether willing or their body ceasing function, Afterans instead undergo a process known as Ascension. While it wipes away all memories, Afterans are capable of choosing who they wish to be to restart their purpose again or potentially find a new one. Many Afterans, as such, view Ascension and the Great Tree positively as it allows them to come back and potentially better than before, as seen with the Herbalist who came back in a stronger form than before and more content with himself. Due to these views, the Jabberwalker, an Afteran that can bring actual death, is reacted with dread and fear with all Afterans instinctively fearing it.

It is possible for an Afteran to go beyond their original role such as The Gods, who became powerful enough to outgrow it. Though it is unknown if only they were capable of it due to their unique origins.

Trivia[]

  • Multiple Afteran characters allude to characters from Lewis Caroll's stories such as "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and its sequel "Through The Looking Glass, and what Alice Found There".
  • As the Jabberwalker prevents Ascension, it is unknown if an Afteran devoured by it goes to the afterlife or is simply erased.
