SpongeBob SquarePants: The Spongy Construction Project (currently hidden beneath an obby) was a roleplay experience created by xXTheGooberPeanutXx during the third release, ChumBucketChampion during the game's second release, and spongeis5 during the first release under the Anchor Collective group. It was a fan-game based on the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. It was released in December 2021 during the game's first release, April 2023 during the game's second release, and October 2023 during the game's third release. The game is currently in the process of being ported to Unreal Engine.

"The Spongy Construction Project" started development on April 6, 2016^[1] under the name "SpongeBob Roleplay", although development started picking up at around December 2021, the game gained a lot of popularity, with around 8 million visits at the time. But on June 24, 2022, the game got content deletion due to copyright by Paramount Global due to a DMCA violation, and one of the co-creators of the game^[2], spongeis5, created a tweet about this situation^[3], he stated that him and the development team had contacted Paramount several times, but never got a response.

This and the follow up tweets gained a lot of traction, and many people voiced their opinion online, most stating that it was a wrong decision on Paramount's side, due to the game being non-profit. Several people had stated that the official Nickelodeon experience Nickverse had to do with the game being taken down, but Spongeis5 clarified that the Nickverse developers had nothing to do with the situation. After several months, the company never responded. But on April 1, 2023, the game unexpectedly came back without a proper explanation.

After then the game had regular updates, adding new features regularly. On June 28th, 2023, they announced a 3D animated opening cutscene with voice acting,^[4] although later that same day, the game unexpectedly got content deleted by Paramount due to a DMCA violation.^[5] The developers have since uploaded a new joke game titled "The Bungy Gungy Roject" shortly after the takedown, which they have updated and changed several times. When asked about when the game will come back, the developer "CodyJnutt" responded by saying the game will come back when it's ready to come back. When the developer "Dervinci" was asked if the game will come back, he replied by saying that he isn't too sure, and that it isn't a definite answer right now.

On July 7th, 2023, they held a poll on their Twitter and Discord asking if they should hire a new developer, with two options: "Create a listing," and "Do not hire."^[6] Later that same day "JimmysToenuts" was added to the development team. On July 8th, 2023, they announced that they will be posting a developer application, with five slots open.^[7] On July 15, they posted the application form on Google Forms.^[8]

And on October 15, 2023, it was confirmed on the game's Twitter that the game would return, and about an hour later, the game was back up on the Roblox platform, adding several new features.^[9]^[10] However, this comeback did not last long, because on October 20, 2023, at around 7:10 PM, the game once again got taken down by Paramount due to copyright reasons, no further details were confirmed.

On October 22, 2023, it was announced that the game will be moved from Roblox to Unreal Engine 4, with it likely being released on itch.io.

On December 26, 2023, a secret version of the game's third run was reuploaded, where it can only be played after beating the game "Obby Rush!," however, the game will still be heading to Unreal Engine.^[11]^[12]

Gameplay[]

The Spongy Construction Project is an online Roblox multiplayer game, the game currently features 5 worlds, Conch Street, The Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket, Downtown Bikini Bottom, Jellyfish Fields, and Goo Lagoon. each of these having their own locations and landmarks, the player can walk, run, and jump across these five areas.

There are also several items the player can acquire in the game, such as eatable food, several items have several unique features, most notably the Bubble Wand and Bubble Trident. In the official Discord sever for the game, several gameplay features have been added to the "upcoming updates" section, such as a Jellyfishing minigame, a wallet system, a fridge, and most notably, a housing system.

Criticism[]

During its first, second, and third takedowns, Paramount Global has been criticized for taking down the game as tons of players wanted it back.^[13] Many people even wanted it back when some were disappointed about SpongeBob Simulator that it did not look like a roleplay game.
