Islands of Terror were the second category of Domains in Ravenloft.[1]
Geography & Characteristics[]
Islands of Terror were generally small landmasses, though some were known to be fairly large. They floated independently of the Demiplane of Dread in the Misty Border, being permanently surrounded by mist and cut off from other Domains. Though more stable than Pockets- being capable of lasting for years or even decades[1] - Islands of Terror were still considered to be fairly unstable Domains that could cease to exist if their Standard Lord proved themselves to be unworthy.[2]
If an Island of Terror's Standard Lord proved themselves to be sufficiently foul it was possible that the Domain would become either a Cluster Domain or a Core Domain. This in turn would transform the Standard Lord into either an Overlord or a Darklord respectively. And though it was a rare occurrence, it was possible for a Domain of the latter two categories to be diminished into an Island of Terror and a Domain Lord of the latter two categories to be diminished into a Standard Lord.[2]

History[]
The Grand Conjunction caused many of the older Islands of Terror in the Demi-Plane of Dread to merge together into Cluster Domains.[2]
