“ With great power, there must also come great responsibility. „
~ Spider-Man's mantra and one of the most iconic quotes of all time
“ Hope you were watching, Uncle Ben. 'Cause I did that for you. Kept everyone safe. Kept them from being scared. And I made it fun. It doesn't matter that most of 'em wouldn't have lifted a finger for Peter Parker. That's not why you do it. You do it 'cause it's the right thing to do. Because it's what you would've done. You were more than a father to me, Ben Parker. More than a role model... You were my hero. Now it's my turn. Because from now on, I'm going to be yours! You'll see. I'm going to give it my all! We'll have fun! I'll never quit--and it's going to be amazing!  „
~ Spider-Man
“ For me? This is the end of the Spider-Verse. You see, I've recently been reminded that I have great power and great responsibility... for this world. And for this friendly neighborhood, now and forever... I am their Amazing Spider-Man! „

What Makes Him Pure Good?

In General

  • While he does often make wise-cracking jokes, he takes his job as a superhero very seriously.
  • When he captures criminals and/or wrongdoers, he sends them to the police in order to be arrested instead of taking matters into his own hands and killing them.
  • While he initially used his superpowers for his own benefit, this would all change after the death of Uncle Ben, which led to him deciding to use them to help people and fight crime, honoring his late uncle's advice: "With great power comes great responsibility".
  • Most recently he's finally admitted to his flaws when it comes to protecting his loved ones and is now on a journey to better balance out his life.
  • While he has more than once decided to abandon his secret identity and settle for neutrality, he has quickly decided not to be neutral when a particularly dangerous villain appears.
  • He is also against the actions of dangerous vigilantes who would kill criminals such as the Punisher or Deadpool, to the point where he protects criminals from their actions and is the reason why he would prefer not to team up with them on a regular basis (such as even thought Spider-Man knows the Punisher still targets criminals, he is also aware the Punisher's sloppy methods often endanger innocent people which unintentionally gets them hurt or killed).

Modern Comics

One More Day

  • While he personally beat Wilson Fisk to a bloody pulp and humiliated him, it was because he put Aunt May in the hospital after he sent a hit man out to kill him. Additionally, the Kingpin had done nothing but torment him for years, so this was rather justified.
  • When Aunt May was hit by a stray bullet from one of Kingpin's goons that was meant for him, he tried everything to save May's life (even including time travel). When he ran out of alternatives, he agreed to make a pact with the demon Mephisto in order to save her life, with the condition being that him and Mary Jane would never be married (and consequently the child they were going to have would never be born as well), therefore he sacrificed his own marriage and future daughter for the sake of Aunt May's life.

  • He defeats Norman by exploiting his ego and imprisons him in Ravencroft.

Absolute Carnage

  • He was originally going to help Norman when Cletus Kassidy turned him into Carnage. Only retreating with Eddie due to being outnumbered.

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 6

  • Ever since Norman got cleansed by the Sin-Eater Peter has been making sure that he's keeping him on the right path and doesn't become the goblin again and has helped him better himself as a person, even helping him become a hero of his own: The Gold Goblin, showing just how big Peter's forgiving nature is as he's willing to give a second chance to one of the people that have caused him the most pain in his life and taken so much from him.
    • Even then it's shown that Peter still took precautions in case Norman's true self ever resurfaced such as installing a protocol in his Oscorp suit that would keep reverse-engineered gas that would take away all of Norman's powers.
  • He's been judged worthy by the projector in the Judgement Day Event for his open and pure heart. and was even rewarded with having one final moment with Gwen Stacy.
  • Even though he temporarily became a vengeful monster who began to hunt down his enemies and tried to attack MJ and Paul, this was not out of his own volition as he had been infused with the sins of Norman Osborn and Madelyn Prior herself states that it's not Peter's fault. After being cured and freed, he instantly returns to his normal self and begins trying to make amends with those he hurt.
  • He saved a businessman from falling to his death after trying to take a selfie on the edge of a building and then when Norman contacted him regarding a possible message from the Living Brain, he hurried off to try to investigate and convince Connors to keep the brain isolated.
  • After Norman returns to being the Green Goblin and uses gas to deprive him of his spider powers before injuring him with his glider, he quickly stands up pointing out that even without powers, as long as he's alive, he's still Spider-Man.
  • He tried to reason with Norman's cleansed self as he fought for control against the normal Norman and tried to get him to snap out of it and tell him how much the Goblin knew. He then tricked Norman into taking him to his lab so that he could use the reverse-engineered gas in the Oscorp suit to take away his powers.
  • While he did furiously beat down the weakened Norman and told him that he never trusted him at all, it's justified due to all the misery he brought unto Peter's life and shows that even though Peter tried to give him a chance at a good life, he was always prepared to take action against him to protect his loved ones.
  • When Norman reveals he hid a passcode to take control of Peter and turn him into the Spider-Goblin, he tries to resist as much as he can before succumbing to the brainwashing. Furthermore he can't be held accountable for any of the crimes that Norman forced him to commit due to being forced into it through mind control and not taking part in any of his schemes willingly.

Trivia

  • Silver and Bronze age Comics refers to anything before One More Day as the character got a partial reboot to his character and narrative from the deal he made with Mephisto in saving Aunt May's life in exchange by undoing the storyline of his marriage with Mary Jane.
    • But the biggest reason for this is due to the agree to disagree between Quesada and Straczynski, the writers of One More Day, where Quesada says that One More Day wasn't justified as a reboot to the character's narrative, Straczynski however, says the opposite that there's no way around it, because of that, the Pre-OMD and Post-OMD are treated as separate continuity eras to each other by a big amount of the timeline alterations that were never the initial stories written before One More Day, not to mention that Quesada is more contradictory, as he states that the only altered plot was Peter and Mary being married, of which also changes a lot of the events that happened before hand.
  • Even without counting Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen from Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man is, so far, the character who has the largest amount of Pure Good versions with a total of 11 approved Pure Good versions. He is followed by Link, Michael Afton, and Optimus Prime.
