Silver is a character first appearing in Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version.
He also serves as the Rival to the main character in those games.
Appearance[]
Silver is a tall, slender young man with crimson red hair, pale skin, and dark eyes.
Gold and Silver[]
He wears a high-collared navy coat with red trim, dark violet pants, a black belt around his waist, and navy shoes with red trim that match the colours of his coat.
Crystal[]
Silver's appearance remains the same as it is in Gold and Silver.
HeartGold and SoulSilver[]
Silver's appearance remains mostly the same, but his hair is slightly shorter and a more vivid shade of red. His eye color appears to be gray. However, in the opening sequence to HeartGold and SoulSilver, his eyes are red, like his hair.
Personality[]
Silver is a power-hungry, intensely snobbish, greedy, cruel, callous, cunning, unsympathetic, rude, short-tempered, grouchy, and rather villainous character in the games. In Gold and Silver (Generation II), he steals a starter Pokémon from the lab and is extremely rude and bad-tempered toward the player character, even going so far as to physically shove them on some occasions. He later steals a Sneasel from an unknown Trainer, presumably the Pokemanic in Cinawood City, further showing his cold nature. He will occasionally challenge the player character, and will become enraged when defeated. He doesn't treat his Pokémon with respect, but rather as fighting machines to make him appear powerful and menacing with Silver vowing to take down any Trainer he regards as weak.
However, later in the game, when Silver interferes during the player character's attempt to take down Team Rocket first in Mahogany Town and later, Goldenrod City, he finds himself meeting Lance, the Champion of the Elite Four at Indigo Plateau in the Mahogany Town hideout with Silver challenging Lance to a battle. However, Lance easily defeats Silver and then proceeds to berate the young man for his way of training Pokémon with Lance stating Silver does not believe in nor trust his Pokémon. Even though Silver is left outraged at Lance's attitude, even going so far as to call the Dragon Tamer "a bleeding heart" with Silver vowing to defeat Lance by getting stronger Pokémon, he soon realizes Lance was right when the player character beats him in a battle at the Goldenrod Underground which has Silver realizing the error of his ways as he begins questioning what he has done so far while wondering if love and trust are what he lacks when it comes to treating Pokémon.
He is the son of Giovanni, the Boss of Team Rocket. However, he apparently despises Team Rocket and has a lot of hatred within him which is further shown when during a fateful encounter with Celebi in the Ilex Forest shrine in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player character and their friend are transported back to three years in the past which shows Giovanni abandoning Silver to go into seclusion, presumably at the Tohjo Falls after Red has beaten Giovanni with Silver vowing he will become stronger by himself.

Trivia[]
- Despite Magneton and Sneasel gaining evolutions in Generation IV, Silver's Magneton and Sneasel do not evolve into their final forms when battled at their highest levels. This may be due to Magneton needing to be at Mt. Coronet to evolve and Sneasel needing a Razor Claw.
- Silver's team in Pokémon Stadium 2 consisted of Mewtwo, Lugia, and Ho-Oh, all of them being legendary Pokémon.
- Silver's eye color in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver differs between the artwork and the game. In the artwork, his eyes are gray, while in the game opening, his eyes are red.
- During the special Celebi event, Silver is found in the past arguing with his father Giovanni.
- Before it was revealed that Silver is Giovanni's son, in FireRed and LeafGreen, when Red confronts a Rocket Scientist, he mistook the former for Giovanni's son, only to remember that his son had red hair.
- Silver is the only rival without a canon name even in the Gold and Silver remakes.
- For a good majority of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver Versions, Silver's Golbat was unevovled. Once began to treat his Pokémon with kindness, however, it was revealed to have evolved into Crobat, due to the fact that Golbat evolves into Crobat through friendship.
