The Pokémon Contest Grand Festival! Here at the Lakeside Resort, Dawn is excitedly preparing for tomorrow's opening of this, her ultimate challenge. We now join a Coordinator meet and greet.

- [They look around the room. Brock is instantly infatuated. His friends become startled and hold back.]
- Brock
GIRLS! Wow is right! Yes!
- [Brock zips over to the first woman.]
- Brock
Excuse me, You're beautiful.
- [Brock zips over to the next woman.]
- Brock
Excuse me, You're beautiful!
- [Brock zips over to the next woman.]

And you're shockingly beautiful too!

- [Croagunk stabs him, causing him to scream and fall. Croagunk drags him across the ground.]

- [The rest of the team are having some food.]

(Content) Pikachu.

Nando. Can I get a statement?

Huh?

It's Nando!

My Pokémon and I have been hoping that this glorious day would come to pass.
- Brock
So Nando won all five Ribbons as well.
- Dawn
What a fast recovery.
- [Nando strikes a chord with his harp.]
- Nando
(Singing) I have a brand new performance here to share. and I'm so thrilled that you all will be there.
- Rhonda
Lovely! Thanks so much! (To the camera) And that was a ditty from our favorite Pokémon minstrel, Nando. Thanks!

Look here, it's Dawn! What a wonderful surprise. May I have a word with you?

Me? Just give me a quick sec.
- [Dawn brings a mirror out of her pocket and looks at it facing different directions.]

(Sheepish) Piplup?
- [The opening theme "We Will Carry On!" and title card plays.]

And our next interview is with Dawn, from Twinleaf Town.

So Dawn, tell us how your Grand Festival goes.

I'm hoping to give the best performance I can with my Pokémon. What do you say, Piplup?

I was having a tough time deciding whether to pursue Gym Battles, or Contests...but, you were the ones who first showed me the joy of following both paths. And I am most grateful that we all met.

What about your Gym battles?
- [Nando shows Ash his badge collection, obtaining seven badges.]
- Nando
As you can see, I have seven badges. Which means in order to enter the Sinnoh League, I need one more.
- Ash Ketchum
I only need one more too! So let's make sure we meet up again in the Sinnoh League.

- [Kenny taps Dawn on the shoulder from behind. As soon as she turns, he Pokés her on the cheek.]

(Taunting) Got you Dee Dee, got you!
- Dawn
(Frowning) Kenny!

- Ash Ketchum
Hey Kenny, long time no see.

Ash! Hey man!
- Brock
You see, Kenny is from Twinleaf Town, which is where Dawn's from.

I'm going to win this thing with my great new fusion move.

What's a fusion move?

You'll have to wait and see "Dee Dee dear..."
- Dawn
Then that's just what I'll do.

Hold on. What happened to you whining, 'my name is Dawn'?
- Dawn
That is so old. I got over that whole Dee-Dee thing a long, long time ago. And, I'm not even afraid of Plusle and Minun.
- Dawn's Piplup
(Smug) Pip-iplup!
- [On a double-screen, Plusle and Minun call out and rest on Dawn's shoulders.]

Oh!
- [Plusle and Minun electrocute Dawn, giving her a spiky shiny hairstyle with stars.]

(Shocked gasp)
- [Dawn laughs, and readjusts her hair.]

See? Told you there was no need to worry.
- Kenny
All right, way to go!
- Dawn
Wait a minute. Hold on. Aren't these two...
- Ursula
Those are my little ones. So?
- Ash & Brock
It's Ursula!
- Ash's Pikachu
Pika!
- Dawn
It is!
- [Plusle and Minun affectionately land on Ursula's shoulders.]
- Ursula
Dawn, I'm counting on you to make us all look good today.
- [Ursula walks off. Ash gives Piplup to Dawn.]
- Kenny
(To Dawn) Sounds like you two have a little history.
- Dawn
Uh... I guess you could put it that way.
- Zoey
(Off-screen) Dawn!
- [Dawn turns and sees Zoey, who poses as she greets.]

- Dawn
Hi, Zoey! This is so great. How are you?
- Zoey
Fine. Working hard, tuning things up with Glameow. Hey, Piplup, how have you been?

- [The rest of the team meet her.]

Yup, but things are going to be different this time.

Wait, you two. The only one who's going to win and become Top Coordinator is me. Don't forget. There's no way you're winning this thing!

Nothing like being with a bunch of rivals!

- [Ursula is having something to eat, holding a spoon and bowl.]

Children. Every last one of them.
- [Takes a spoonful but is distracted by Jessie - disguised as Jessilina, laughing on the microphone.]

It's me, Top Coordinator!
- Ursula
Jessilina can sure make a lot of noise.
- Jessie
So no matter what the challenge, I'll take it.- Wham!
- [Jessie snatches the microphone out of Rhonda's hands. She laughs and sweatdrops.]

When they made me, they drained the talent pool.
- [James and Meowth cut in front, wearing suits.]

Count on Jessilina to tell the truth.
- Meowth

- [Later that night, Dawn, in night-wear, speaks to her Pokémon outside the building.]

This is it. The Grand Festival is starting tomorrow.

- [Dawn brings out a badge and shows it.]

See this? It's the first Contest Ribbon mom ever won. And I'm going to work extra hard to honor this. And Ash, and Brock, Pikachu, it's because of you that I made it this far. (Puts its back, bows) Thank you.

No need to worry, Dawn. Now you just give it everything you got.

- Dawn
(Nods) Right! (To her Pokémon) And I know all of you are in awesome shape. (Punches the air) Let's give it the big push!

- [Dawn's other Pokémon cheer. the next day, Ash is training Gible.]
- Ash Ketchum
Gible. This time we'll get your Draco Meteor working perfectly.
- Ash's Gible

- Ash Ketchum
Start by concentrating your will and raising up the Dragon-type power in your body.
- Ash's Gible
Gib!
- Ash Ketchum
Now copy me and give it all you got. Here goes.
- [Ash strains while he concentrates and holds his position.]
- Ash's Pikachu
(Concentrating) Pi...kaaa!
- Ash's Gible
(Concentrating) Gi...

OK. Now just let the power spread from the top of your head all the way down to the tips of your claws.
- Ash's Gible

- Kenny
Huh? Oh! Hey, Ash!
- Ash Ketchum
Come on I know you can do it. (Raises his arm) Finally, aim straight up to the sky and let her rip!
- [Gible loads...]
- Ash's Gible
Gi-i-i-ible!
- [..and releases Draco Meteor. It pops and falls in a wayward direction...]
- Ash Ketchum
Not again!
- [..hitting Kenny causing him to scream and fall.]
- Ash Ketchum
Sorry! Are you okay? Kenny?

What was that?
- Ash Ketchum
It's supposed to be Draco Meteor, but it's not working out so well.
- Ash's Pikachu
Pika-Pika.

That was Draco Meteor?
- Ash Ketchum
Usually what happens is it winds up hitting Piplup for some reason. (Angrily) Come on, Gible, say you're sorry.

Gib-Gible!
- Kenny
It's alright. By the way, where's Dawn?
- Ash Ketchum
She's been going crazy since this morning, but I ran away before she let me have it!
- Kenny
Boy, I hear you! That's Dawn all right.
- [Dawn is brushing her hair. A twang sounds. One of her hair strands comes loose.]
- Dawn
Ohh! Why can't I get my stupid hair to behave just once?!
- [Brock and Zoey arrive.]
- Dawn
Oh, Zoey, great. I need to figure out how to accessorize my outfit since Brock says he's clueless and Ash just ran away!
- Brock
You wanted to know why I asked you to come.
- Zoey
When Dawn gets like this it's always trouble. (Sorts out Dawn's hair) I understand you being nervous, but just look how relaxed Piplup is.
- Dawn's Piplup
Piplup!
- Dawn
Aww...
- Zoey
If you want to know the truth, I'm pretty nervous as well.
- Dawn
Huh? No! I end up feeling jealous of the way you always seem so relaxed, no matter what.
- Zoey
It's the Grand Festival, Dawn. How could you be here and not feel nervous? So I try to think about my Pokémon instead. 'Cause remember...
- Dawn & Zoey
Pokémon are the stars!
- [They giggle. At the site of the Grand Festival, fireworks burst in the sky.]
- Marian
It's here, With all the best Coordinators in the Sinnoh region. The Pokémon Contest Grand Festival! One hundred eight Coordinators who've each earned five ribbons will be showing off their greatest Pokémon right here in the ultimate venue. Today's Contest will be all Double Performances. Each stage will showcase several Pokémon and a variety of moves will be on display. And our final winner will be awarded the prestigious title of Top Coordinator. And now allow me to introduce the people who will be judging this dream competition. First is our Pokémon Contest Director, Mr. Contesta!

Hello, and thank you. I'm truly pleased to be here on this beautiful day at this magnificent event. An event filled with excitement.

And coming to us all the way from the Hoenn region, we're all thrilled to have in our midst, Nurse Joy!

Hello there, everyone!

Wow... She's from Hoenn!
- Brock
(Infatuated) That's the Nurse Joy from Lilycove City!
- [Ash becomes embarrassed while Pikachu and Piplup turn to Brock.]
- Ash's Pikachu
(Embarrassed) Pika.
- Dawn's Piplup
(Exasperated) Piplup?
- Nurse Joy
And to help assist in the first round, I've called my sisters from Pastoria City and Jubilife City.
- [Two Nurse Joys, one with a teal cross and another with a purple cross, show themselves either side.]

And finally as our special guest judge, we're got live and in person the Gym Leader of Hearthome City, Fantina!

(Sweating) Oh? Fantina too?!

- [The spotlights glow and the center circle opens up. Fantina's platform raises, appearing on stage.]

To be here is très bon! I look forward to seeing all of these beautiful, powerful, gorgeous, cute, and magnifique Pokémon!

It really is Fantina.
- Ash Ketchum
I guess that must mean her Gym's still closed.
- [Pikachu and Piplup react disappointed.]
- Marian
Fantina is a Top Coordinator, as well as a world-famous star. We're counting on no-nonsense judging from her today. Without further ado, time for the Performance Stage! We'll have three stages operating today: The Blue, Red and Green stages, running simultaneously. In addition, there will be two judges officiating on each and every Performance stage. So which Coordinators will make it past them, to the second stage?
- Ursula
Eevee Twins, let's go!
- [Ursula throws her special Pokéballs up in the air. As the balls open, musical notes fly out and blue & green staves rise. The two Eevee appear.]
- 2 Eevee
Eevee!
- Dawn
(Suspicious) She's got two Eevee? Eevee...
- [She looks up the Pokémon on her Pokédex.]
- Pokédex
Eevee. The Evolution Pokémon. Eevee is a unique Pokémon that can adapt to its environment by changing its form and abilities when evolving.
- Ursula
Use Iron Tail!
- [The two Eevee jump, swoop and hit their tails together twice.]
- Ursula
Now Hidden Power!
- [The two Eevee line up together, executing the move. Bubbles circulate around them.]
- Ursula
OK, here goes. Now, evolve!
- [Ursula throws up a Fire Stone and a Water Stone, giving them to both Eevee.]
- Dawn
Evolve?
- Ash Ketchum
Hey Brock, what are those?
- Brock
A Fire Stone and a Water Stone.
- [The first Eevee evolves into Flareon...]
- Ursula's Flareon
Flareon!
- [..while the other Eevee evolves into Vaporeon!]
- Ursula's Vaporeon
Vaporeon!
- [The crowd roar into a frenzy.]
- Marian
Right here on the Blue Stage, the fans are really enjoying this incredible performance! Both Eevee magnificently evolved at the same time1
- [A shower of red and blue particles rain down as Ursula stretches her arms out wide, followed by her two newly evolved Pokémon, satisfied. The crowd cheers.]
- Ursula
We did it!
- Mr. Contesta
A truly unexpected achievement, to be sure. Evolving during a performance. And without any wasted movement at all.
- Nurse Joy
What an amazing sight to see.
- Dawn
Flareon and Vaporeon!
- [She looks up the Pokémon on her Pokédex.]
- Pokédex
Flareon. The Flame Pokémon, and an evolved form of Eevee. It stores some of the air it breathes in its internal flame sac, which heats its body to over three thousand degrees.
- [The Pokédex beeps.]
- Pokédex
Vaporeon. The Bubble Jet Pokémon, and an evolved form of Eevee. The composition of its cells is similar to molecules of water, and as such, can melt in water.
- Kenny
That was some way to use evolution! I never thought of doing that.
- Zoey
Interesting, though it'll only work once. It looks impressive as well, so I bet she gets high marks.
- Dawn
Ursula's tough.
- [Back on stage, Altaria and Kricketot are flying.]
- Marian
And now on the Green Stage, here's a performance that will amaze you all!
- Nando
(While playing the harp) Altaria, sing a Perish Song and Kricketot, I want you to Sing as well!
- [Altaria sings and twists, generating a flurry of stars. Kricketot dances, with glowing musical notes of different colors floating out of its mouth. Altaria, carrying Kricketot, flies across the musical notes. The notes appear by Ash and Brock.]
- Ash Ketchum
Kricketot's singing!
- [Ash scans the Pokémon on his Pokédex.]
- Pokédex
Kricketot. The Cricket Pokémon. Its legs are short, and if it stumbles, its hard antennae can make a xylophone-like sound when they rub together.
- Ash Ketchum
That's just like Nando, to use sound while performing.
- Brock
For sure. And his technique is so high-level.
- Mr. Sukizo
That music, remarkable!
- Nurse Joy
And using such beautiful moves like that in a Contest, it's wonderful!
- [Cut to Seviper, which a spiral of smoke surrounding it.]
- Marian
And now, on the Red Stage, Jessilina is showing off moves of her very own!
- [Jessie squeals and jumps on top of Seviper's head. She nails the landing and laughs.]
- James
I do hope those judges saw that. Although they haven't seen anything yet.
- Meowth
Yeah. Truly...re-meow-kable!
- [Wobbuffet cuts in, holding pom-poms.]
- Wobbuffet
Wob! Bu!
- [Yanmega appears, facing Jessie.]
- Jessie
My incredible athleticism is, of course, part of my appeal. Yanmega, now, Silver Wind!
- [Yanmega fires Silver Wind at Jessie, glowing a bright light. As soon as the light changes, her dress changes to her "Victory-dress wear", wearing a pink maid's uniform. The crowd cheers.]
- Jessie
Good! Of course you love Jessilina's victory dress-wear!
- Fantina
Wow, that was magnifique! I just love her spirit, and how she shows off her moves with her Pokémon and then herself as well! That is what I love to see!
- Nurse Joy
Yes, that was fun, wasn't it?
- James
(Excited) Our girl really wowed them with her looks!
- Meowth
Yeah if you got it like I do, you go with it!
- Wobbuffet
Wob-bu!
- [Shots of performances from Blaziken & Sceptile, Rapidash & Girafarig, Skuntank and Toxicroak, Cleffa & Steelix and Lickilicky & Rattata are shown. Cut to the blue stage, where from a bird's eye view, the platforms slide open, revealing water.]
- Marian
And now, on the Blue Stage, it's Zoey from Snowpoint City! Zoey's performance uses a water theme.
- [Lumineon jumps out of the water.]
- Zoey
Use Aqua Ring!
- [Lumineon surrounds itself in three watery rings.]
- Zoey
Gastrodon, come on out!
- [A West-Sea Gastrodon appears.]
- Zoey's Gastrodon
Gastrodon!
- Zoey
Use Water Pulse!
- [Gastrodon fires Water Pulse into the rings, causing an explosion of stars. The three rings, surrounded by stars, rotate vertically above the pool of water. Lumineon jumps through all three of them. Gastrodon also jumps over the rings. The rings rotate horizontally, circulate the center of the pool, and then spout out whirlpools. Zoey jumps on top of one of the whirlpools and does a finishing pose, along with Lumineon and Gastrodon on separate ones. The crowd cheer.]

A performance dripping with Water-type spectacle! Completely marvelous!
- Nurse Joy
And amazingly well-trained, too!
- [Dawn watches on.]
- Dawn
(Jealous) Zoey is so amazing.
- Marian
And now appearing on the Red Stage, it's Kenny from Twinleaf Town.
- Kenny
Now, Floatzel, Aqua Jet; and Empoleon use Hydro Cannon!
- [Floatzel charges upwards creating a waterfall, while Empoleon shoots cannonballs from its mouth into the waterfall, creating a corkscrew effect.]
- Kenny
Yeah! Floatzel, use Razor Wind!
- [The waterfall turns into a series of shining disks, flying around the stadium.]
- Marian
Razor Wind fused with the water, and it's spreading all around the stage!
- Kenny
Empoleon, use Metal Claw!
- [Empoleon slashes the disks, shattering them. The team land, satisfied.]
- Zoey
Nice job. A powerful performance.
- Dawn
Mm. Empoleon and Floatzel really showed off their strengths.
- Kenny
Now for our big move. Floatzel, Whirlpool! Empoleon, Flash Cannon, go!
- [Floatzel sets up and holds the Whirlpool.]
- Kenny
Floatzel, hold onto the Whirlpool!
- [Empoleon sets up an orb, ready to execute Flash Cannon.]
- Kenny
Now let's see if this all works...
- [Empoleon shoots the beam into the whirlpool.]
- Ash Ketchum
That's a lot of power to keep bottled up.
- [An explosion sounds. Floatzel is blasted high in the air. Kenny and Empoleon, along with Ash & friends, gasp in shock. Zoey and Dawn watch on concerned.]
- Dawn
Kenny!
- [A staff member pops in through the door.]
- Staff Member
Next Green Stage contestant it's your turn, so please stand by.
- Dawn
Huh? OK.
- Marian
And next on the Green Stage, please welcome Dawn from Twinleaf Town.
- [The curtains open. The crowd cheers in excitement as Dawn arrives. She draws her two Pokéballs.]
- Dawn
Cyndaquil! Buneary! Spot...light!
- [As the Pokéballs are released, white ribbons form. Both Pokémon call out, excited.]
- Ash Ketchum
Go, Dawn! Good luck!
- Dawn's Piplup
Piplup!
- Ash's Pikachu
Pika!
- [The ribbons form a bow-tie which shatters into a shower of stars, revealing the Pokémon. Nurse Joy and Mr. Sukizo gasp and smile in awe. Buneary hops and starts leaping up in the air.]
- Marian
Buneary makes a huge leap.
- Dawn
Buneary, Ice Beam, go!
- [Buneary twists and shoots Ice Beam, creating a frozen roller-coaster track around the arena.]
- Marian
A beautiful sight! It's a frozen roller coaster!
- Dawn
Now, Cyndaquil, use Flame Wheel!
- [Cyndaquil curls up into a ball and rides along the roller-coaster track, creating a half-pipe. A happy Buneary slides along the half-pipe.]
- Marian
Cyndaquil and Buneary are having a ton of fun and bringing the fans right along with them!
- [Pikachu and Piplup are elated, jumping up and down.]
- Ash Ketchum
(Laughs) They're having a ball!
- Brock
Dawn's doing an amazing job of utilizing the whole stage and getting the crowd to have fun too!
- Dawn
Use Ice Beam one more time!
- [Buneary holds Ice Beam.]
- Dawn
Cyndaquil, Smokescreen, now!
- [Cyndaquil executes Smokescreen, creating a smoke ball and hiding both Pokémon. At that point, Buneary releases Ice Beam. The ice appears within the smoke cloud]
- Marian
Whoa! Buneary and Cyndaquil have become totally hidden by that Smokescreen!
- [Mr. Sukizo groans.]
- Ursula
(Smiling) Oh dear. They're all covered up. That's got to look bad to the judges.
- Dawn
Okay now, Cyndaquil!
- [Cyndaquil flames its back, clearing the smoke. The smoke reveals a large frozen Pokéball with Buneary visible inside of it. The crowd cheers.]
- Mr. Sukizo
Wow! Remarkable!
- Nurse Joy
A frozen Pokéball, how enchanting! A work of art made of fire and ice!
- Dawn
Buneary, Cyndaquil, Awesome!
- [Pikachu and Piplup hold each others hands and jump up and down, elated.]
- Ash Ketchum
Hah! Oh man, they pulled it off!
- Brock
She's really come a long way.
- Ursula
Well, well. So the Smokescreen worked. Who would've thought?
- Zoey
(Annoyed) Dawn would never waste any of the experience she's gained. Her double performance was great!
- Ursula
Whatever. I'll make sure you and Dawn never meet in the final round.
- Zoey
Hm! We'll see about that.
- Marian
Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, all three stages are completed and all Coordinators have finished their first round performances. Please be patient while we tabulate and announce the first round results and then we'll see who moves on to the second round.
- [Everyone is silent, waiting patiently.]
- Dawn's Piplup
Piplup?
- Dawn
Hey, no need to worry.
- Marian
All right, and here are the results of the first round.
- [The Coordinators watch the screen, waiting.]

After a tough evaluation by the judges, these thirty-two hard-working and talented contestants will be moving on to the exciting second round contest battle.
- [The icons pop up on the screen one at a time. Zoey, Nando, Jessilina and Ursula appear on the list. Jessie laughs.]
- Jessie
Well. No surprise there.
- [James and Meowth celebrate.]
- James
Our girl is in!
- Meowth
That means, we're in too! In the pink, that is!

- [Dawn also appears on the list.]

(Happy) All right!

- [Dawn laughs.]

- [The last two icons show up. Kenny reacts in disappointment. The full list is revealed. Kenny groans.]

These thirty-two contestants will be moving on to the second round contest battle tomorrow.
- Kenny
(To Ash & friends) Hey, guys. That's great you made it to Round Two.
- Ash Ketchum
Sorry about that last fusion move. Tough break.
- Kenny
We trained pretty hard on it, too. But I guess we just didn't focus enough.
