HD Zomboss

Edgar George Zomboss, also known as Dr. Zomboss or simply Zomboss, is the main antagonist of the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. He leads all zombies to attack the player's house. He is known as the arch-enemy of Crazy Dave.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Dr. Zomboss appeared in 7 games

has appeared in six games, with similar zombies appearing in other games. Edgar Zomboss was voiced by Russell Brand.

Characteristics[]

Physical Appearance[]

Dr. Zomboss is generally depicted as an incredibly intelligent zombie and according to some sources he is the creator of the zombies. He has also mastered time travel and in the near future may also manage to explore the multiverse.

Personality[]

Dr. Zomboss is an intelligent and evil being who can construct several powerful machines and deploy a mass array of zombies to thwart Crazy Dave, the players, their friends and their botanical arsenal. He has an obsession with tormenting the players and their allies, as he could perform his mechs to harm the players' plants. He also likes to crush his minions and showed no concern, regret or remorse about it, not only based on the game's mechanics, but also demonstrates that he harms anyone and anything that gets both his way and in his way, ranging from any friendly and innocent and hostile and violent annoyances i.e. animals, humans, the law and children to even Zomboss's own allies, showing that Zomboss is selfish, disloyal and hypocritical for his own monstrous gain.

Zomboss is also very manipulative, as he tried to pursue and persuade the players and their friends multiple times to let them refuse to fight him and his army. All of his lies would come too far when he told them that Plant Foods are from zombies. However, even if he is a good liar, the players would still fight them, as Penny later debunked all of those false theories afterward. Although he may be a liar, at the end of Plants vs. Zombies 2, Zomboss tried to convince Crazy Dave that he should stop seeking to re-eat the taco, as it would damage time itself, only to be proven wrong.

In the first two shooter games, all of Dr. Zomboss's constructions of various machines and locations were his proper mindset. He always pushes his zombies to fight the plants at all costs. He dislikes them failing him, but he was not very angry at them, as stated in one of his lines: "I'm not mad, just disappointed." On the contrary, he likes to compliment his zombies when they are victorious over the plants.

In Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, Zomboss is determined to unite the Zombie Heroes to submit to his world domination goals. To show his relationships with the Zombie Heroes, in general, he congratulates them if they fulfilled his plans. In individuals, Zomboss is annoyed by Super Brainz and Impfinity's mischief, as with Professor Brainstorm, he is envied by the professor's intellect.

In Battle for Neighborville, Zomboss's traits were toned to a generic villain, where he likes to abuse his minions in brutal ways, similar to the version of him in the Dark Horse comics. The closest thing Zomboss would show his kindness to his minions is either giving them a minute break or the zombies not being yelled at for a while. He also shows respect to the players, but he doesn't if the players fail him. Most of his sentences in the game only credit Zomboss himself due to his pure egotism.

However, Zomboss isn't above helping Crazy Dave, the players and their friends overpower more monstrous and crueler threats even greater than Zomboss himself, showing that he does have redeeming qualities and a strong sense of honor.

History[]

Plants vs. Zombies[]

Dr

In the original Plants vs. Zombies, as well as Plants vs. Zombies: Journey to the West, Dr. Zomboss is the final boss that player faces. Controlling his Zombot, the player faces him in level 5-10.

Dr. Zomboss will create either a fireball or an ice ball to crush the plants. He can also crush an area of plants by throwing a van and stomping on them for those that were planted on the flat side of the roof, and remove the plants by summoning 3 Bungee Zombies. When defeated, his robot is destroyed, zombies summoned by him will also be defeated by despawning from the screen (also plants stolen by Bungee Zombies without returning to their original tile because once the grabbing time occurs, that plant is now part of a zombie) and the player will have officially beaten Adventure Mode.

Emperor ZombotGWE

In the Chinese spinoff game Plants vs. Zombies: Great Wall Edition, Dr. Zomboss is replaced with Emperor Zombot. However, despite the large visual differences along with the lack of a pilot, Emperor Zombot functions exactly like Dr. Zomboss himself, apart from the fact he can appear in the game's unique version of Survival: Endless.

Plants vs. Zombies 2[]

Dr. Zomboss makes a return in Plants vs. Zombies 2 and its Chinese version, continuing to obstruct the player, Crazy Dave, and Penny's adventure.

Apart from the Chinese-exclusive Kongfu World, Dr. Zomboss appears as a boss in every world, in a unique Zombot themed around the corresponding world each time.

However, amidst the chaos, he unintentionally hits the self-destruct button. While the hero laser zaps several other zombies, it also zaps several plants, turning them into Plant Heroes.

He and his Zombots appear as cameos in the game, and he can be seen when Zombot's Wrath is used.

Plants vs. Zombies 3 (Currently unavailable)[]

Dr

Dr. Zomboss is a Brainiac Zombie in Plants vs. Zombies 3. Dr. Zomboss will first appear on the 10th floor of the Devour Tower and will appear every 3 Floors after that. His Abilities include:

  • Summon zombies encountered this floor (there may be a few exceptions).
  • Electrocute plant(s), damaging and stunning them.
  • Create fog in the 7th, 8th and 9th columns.
  • Create two portals, when zombies enter one of them, they will exit from the other one in the opposite direction, like Portal Combat.
  • The Zombot attacks with its front claws, dealing huge damage in the 6th column and leave it unplantable for a while.
  • Launch a missile, dealing heavy damage to plants in a 3x3 grid (Enough to kill lower/same level non-defensive plants)
  • The Zombot disappears and summon several small duplicates of the Zombot, they are very weak and killing them will slightly injure the Zombot. The Zombot will reappear after some time.
  • The Zombot levitates, preventing most plants (including lobbers) from damaging it.
  • Create a breakable shield in front of the Zombot and moving with it, blocking damage from most plants.
  • Transform a zombie into a Gargantuar.

Almanac entry[]

"Edgar George Zomboss achieved his Doctorate in Thanatology in only two years. Quickly mastering thanatological technology, he built his fearsome Zombot and set about establishing absolute dominance of his local subdivision."

Trivia[]

  • Dr. Zomboss is the only zombie that uses proper grammar and to have neat, readable calligraphy handwriting.
  • Dr. Zomboss has a degree in thanatology, the study of death and the emotions surrounding it. This further shows his intelligence as opposed to other zombies.
  • In the comic Plants vs. Zombies: Bully For You, it is revealed that Dr. Zomboss has a pet goldfish bowl named "Ziggy." This is because that his pet goldfish kept running away so he now just has a pet goldfish bowl. According to him, it is simpler. It is also shown in this comic that the Anti-Bully Squad stripped him of his Doctorate in Thanatology. He is not shown to have ever gotten it back.
    • In the Dark Horse comics, he is shown to also have a pet hedgehog named Mr. Stubbins.
      • However, Mr. Stubbins' original owner is one of Dr. Zomboss' rivals of Bully for You, though this changed at the end of the comic.
  • Some of the descriptions in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and its sequel reveal some part of Zomboss's personal life.
    • He once lost a battle against a tennis ball machine according to Tennis Star's Stickerbook description.
    • When the player talks to Grumpy Stumpy, he reveals that Zomboss is a good cook.
    • He owns a company named Zomboss Inc. However, it is unknown what this company does.
  • In Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, when unlocking Professor Brainstorm, a comic strip shows that he was once a judge in a science fair.
  • According to some Wiz Factz signs in the Seeds of Time map, Dr. Zomboss was born in the Year of The Naked Mole Rat.
  • He is one of the few zombies that smile, the others being Imp, Jack-in-the-Box Zombie and Money Bag Zombie. However, these are all manic smiles.
  • When you defeat Dr. Zomboss in the original game, he makes the same death sound as Gargantuar.
  • In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, the original Zombot makes a cameo. In one of the stages, the player can see the Zombot's head lying on the ground.
  • Dr. Zomboss keeps a swear jar, as seen in the Garden Warfare comics.
  • According to the comic Boom Boom Mushroom, Zomboss is allergic to 74.000 different plants, including Chompers, Peashooters, Cacti and Wall-nuts. However, he is not allergic to Doom-shroom as in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle Extravagonzo, he didn't show allergic reaction when he went under the arena.
  • He was voiced by Russell Brand, who also voiced Dr. Nefario from the Despicable Me franchise and Creek from Trolls.[1][2]
  • In PvZ2, when the player defeats Zomboss in any map except for Neon Mixtape Tour due to completing a level there plays its victory theme, there's a high chance that the victory theme of Neon Mixtape Tour plays.
    • Somehow, it doesn't block the Zomboss Battle Victory Theme.
  • If the player defeats Dr. Zomboss and there are zombies remaining, they will also be defeated. The reason for this is because the game considers Dr. Zomboss as a single unit and the boss with spawned zombies as a single wave or group of zombies thus when a controlling zombie (Dr. Zomboss) is defeated with its associated zombies (zombies that are on the screen), zombies spawned by Dr. Zomboss will also be defeated which is evident to when the Bungee Zombies from Zombot's hand steal a plant and some remain on-screen, those that remain on the screen will be defeated or despawn and the plant will not be stolen due to the boss dangling out Bungee Zombies on his robot fingers and has total control of when to hoist them back up. Thus, Dr. Zomboss has total control over the zombies that he spawns during the battle and the entire wave.
    • In Plants vs. Zombies, they will simply despawn upon Dr. Zomboss' defeat (similar to when a Bungee Zombie dies or a zombie in pool lanes hit by an explosion). However, when there is a Zomboni and the above situation happens, he will also despawn but the ice trail will remain. If the player either waits for an ice trail to disappear or uses Jalapeno to melt it, the trail will also disappear thus if Dr. Zomboss is defeated, the Zomboni will despawn first before its ice trail.
      • If the zombie is defeated but its body does not drop into the ground yet, it will also despawn. This is because headless bodies of zombies are still considered by the game as living until they drop into the ground where they are now considered as zombies died/defeated.
      • Zombies despawning when Dr. Zomboss is defeated count as "zombies died/defeated" as they will sometimes drop coins. Their death animation and sound (i.e. Zomboni and Catapult Zombie exploding, and animation and sound of Gargantuar dying) will also be skipped.
        • The reason why ice trails do not despawn upon Dr. Zomboss' defeat is because it has a predetermined time for it to disappear which is 30 seconds.
      • Hypnotized zombies will also despawn if Dr. Zomboss is defeated despite that they are on the player's side. This is because even though they are hypnotized, they still count by the game as zombies thus both hypnotized and non-hypnotized ones will despawn upon the boss' defeat.
      • However, if a button that despawn all zombies on-screen is selected through third party programs, he will simply despawn, and not show the defeat animation and play a sound when he is defeated.
  • In Plants vs. Zombies 2, they will turn into ashes or play their death animation if his creations is defeated.
  • The boss mode trailer is also (so far) the only time Dr. Zomboss has spoken English and not gibberish.
  • When he is defeated by hypnotized zombies in Plants vs. Zombies, the defeat sound will not be played and only show the animation of being defeated (Zombot fell into parts and raising a white flag indicating his surrender). Non-hypnotized zombies and hypnotized zombies will also despawn upon Dr. Zomboss' defeat.
    • However, if the progress bar (which represents Dr. Zomboss's health) is full while he summons Bungee Zombies to steal plants, he will become invincible from being defeated until either they are defeated or the plants are stolen. Once either the Bungee Zombies are defeated or plants being targeted by them are stolen, Dr. Zomboss's defeat animation without the sound will then be shown.
    • When Dr. Zomboss is defeated and there are Bungee Zombies left on the screen along with a stolen plant, that zombie and a plant will despawn without returning the plant to its original tile. This is because once the grabbing time of a Bungee Zombie occurs and the zombie goes away, the plant now counts as stolen, and being removed from gameplay and part of a zombie by the game.
