The Carriers of the Code that were present during the Fourth Brethren Court.
The Carriers of the Code were two pirate librarians appointed to assist the Keeper of the Code, delivering the Pirata Codex to the Pirate Lords when so ordered by the Keeper. The position could not be transferred and was held until mortal demise.
History[]
Origins[]
It was at the Second Meeting of the Brethren Court that the Pirates' Code was set down by the Pirate Lords Morgan and Bartholomew and recorded in the Pirata Codex. The Court held that the Code was law, but some would consider them more actual guidelines.[1]
Subsequent to the creation of the Code, new members of the Court were appointed, including the Keeper of the Code who was its protector and herald. Upon request, the Keeper of the Code would interpret the Code as written, clarify points of contention, and announce his findings to the Pirate Lords. The Keeper designated his or her successor. The Keeper was assisted by the Carriers of the Code, two men assigned to deliver the Pirata Codex to the Pirate Lords when so ordered by the Keeper of the Code. At times when the Brethren wish to declare an act of war against a common adversary, they could only do so upon the agreement and the election of a Pirate King, who would be sworn in by the Keeper of the Code.[1]
When the actions of the rogue pirates threatened the safety of the Brethren Court, Captain Edward Teague decided to organize the Court of Inquiry, so the assembled Pirate Lords could decide if Captain Boris Palachnik, the Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea, was the one who knowingly broke the Code by slaughtering his prisoners and attacking other pirate ships. During the Court, a burly pirate guard carried the Code book into the Great Chamber, while the Prison Dog carried the keys. However, despite the testimonies of several witnesses, Teague could not find the definite answer, so the Pirate Lords decided to summon Davy Jones, the supernatural ruler of the underwater realms.[2]

The Code brought in.
During the time of the Fourth Brethren Court, two wizened old men who held the position of Carriers of the Code. They were summoned by Captain Teague after Hector Barbossa, now the Lord of the Caspian Sea, called upon the Keeper of the Code to settle a dispute between him and Jack Sparrow, Lord of the Caribbean Sea, regarding that only a Pirate King could declare an act of war. Teague had the two men bring forth the Pirata Codex while the other pirates attending the Court looked on with awe. After the matter was settled and the newly instated Captain Elizabeth Swann was elected as the new Pirate King of the Brethren Court, the Carriers of the Code closed the book and stowed it away where it belonged.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- The Carriers of the Code first appeared in the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. While not named in the film,[3] the title "Carriers of the Code" first appeared in 2007 book The Pirates'
CodeGuidelines.[1] - It is unknown who the two characters who acted as Carriers of the Code in At World's End, nor the actors who portrayed them. The closest the actors were identified were by property master Kris Peck, when talking about how the final dimensions of the Pirata Codex weighed 80 and contained a thousand pages of textured parchment. "So we had to make two books, because we had these two little old men in the film, sort of like a 90-year-old ZZ Top with beards down to here, playing the pirate librarians, who have to carry it. And since Captain Teague, played by Keith Richards, is the Keeper of the Code, we wanted to give him something easier to work with. So the second version only weighed about ten pounds."[4]
- In the short film, Tales of the Code: Wedlocked, two men carried the Code book to lock it up. However, like At World's End, the identities of the characters and the actors who portrayed them are unknown.[5] It is only known that they are a different set of characters and actors.
