The Caspian Sea
- "That's Koldunya—means 'witch' in Russian—and she belongs to Boris Palachnik, the Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea. Borya's our rogue pirate captain."
- ―Jack Sparrow to Esmeralda
The Caspian Sea was the largest enclosed body of water on Earth, often described as the "world's largest lake" and sometimes referred to as a full-fledged sea. An endorheic basin, it lied between Europe and Asia, and bordered Russia and Iran, among others. The northern portion freezes in the winter, but it was hot during the summer. The Caspian Sea was home to a wide range of species and was famous for its caviar. Written accounts perceived the Caspian Sea as an ocean, probably because of its salinity and large size.
History[]
The first known Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea was Boris "Borya" Palachnik,[1] who later passed the title to Hector Barbossa.[2][3][4] Barbossa would later be wanted dead or alive by the East India Trading Company for piracy in the area.[5] During Barbossa's lordship, the northern portion of the Caspian Sea freezes in the winter, but during the summer it's hot as blazes. The Caspian Sea also a rich source of caviar, a favorite delicacy of Barbossa.[4]
