A. L. BABINGTON. ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
-No. 550,433. Patented Nov. 26, 1895.
AN DREW EGRAHAM. FHOTO-UTHDYWASNINGTON. n c
UN ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNIE L. BABI-NGTON, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,433, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed June 20, 1895- Serial N0. 553,453- (N0 model.)
To aZl whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANNIE L. BABINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oakland, Alameda county, Stateof California, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Abdominal Supporters and \Vaists; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My'invention relates'to a device which is designed as a combined abdominal supporter and waist.
It consists in certain details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a general View of my waist. Fig. 2 is a view of the back portion. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section through one of the meeting ends of the front and back portions.
The object of my invention is to provide an abdominal supporter and in conjunction therewith an upward extension forming a waist to surround and support the upper or bust portion of the body, with a means whereby an upward support or pressure will be maintained throughout the whole structure, and a convenient means forfitting and adjustingthe device.v
My device consists of a front portion A A. The lower portion A is adapted to fit the protuberance of the abdomen and the upper portion A is fitted to the bust and chest of the wearer.
B B are the sections forming the rear or back portion of the device. These are made of a length corresponding with the length of the front portion, and their adjacent edges upon the back are united by transverse elastic strips 0. v
The meeting edges of the front and back sections are provided with flexible bones D, extending vertically from top to bottom, and behind these are made eyelets E, through which lacing-strings F are adapted to pass and by which these edges are brought together. Each of the adjacent edges of the back sections B are in like manner fitted with vertical flexible bones D near the transverse elastic strips 0 previously described, and these bones being rigid vertically serve to support the back and shoulders. The front and back sections are also connected by shoulder-straps K, and the device is held down by thigh-straps L. 7
Upon both front and back sections are ing edges of the parts A and B, and the straps I, attached upon the other side, which are intended to pass through said buckles. By this construction the meeting edges of the parts A and B are brought under the arms, and, one side being permanently laced, after having been fitted to the person, the other can be conveniently laced upon the opposite side when the device is to be applied. After this the straps I are passed through the buckles H and may be drawn up to any desired tension. These straps passing over the hips of the wearer bring a pressure upon those parts, the tendency of which is to force the device upward and' thus acts to raise and properly support the abdomen, and by reason of' the vertical flexible bones connecting the upper part with the lower it also raises the bust and upper portion correspondingly, the whole being practically supported from the hips and shoulders and prevented from being forced up too much by the thigh-straps. The action in this case is the reverse of that of a corset, which, being shaped to the form and made smaller at the waist than it is at the upper part, has a tendency to press downward.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An abdominal supporter consisting of'a single continuous front portion fitted to the abdomen and extending to the hips on each side, independent back sections extending from the hips to near the center of the back, and provided, at their meeting edges, with eyelets, independent transverse elastic strips by which the adjacent edges of the back sections are permanently andyieldingly united, lacing strings by which the adjacent edges of the front and back sections are detachably united on vertical side lines, and supplemental, independently adjusting buckle straps and tabs uniting the front and back sections across the meeting side lines.
2. An abdominal supporter consisting of a continuous front section extending to the hips on each side, independent back sections with independent transverse elastic strips by which their meeting edges are permanently and yieldingly connected, lacing strings engaging eyelets along the vertical meeting edges of the front and back sections upon opposite sides, and vertically disposed reinforcing flexible bones, fixed between said edges and the eyelets, and along the adjacent edges of the back sections.
3. An abdominal supporter consisting of a single continuous front section extending to the hips 011 each side, independent back sections with separate transverse elastic strips permanently and yieldingly connecting them on the vertical central line of the back, lacing strings engaging eyelets along the vertical meeting edges of the front and back sections, vertical flexible reinforcing strips interposed between the eyelets and the edges, supplemental buckle straps and tabs extending across the meeting edges of the front and back sections, and vertical stay straps fixed to the front and back sections to form reinforce attachments for the buckle straps and tabs.
ently adjustable buckle straps and tabs attached to said stays and uniting across the laced edges, and a bust supporting extension formed integral with the supporter, with shoulder straps from its upper edge and thigh straps from the bottom of the supporter.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ANNIE L. BABINGTON.
