James David Vance (fødd James Donald Bowman i 1984) er ein amerikansk politikar for Det republikanske partiet, investor og jurist frå Middletown i Ohio. Han har vore senator for Ohio sidan 2023. Den 15. juli 2024 vart Vance utpeika av Det republikanske partiet og Donald Trump til visepresidentkandidat for Trump i det komande amerikanske presidentvalet i 2024.^[1]^[2]

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Hans besteforeldre på begge sider kom frå Breathitt County i Kentucky i randen av Appalachia, og flyttet til Middletown i Rustbeltet.

Etter avslutta skulegang forlét han Middletown.^[3]

Endring av etternamn

Opphavleg heitte han James Donald Bowman. Foreldra skilde seg då han var eit par år gammal, og ikkje lenge etter gifta mora seg på nytt og sørgde for at sonen fekk etternamnet til adoptivfaren sin, Bob Hamel. Seinare i oppveksten flytta han til foreldra til mora, Jim og Bonnie Vance, og fekk namnet James David Vance.^[4]

Frå militæret til sivil karriere

Vance har tenestegjort i det amerikanske marinekorpset, der han arbeidde som krigsjournalist i Irak, i 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Han studerte statsvitskap og filosofi ved Ohio State University og er utdanna jurist frå Yale Law School. Etter jusstudia flytta han til Silicon Valley for å jobba som investor, og han har over tid lagt seg opp ein stor formue.^[5]

Bokutgiving

I 2016 publiserte han boka Hillbillyens klagesang, som han hevda var ei sjølvbiografisk skildring av oppveksten under tøffe vilkår i Ohio i dei fattige områda rundt fjellkjeda Appalachane. I USA blir fattigfolk frå desse områda ofte omtalt som hillbillies, og allereie då boka kom ut reiste det seg kritiske stemmer som hevda at Vance slett ikkje hadde vakse opp i fattige kår, men tvert imot hadde ein kvit middelklassebakgrunn.^[6]^[7]

Etter bokutgivinga vart Vance ofte invitert til å kommentera samfunnsutviklinga i USA, og ikkje minst den politiske utviklinga. I samband med dette tok han mellom anna avstand frå Donald Trump, og hevda at fattige veljarar i Appalachane søkte seg mot Trump – som då var presidentkandidat for første gong – fordi dei (feilaktig) trudde at han var den som forstod og ville hjelpa dei ut av misèren dei levde i.^[8]

Boka vart seinare filmatisert; TV-filmen hadde premiere på Netflix i 2020.^[9]^[10]
