Podrick Payne: Catelyn Stark would be proud. You kept your vow.
Brienne: I did next to nothing.
Podrick Payne:"You're too hard on yourself, my lady.
Brienne: I'm not a... Thank you, Podrick.
~ Podrick congratulating Brienne while they see the reunited Stark children.
There has never lived a more loyal squire.
~ Tyrion Lannister on Podrick's kindness and loyalty.

Podrick Payne is a supporting character in both the A Song of Ice and Fire novels series and the television adaptation Game of the Thrones. Initially a squire to Lord Tyrion Lannister until his arrest, he eventually served Brienne of Tarth as a squire until the two became knights in Bran Stark's council.

He was portrayed by Daniel Portman.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • Saved Tyrion Lannister's life from the knight that tried to kill him during the Battle of the Blackwater by protecting him while he was unconscious.
  • When Tyrion rewarded him with a payment to whores and they refused to take it, he gives back the money to Tyrion.
  • Refused to a proposal from the Gold Cloak to give him knighthood if he agrees to testify against Tyrion, instead remaining loyal to him to the end.
  • Informed Tyrion about his judges on his trial and the witnesses known, and planned to defend Tyrion before being sadly rebuffed in order to escape.
  • Became Brienne's squire and aided her on various missions.
  • Warns Brienne from talking to Hot Pie about Sansa, though Hot Pie turned out to be reliable and friendly.
  • Alongside Brienne, he attempted to convince Arya to join them and kindly allowed her to leave when she refused.
  • Helped Brienne follow Sansa, and when Sansa refused to join them, he tried to release her from the oath to her mother. also praises Brian's about the try to keep safety the two girls, and cause her to thank him.
  • Warned Brienne about Stannis's army getting close.
  • Saved Sansa and Theon from captivity by Bolton soldiers and helped Brienne kill them all before escorting them to safety.
  • Tried to recruit the Blackfish and his men to fight Ramsay in the Battle of the Bastards.
  • Before the war against the Wights, he sang to lift the warriors' spirits.
  • Bravely fought alongside Jaime and Brienne to defeat the wights. For his bravery and leadership, he becomes a member of the Kingsguard.
  • Unlike nearly every other character in the series, Payne lacks corrupting qualities.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He's below the standards of other characters like Ned, Jon, Daenerys, and Arya, since most of the time he mainly follows orders to stand out, though this is minor considering how he plays important parts of the story, like the Battle of Winterfell and the Battle of the Bastards.
