Dr. Stewart (ドクター スチュワート, Dr. Stewart[?]), full name Robert Stewart (surname erroneously spelled Stuart in the F-Zero instruction manual)[1], is the pilot of the Golden Fox, and a recurring playable character in the F-Zero series.
Biography
Born in Mute City[1], Doctor Robert Stewart is a renowned surgeon with years of medical experience to his credit. He would take on a new career, however, directly following the sudden death of his father, Professor Kevin Stewart. The Professor was an accomplished scientist and F-Zero pilot who developed his own machine, the Golden Fox, which was passed down to Robert. To honor his father, Dr. Stewart took up the mantle and began racing in the Golden Fox. His two careers would converge when he acted as a paramedic on the scene of the infamous accident 3 years prior to the F-Zero X Grand Prix, where his surgical skills miraculously ensured that no lives were lost that day. As of F-Zero GX, he has been a pilot for over 10 years, and is a well-respected veteran of the circuit.
Dr. Stewart is a calm, charismatic, and good-hearted man. Highly respecting his late father, he strongly values honor and integrity, even telling Mr. Zero to keep his prize money in his F-Zero TV interview; a man of his word, he also claims to wear his signature red scarf as a sign of his friendship with an unknown individual.[2] He is resourceful and unafraid of calling on his medicinal knowledge, as seen by his efforts at the great accident. Dr. Stewart also displays considerable pride in himself – perhaps bordering on vanity – and speaks highly of his own driving skill, even stating in his interview that his driving skill is "perfect" and "consummate". Similarly, he is portrayed in the original F-Zero comic book as a ladies' man, and does not seem fond of sharing the circuit with bounty hunters.
Appearance
Dr. Stewart is a tall, thin, light-skinned human with considerable muscle mass. He has a thin face with narrow eyes and short, brown, wavy hair that, in GX, he wears in a unique backwards-swept style with a dramatic upwards curve resembling a pair of fox ears, a motif which is reinforced by his squinting eyes. Dr. Stewart is consistently depicted wearing a jumpsuit of a bold yellow color, accentuated with blue gloves and a red scarf. In the original F-Zero, his jumpsuit had large blue shoulder and elbow pads, and he wore light green shoes. From X onwards, these would all be removed – his elbows since have remained uncovered, while his suit has silver spaulders on his shoulders and he wears blue boots. In GX, his jumpsuit is depicted with blue stripes down his sides, with similar yellow stripes going down the centers of his boots. There also appears to be a light blue pattern printed on the chest of his suit in X, but this does not appear in any other game. In X and the F-Zero manual, he is depicted holding a racing helmet that has not since been seen.
Appearances
Dr. Stewart and the Golden Fox have appeared in every F-Zero game with the exception of F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, in which he is only briefly mentioned in the game's manual as a then-legendary pilot and the mentor of Blitz Wagner.
Dr. Stewart makes his debut alongside the Golden Fox in the original F-Zero; however, as with fellow pilots Captain Falcon, Pico, and Samurai Goroh, his only physical appearances lie in the game's manual. The enclosed comic introduces him in its last few pages, where he is described by Mr. Zero as "the skillful driver of the Golden Fox". Dr. Stewart is seen to denigrate Captain Falcon's skill just before the Grand Prix race, and claims he shall win "to honor beautiful women everywhere".[1]
Despite his status as a series mainstay, he has made no meaningful appearances in non-anime-based games since his debut.
