SCENE 1 | Linda meets the trio as they arrive at the library. She asks if Gina is going to stay for the story but she has to return to work, despite Elmo and Rosita's pleas to stay. A young man named Jesse enters, making sure everyone's there for the story he will be reading - including Gina, whom he seems to be particularly smitten with. She says she won't be at the reading, and Elmo tells Jesse she has to go to work. With Gina leaving, the others head off to read the story. | |

After Jesse finishes reading the story (told in narration interlaced with illustrations from the book), everyone loves the book so much that they want their own copy. Luckily enough, Jesse has brought plenty of copies and hands them out. | |

Linda suggests she take him on an outing, but Gina initially refuses since she doesn't have his telephone number; Linda just so happens to have Jesse's number, and hands Gina the library's telephone. Gina nervously calls him and asks if they'd like to get together. He invites her for a picnic in the afternoon, and the date is set! Until then, Elmo and Rosita request Gina read Play With Me to them. | |

Jesse doesn't want to disappoint them, saying there's no law for their picnic to be for grown-ups only. He and Gina agree to invite Rosita and Elmo to come along, not wanting their planning to go to waste. | |
