Lack of advertised "Appeal options"

[edit]

I came to this article trying to resolve a bogus TOR open-proxy block, whatever that may be. The section "Appeal options" states "If you suspect that you aren't editing from a blocked proxy, you can request that the IP be rechecked by posting it under "Alerts" at the MetaProject on open proxies." My frustration was redoubled by discovering that No "Alerts" word/button/etc. exists at the referenced link. Thanks for looking at this for the next mystified person. --CliffC 11:00, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Completely false

[edit]

"Because every computer is assigned a unique IP address, an effective method to stop a user who is abusing their editing privileges on Wikipedia is to block that address from editing."

No it isn't. 217.42.77.17 17:07, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Could you elaborate a little more? For example, why do you think blocking all users editing from an IP address is ineffective in stopping them from editing? Keep in mind that only a negligible minority are capable of regularly changing IP addresses, that IP ranges can be blocked, and that anonymizing proxies are routinely blocked. —{admin} Pathoschild 03:08:30, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Blocked because of a shared IP address

[edit]

Is there any way around this? i assume this is to do with my ISP? my intention was to write a page about my art practice. is there some type of resolution or arrangement we can come to?

Please be more specific. Which IP address or range was blocked on which wiki? —{admin} Pathoschild 14:37:43, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Do any of you realize that...

[edit]

Hi, I am from Hong Kong, but sometimes I access the net from mainland China. As you all know, the Chinese government is blocking wikipedia (thank god MetaWiki is not blocked ;)) so I access it through a proxy. When I tried to edit something on wikipedia (which involves some wrong interwikis), it said I'm blocked because I am using an open proxy! Can you guys recommend some ways to access wikipedia from mainland without an open proxy, while we wait for / petition the Chinese government to lift their blocks? -- Patrickov 02:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Legitimate, safe proxy, or not?

[edit]

Does anybody know if http://www.ukproxyserver.co.uk/ is an open proxy or not? If not, can it be used non abusively on English Wikipedia without risk of unexpected blocks? It's a service which offers an IP address in the UK for a monthly fee. They give you an IP address and a port number to enter into your browser settings. The subscriber will have the same IP address all the time and will be the only person who can access it, through username and password. 94.229.69.151 13:31, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

You appear to be editing through an anonomiser and so might well be subject to blocks. The best way is to become a registered user. That way you could be provided with "Block Exempt" status which would mean you could edit through any IP. Regards --Herby talk thyme 14:17, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

talk pages

[edit]

How about allowing Tor users to edit just talk pages? That way they can still provide information that other users can put into the articles, without being able to disrupt the articles. Or have there been problems with them messing with talk pages too much?

Quisiera que me ayudaran, porque aparezco bloqueada y no tengo idea ni de la causa ni de la solución. Gracias.

Registered editor blocked from editing using Puffin Browser

[edit]
Proxy block screenshot on Wikipedia

Do we need to consider giving slightly better help in warning templates to logged-in users who unexpectedly receive a template notice warning that they've been blocked from editing? I raise this because it took me an age to realise that, having logged in on from a new using Puffin Browser, I was blocked from editing until I changed to another browser. I was unaware it was acting as a proxy, but would have expected some clues on the template or once I'd followed the help links given. These were anything but helpful.

I've left a similar recommendation on the Help page to which the warning template directed me, with a small suggestion for an extra sentence (see here), but it seemed sensible to repeat my concerns here, too. Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 20:55, 22 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bug in IP detection,

[edit]

I appoligize if this does not belong here, I tried to give feedback directly to User, then the project and eventually this was the only place I could post a bug.

You have a bug in your system for detecting and handling IP addresses, I was on my VPN as I always am and went to edit a page where I was told I couldn't do it through that proxy, which is of course fine. I then temporarily turned off my vpn and refreshed, left and came back, and I was still blocked and it was clear by the message I was receiving that my current, non proxy IP, was not being evaluated, but rather you were still evaluating the old IP address incorrectly. This is the message that demonstrates this:

Account creation from IP addresses in the range 193.37.252.0/24, which includes your IP address (76.26.XXX.XXX), has been blocked by MusikAnimal.

The XXX.XXX is an edit for obvious reasons.

I attempted to upload a screenshot but I was unable to because I don't have an account and cannot create one at the moment.

I have not tried to reproduce this but the steps would be something like, Navigate to Wikipedia behind proxy. Attempt an action that would be prevented while using said proxy. Disable or Reroute your traffic so it is coming from a legitimate proxy. Observe that even though your IP has changed and is being read correctly, as is apparent in the error message above, the software in place to identify and prevent actions from certain proxies is using your old, now stale, proxy to make it's determination on accessibility. It should be using your current IP.

I added my name to article Cesta na sever Zapoljarnyj because I am author. I wrote it after I came back from Zapoljarnyj. You wiped off it and after it you blocked me. Why? 136.228.220.192 13:01, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Blocked because of open proxy

[edit]

Today, I saw an error message while editing on Wikipedia. My IP address is 163.171.220.104 and the blocked range is 163.171.192.0/19. Achmad Rachmani (talk) 12:23, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Achmad Rachmani you might want to read en:WP:IPBE or IP block exempt and request either a local or global IP block exemption if you are still affected by this range block. Johannnes89 (talk) 12:57, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

iCloud private relay

[edit]

Perhaps mention this in the help article- this is what I discovered. Apple users may need to turn this off to edit from their devices or use Wikipedia app. It seems to be considered a open proxy by the software. MaximumCruiser2 (talk) 23:05, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Inability of editing/creating/uploading a contents, due to blocked because of a IP address that contains 'open proxy' ?

[edit]

Randomly, the IP addresses can be determine for accessing Wikimedia sites. However some IP address that contains 'open proxy' such as 125.167.56.57 that blocked leading to 'inability of editing a pages, creating a pages and uploading new files'. So its likely to be able for editing/creating/uploading new contents in the next sessions if IP address randomly not contains 'open proxy'. Firzafp (talk) 01:36, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Range of wikipedia IP address (ip v6 included)

[edit]

I'm using a VPN included in IP address blocked. Some user can add range of IP address put outside the VPN tunnel. With ping : I found 185.15.59.0/24 and 2a02:ec80:300::/48, but it's not sufficient, there are other IP range.

It can help a lot if all IP address range of Wikipedia to put outside the VPN tunnel can be added to the help page (or a way to found all). Shnoulle (talk) 08:54, 16 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Employee Internet

[edit]

instructions assume personal internet setup, but don't give any options for people with employers who have set up their company internet with anonymizers like Zscalar. Looks like for cases where user has no control over internet setup, there are no options to edit. Not even editing with a logged in account will be allowed with open proxy setup. Chris Capoccia (talk) 13:40, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why does the block have to be so complete?

[edit]

Current open proxy block applies regardless of whether user is logged in or not and extends to Draft, User & User_Talk. I can't even edit my own sandbox from behind an open proxy while logged in! Does this really make sense? Seems to run counter to the slogan of "anyone can edit"? Appeal options seem to only apply to people in oppressive autocracies.
