Portals (also called Gateways) are magical entrances to other realms such as the Spirit World. They can be created in objects or exist as part of naturally occurring locations.
History
The Lake of Avalon contains the gateway to the world of Avalon (The Gates of Avalon, The Changeling).
The Manticore could be summoned from the Spirit World through a portal in a golden box. The portal kept the Manticore connected to its life source, an ancient evil that existed in the Spirit World, while it was in the living world. Destroying the portal severed this connection and destroyed the Manticore as well (Love in the Time of Dragons).
The Pool of Nemhain and the Great Stones of Nemeton were both gateways to the world of the dead (Lancelot du Lac, The Death Song of Uther Pendragon).
