A vegetable is a type of plant matter which is considered appropriate for use as food.

History and specifics[]

Some non-plants, like mushrooms and other fungi are sometimes considered to be vegetable matter. The definition generally excludes nuts, grains, seeds, herbs, spices and sweet fruits (although some fruits, like tomatoes, are called vegetables). Various parts of plants are eaten, including the roots and leaves.

While many vegetables are known to originate on Earth, there are many otherworldly variations of familiar Human foodstuffs.

The Armada was an agricultural colony which produced crops of vegetables that fed people throughout a sector. (TNG comic: "Space Seeds")
